Mark stood on the other side, silent. I stood barefoot in my living room with Matthew against my shoulder, watching the thin strip of darkness beneath the door as if it might tell me what he wanted.

Then he knocked again.

"Emily?"

His voice was gentle.

That frightened me.

Mark had always become gentlest when he needed control.

I carried Matthew into the bedroom and placed him in the bassinet. He opened his eyes briefly, frowned, then settled when I rested my hand against his stomach.

"Emily, I know you're awake."

I returned to the door but kept the chain fastened.

"What do you want?"

A pause.

"Can we talk?"

"We are talking."

He exhaled. I could picture the expression that accompanied the sound—the small crease between his eyebrows, the patient look he used when he wanted another person to feel unreasonable.

"This isn't something we should do through a door."

"Did you know?"

The hallway went quiet.

I had planned to ask carefully.

Instead, the question came out immediately.

"Know what?"

"That Matthew might have Down syndrome."

His shadow shifted beneath the door.

"Emily—"

"Before I knew."

He said nothing.

That was the first answer.

I pressed my palm flat against the wood. "Twelve weeks. Did you know when I was twelve weeks pregnant?"

"Who have you been talking to?"

The second answer.

A trembling sensation began in my knees, but my voice stayed level.

"Sarah."

Mark muttered something under his breath.

"Open the door."

"No."

"Emily, she doesn't understand what she found."

"Then explain it from there."

"Some of those documents are business records. Some involve people who have nothing to do with you. Sarah is upset and she's connecting things that aren't connected."

"Was I followed?"

Silence.

My mouth went dry.

"You had someone following me."

"It wasn't like that."

I actually laughed.

The sound startled both of us.

"What exactly is the acceptable version of secretly having a pregnant woman followed?"

"I was worried."

"You disappeared."

"I was still worried."

I pressed my forehead against the door for one second, astonished at his ability to make surveillance sound paternal.

"Did you arrange medical testing without telling me?"

This time he answered too quickly.

"No."

The lie was different from his others. I heard it immediately.

"Did you?"

"No."

"Then why is my name on medical documents Sarah found?"

"Because I made inquiries."

"Using my name?"

"I wanted information."

"About our baby?"

"Yes."

"Or about whether you wanted him?"

Mark stopped answering.

Behind me, Matthew began making restless noises.

I stepped away from the door.

Mark heard him.

"Is that him?"

Something in his voice changed.

Not warmth exactly.

But attention.

He had never heard Matthew cry in person.

He had never held him.

Mark had been absent at his birth, absent through the first terrifying cardiac scans, absent when a lactation consultant patiently showed me how to keep him awake long enough to feed.

The first six weeks of my son's life contained entire worlds his father knew nothing about.

"He has a name," I said.

"I know."

That caught me.

"How?"

"Emily."

"I never told you."

No answer.

I had blocked Mark before the birth after months of silence. There had been no announcement, no photograph sent through mutual friends. My social accounts were private.

Yet he knew my son was named Matthew.

My pulse sharpened.

"You kept watching me."

"I made sure you were okay."

"You made sure you knew what I was doing."

"There's a difference."

"Not from where I'm standing."

Matthew started crying properly now.

Every instinct in me turned toward the bedroom.

Mark knocked once more.

"Please. I need you to understand that Sarah is going to make this uglier than it has to be."

I stopped.

There it was.

Not concern about Matthew.

Not an apology.

Sarah.

"What happens tomorrow?" I asked.

"What?"

"Why are you so desperate to talk tonight?"

He hesitated.

I knew Mark's silences by then.

Some meant he was angry.

Some meant he was inventing.

This one meant calculation.

"Nothing happens tomorrow."

"So I can meet Sarah?"

"No."

The speed of his answer made my skin tighten.

"Why not?"

"Because my family is already in enough chaos."

"Your family?"

"I didn't mean it that way."

"You did."

Matthew's crying became louder.

I walked toward the bedroom.

Behind me, Mark said, "Emily, if Sarah gives you anything, don't sign it. Don't take it to a lawyer. Let me see it first."

I turned.

Through the door I said, "Why would I need a lawyer?"

He realized his mistake.

The corridor fell silent.

"Good night, Mark."

"Emily."

I went to my son.

Mark remained outside for another three minutes.

I know because I watched the clock while feeding Matthew. At 1:03, I heard his shoes move down the corridor. At 1:04, the elevator chimed.

At 1:06, Sarah called again.

"Is he there?"

"He just left."

She swore softly.

"How did you know?"

"Because he saw my phone."

"What?"

"He knows I called you."

Her voice sounded different now—breathless and stripped of the composure she'd had earlier.

"Are you safe?" I asked.

A strange question to ask your lover's wife.

An even stranger one to mean sincerely.

"I'm at my sister's."

"What happened?"

"I asked him about the folder. He told me it was nothing. Then I showed him copies."

"Copies of what?"

"Bank transfers. An investigator's invoices. Clinic paperwork. Messages between him and his mother."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What messages?"

"I don't want to read them to you over the phone."

"Sarah."

"I'll show you tomorrow."

"I need to know."

Her breath shuddered.

"His mother knew you were pregnant."

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

There was always another room in Mark's life where decisions were being made without me.

"What did she say?"

"Emily, please."

"What did she say about my son?"

Sarah was quiet long enough that I heard Matthew swallowing.

Finally she said, "She wanted Mark to make the problem disappear."

My arms tightened around him.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know exactly."

But she did.

We both did.

Neither of us was ready to say it.

Sarah gave me her sister's address and asked me to meet there at ten in the morning. She said her cousin Daniel would be present. He was an attorney who handled family and civil cases.

"I can't afford an attorney."

"You're not paying him tomorrow."

"I don't want charity."

"This isn't charity."

Her tone hardened for the first time.

"My husband lied to both of us. He used my marriage as a cover while he was with you, and apparently used me again when he wanted to make you disappear. I have a right to know what he did in my name."

I almost defended myself.

Some reflex made me want to tell her I hadn't known the whole truth about their marriage.

Then I stopped.

Explanations could wait.

Sarah had earned the right not to comfort me.

"I'll come," I said.

After we ended the call, I slept for perhaps forty minutes.

Morning arrived gray and wet.

I packed Matthew's diaper bag three times because I kept forgetting what I had already put inside. Bottles. Formula. Two sleepers. Wipes. His medical notebook. Pacifier. Cardigan.

At the bottom of the bag, beneath a folded blanket, I placed the photograph Mark had given me during my pregnancy.

It showed him at nineteen, grinning beside an older man in front of a lake.

Mark had once said the older man was his father, Gregory.

He had spoken about Gregory rarely and carefully. Successful. Demanding. Old-fashioned about family. The type of man, Mark said, who believed private failures became public weaknesses.

At the time, I thought he was explaining why he feared divorce.

Now I wondered what else he had been explaining without telling me.

Sarah's sister lived twenty minutes away.

When I arrived, Sarah opened the door before I knocked.

For a moment we simply looked at each other.

She was taller than I expected. No makeup. Hair tied carelessly behind her head. There were dark crescents under her eyes.

Her gaze dropped to Matthew.

Everything in her face changed.

Not disgust.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Oh," she whispered.

I almost cried because of that single syllable.

She stepped backward.

"Come in."

A man in shirtsleeves was sitting at the dining table surrounded by photocopies.

"This is Daniel," Sarah said.

He rose and shook my hand without staring at Matthew.

That kindness nearly undid me.

Sarah brought water. Daniel asked permission before beginning.

Then he placed a photograph on the table.

I recognized myself immediately.

I was leaving my obstetrician's office at fourteen weeks pregnant.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

Another showed me carrying groceries.

Another showed Mark entering my apartment.

Another showed me sitting alone in a café, one hand resting on the small curve of my stomach.

The final photograph was much more recent.

I was standing outside the hospital.

Matthew was in his carrier.

It had been taken the day I brought him home.

My heart began pounding.

"Who took these?"

Daniel pushed an invoice toward me.

The name meant nothing.

Private monitoring services.

Dates.

Payments.

Mark's initials.

Sarah opened another folder.

"There is more."

She slid a laboratory report across the table.

My full legal name appeared at the top.

Below it was my date of birth.

Gestational age.

A prenatal screening result showing elevated risk for trisomy 21.

The collection date was eight weeks before my own doctor had discussed the diagnosis with me.

For a few seconds I could not understand what I was seeing.

Then I reached the signature line.

Patient consent received.

A signature resembling mine curved across the bottom.

I stared at it.

Sarah whispered, "Emily?"

I looked at her.

"That's not my signature."

Daniel sat forward.

"You're certain?"

"I never went to this clinic."

My eyes returned to the collection date.

I knew that date.

I knew exactly where I had been.

Orange juice.

Dizziness.

A bright hallway I had never been able to explain.

Mark's hand around my waist.

The memory snapped into focus with terrifying clarity.

I whispered, "He took me there."

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Medical Record Bearing My Name Revealed What Mark Had Hidden for Months, and Sarah Found Something Even More Damaging

I did not open the door.
