moving.

Elaine slid one final laboratory report across the table.

Mark Vale.

Thomas Bennett.

Probability of biological paternity: greater than 99.9 percent.

Mark stared at the page.

His hands shook.

Gregory had secretly tested his own adult son.

Not because he doubted being Mark’s father.

Because he feared confirmation.

Daniel whispered, “When was this done?”

Elaine pointed to the date.

The same week my blood was taken.

Mark looked at her.

“How did they get Thomas’s DNA?”

Nobody answered.

Thomas finally spoke through the phone.

“They already had it.”

Daniel frowned.

“From where?”

Thomas’s voice became grim.

“The accident.”

Mark stared.

“The crash?”

“Yes.”

Thomas had given blood at the hospital twenty-four years earlier.

Gregory’s lawyers had obtained copies of medical materials during the civil negotiations.

Somehow, a biological sample had been preserved.

Elaine looked sick.

“Gregory kept everything.”

Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”

Mark read the report again.

Then he folded it once.

Carefully.

Too carefully.

“I spent my whole life trying to become a man who deserved his approval.”

No one interrupted.

“And I was never even his son.”

Elaine stepped toward him.

“Mark.”

He looked up.

“Did he know before this test?”

“I think he always suspected.”

“Did Thomas know?”

Thomas answered.

“Not until three years ago.”

Mark stared at the phone.

“How?”

“Your mother told me.”

Elaine closed her eyes.

Mark laughed softly.

“So every person in this room knew pieces of my life except me.”

I looked at him.

For the first time, our injuries resembled each other.

Not equally.

Not identically.

But enough.

Someone else deciding what truth you could handle.

Someone else deciding what happened to your body, your family, your identity.

Mark looked at me.

I could see him understanding it too.

“That’s what I did to you.”

I said nothing.

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

“No,” I said. “You’re beginning to.”

His eyes dropped.

Elaine reached into the envelope one last time.

“There is something else.”

Rachel gave a tired laugh.

“Of course there is.”

Elaine placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Gregory standing outside my apartment building.

The date stamp was from three days before Matthew was born.

I stared at it.

“He came here?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I followed him.”

The irony almost made Sarah laugh.

Elaine continued.

“He met someone.”

“Who?”

She turned over the photograph.

A second image showed Gregory speaking beside a car.

The other person was a physician.

I recognized him.

Dr. Halpern.

The pediatric specialist who had appeared at the hospital less than an hour after Matthew was born.

My stomach dropped.

“What did Gregory want from him?”

Elaine looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

The room seemed to contract around my son.

Then my phone rang.

Hospital number.

I answered immediately.

A woman identified herself from medical records.

She said a request had been submitted that morning for Matthew’s complete neonatal file.

Not by me.

Not by his pediatrician.

The authorization carried my signature.

Another signature that looked like mine.

I stared at Elaine.

“Who requested it?”

The woman checked.

When she gave me the name, Elaine closed her eyes.

Gregory Vale.

<a
