Nothing about her posture appeared threatening. We're preserving the communication. If there is something that affects Emily or her child, now would be a sensible time to say it."

Rachel laughed once without humor.

"Of course there's a lawyer."

"There's a mother whose medical information appears to have been obtained without her knowledge."

That ended Rachel's sarcasm.

When she spoke again, her voice was lower.

"I was at the hospital."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because my father told me to go."

Gregory.

The name seemed to enter every room before the man himself did.

"What did he want?"

"He wanted confirmation."

"Of what?"

"That the baby had been born."

I looked at Matthew.

He was awake in my arms, quietly studying the ceiling fan.

"Why?"

Rachel did not answer.

Sarah's voice hardened.

"Rachel."

"He didn't trust Mark."

"About what?"

"Anything."

"That's not an answer."

"No, it isn't."

Something scraped on Rachel's end of the call. A chair, perhaps.

Finally she said, "You need to understand how our father thinks. He doesn't see families the way normal people do. He sees liabilities. He sees leverage. He sees what can embarrass him."

"And Matthew embarrasses him?" I asked.

"No."

The answer came unexpectedly fast.

"Then what?"

Rachel's next words were quieter.

"What Matthew reminds him of."

Daniel and Sarah exchanged a look.

I felt suddenly excluded again.

"You know what she means."

Sarah shook her head.

"I don't."

But Rachel said, "Mark does."

We heard her breathing.

Then she asked something strange.

"Has Mark ever told you about the accident?"

Sarah frowned.

"What accident?"

"The one when he was seventeen."

"No."

Of course he hadn't.

Men like Mark apparently carried entire buried histories and called secrecy privacy.

Rachel continued.

"There was a crash after a party. Mark was driving."

Sarah sat down.

"He told me he didn't get his license until college."

"That was another lie."

Rachel's voice had developed a brittle edge.

"There were four teenagers in the car. Mark lost control. Another boy was badly injured."

"What does that have to do with Matthew?" I asked.

"The injured boy had an intellectual disability."

The room became still.

Rachel continued before anyone interrupted.

"He hadn't been drinking. Mark had."

Sarah whispered, "Oh God."

"But by the time the police finished hearing everyone's version, the story had changed."

Daniel's face darkened.

"How?"

"My father's lawyers argued that the other boy had distracted Mark. Then they suggested he might have grabbed the steering wheel."

"Was that true?"

"No."

The word struck hard.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was there."

Sarah stared at the phone.

Rachel's breathing became uneven.

"I was fourteen. I was in the back seat."

The past suddenly felt present.

A frightened teenage girl.

A drunk seventeen-year-old brother.

A powerful father.

One injured boy who became convenient to blame.

"What happened to him?" I asked.

"He survived."

"Then why does this matter now?"

"Because my father paid for everything to disappear. Statements changed. Records became difficult to find. The boy's family accepted a settlement because they couldn't afford the fight."

Rachel paused.

"And Mark learned something terrible."

"What?"

"That if a vulnerable person stands between you and consequences, people will often believe your version first."

Sarah covered her mouth.

My stomach turned.

"And when Matthew's screening suggested Down syndrome?"

Rachel made a sound that was almost a sob.

"Mark panicked."

Not because he feared raising a child with Down syndrome.

Because the child awakened an old crime.

An old lie.

An old boy his family had sacrificed.

I wanted to reject the connection as too cruel to be real.

Then I remembered the surveillance.

The false signature.

The private testing.

Gregory's approval.

The payments.

"Is the injured boy alive?" Daniel asked.

Rachel hesitated.

"Yes."

"Name?"

"I'm not giving it over the phone."

"Then come here."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because my father knows I took documents from the company archive."

Sarah rose again.

"What documents?"

"Records of the settlement. Internal correspondence. The investigator's reports on Emily."

My heart thudded.

"You have them?"

"Some."

"Bring them."

"I said no."

I stepped closer to the phone.

"Rachel, your family watched me while I was pregnant. Someone obtained medical information using my identity. Someone watched me bring my son home. Whatever you're afraid of, I'm already inside it."

Rachel became silent.

I continued.

"You got to know what was happening. Sarah got to know pieces of it. Mark knew. Your father knew. I was the only person whose body was actually carrying Matthew, and everyone else apparently had more information than I did."

My voice shook now.

"I am finished being the last person told."

There was a long silence.

Then Rachel said, "I'll come."

She gave no time.

She simply ended the call.

Daniel immediately began arranging copies of everything Sarah possessed.

He wanted one set stored elsewhere.

Another photographed.

Another sent securely.

His caution was beginning to make sense.

Sarah kept looking toward the window.

"I've known Rachel fifteen years," she said. "She's difficult, but I've never heard her sound afraid of Gregory."

"Has Mark?"

Sarah considered the question.

"Mark performs for him."

"Meaning?"

"He becomes seventeen again when Gregory enters the room."

That detail sat heavily with me.

For all the anger I felt toward Mark, the picture was growing more complicated without becoming more forgiving.

A frightened son can become a cruel father.

One truth does not erase the other.

Matthew began fussing.

I carried him into the living room and changed him on Sarah's couch.

Sarah knelt beside us with a clean sleeper.

For the first time, she touched his hand.

Matthew immediately curled his fingers around hers.

Sarah froze.

His grip was barely strong enough to wrinkle her skin.

Still, she looked as though he had reached somewhere much deeper.

"Hi," she whispered.

Matthew blinked.

Then his mouth opened in one of his uncertain early smiles.

Sarah's eyes filled.

I looked away to give her privacy.

She laughed softly through her tears.

"I thought meeting him would destroy me."

"So did I."

She looked at me.

"Instead I'm angry at everyone except him."

"That makes two of us."

A car door slammed outside.

Daniel moved to the window.

"Someone's here."

Sarah stiffened.

Rachel entered less than a minute later.

She looked nothing like the distant woman in the photograph.

She was in her late thirties, dressed in dark trousers and a raincoat, her hair damp at the shoulders. She carried a leather messenger bag against her body as if afraid someone might take it.

Her eyes went directly to Matthew.

She stopped.

Everything she had intended to say disappeared from her face.

"This is him?"

I stood.

"This is Matthew."

Rachel did not approach.

For several seconds she simply looked.

Then she whispered, "He looks happy."

It was such an ordinary observation that my anger faltered.

"He is."

Rachel closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, she looked at Sarah.

"Mark told Dad he didn't know if the baby was his."

Sarah gave a humorless laugh.

"Convenient."

"Nobody believed him."

"Because?"

Rachel set the leather bag on the table.

"Because Mark ordered the testing."

My body became cold.

Sarah's expression hardened.

"So he knew."

"Yes."

"How?"

Rachel looked at me.

"I don't know exactly how the sample was taken. Mark handled that through a doctor Gregory used for private matters."

The restaurant returned to me again.

The orange drink.

The lost hours.

My fingers went numb.

Rachel saw my face.

"What?"

"Nothing."

But Daniel intervened.

"Not nothing. We have reason to believe Emily may have been taken to the clinic without informed consent."

Rachel stared at her brother's name on the laboratory paperwork.

For the first time, she looked genuinely sick.

"I didn't know that."

"There's more you don't know," Sarah said.

Rachel lowered herself into a chair.

"Probably."

She opened the messenger bag.

Inside were folders, an old flash drive, and a sealed envelope.

"This is what I could take without triggering the archive log."

Daniel reached toward the folders.

Rachel stopped him.

"Before you open those, understand something."

He waited.

"My father didn't order surveillance because he was worried about Emily exposing the affair."

"Then why?" I asked.

"He was afraid someone else would discover Matthew."

"Who?"

"The Bennett family."

The name meant nothing to me.

Daniel, however, reacted.

"The family from the accident?"

Rachel nodded.

"They never believed the official story."

Sarah looked between them.

"So Gregory thought Mark having a child with Down syndrome somehow connected back to the crash?"

"Not by itself."

Rachel removed the sealed envelope.

"This did."

She slid it toward me.

My name was written across the front.

Not Emily.

My full legal name.

I looked at Rachel.

"What is it?"

"Something Gregory received while you were pregnant."

"From whom?"

"The boy Mark blamed."

Daniel stared at her.

"You said he survived."

"He did."

Rachel pushed the envelope closer.

"His name is Daniel Bennett."

The lawyer beside me went completely still.

Sarah noticed first.

"Daniel?"

He was staring at the envelope.

Rachel looked from him to me and seemed to understand something none of us did.

"What?" I demanded.

Daniel's face had lost its color.

"My mother's maiden name was Bennett."

No one spoke.

Rachel whispered, "Who was her brother?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Thomas."

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Thomas Bennett was the boy in the crash."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

Daniel had come to help Sarah examine her husband's secrets.

Instead, he had just discovered that the same family might have destroyed his uncle's life decades earlier.

Before anyone could speak, tires screeched outside.

A black sedan stopped at the curb.

Rachel went to the window and swore.

"He's here."

"Mark?" Sarah asked.

Rachel shook her head.

Her fear answered before her mouth did.

"My father."

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Gregory Arrived Expecting Silence, but the Envelope on Sarah’s Table Forced Him to Face the Family He Had Buried

Sarah stared at the photograph until I finally lowered the phone. "Her name is Rachel," she said.
