Trisomy 21 was confirmed.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“I mean the extended panel.”

I felt cold.

“There was no extended still.

Thomas spoke from Daniel’s phone, which remained connected.

“It runs in mine.”

Every head turned.

Daniel stared at the speaker.

“What?”

Thomas repeated it.

“My father had it.”

Mark looked at Elaine.

“My biological grandfather.”

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The pieces moved.

Gregory had discovered Mark was Thomas’s son.

Matthew was Mark’s son.

Therefore Matthew might carry a Bennett family cardiac risk.

Gregory had arranged a specialist before Matthew was born.

For one strange moment, that sounded almost caring.

Then I remembered the forged record request.

“Why hide that from me?”

Nobody knew.

Halpern spoke carefully.

“Gregory told me Emily was unaware of the paternity protection.

“Did Matthew show signs of the condition?”

“No.”

“Then why does Gregory want his neonatal file?”

“I genuinely don’t know.”

Daniel asked whether Halpern would provide a written account.

The doctor hesitated.

Then agreed.

Perhaps he had finally realized that Gregory’s protection was becoming less valuable than documentation.

After the call, Thomas said he had reached the service station.

Police and an ambulance were arriving.

Daniel promised to meet him at the hospital.

Before ending the call, Thomas asked to speak to Mark.

Mark hesitated.

Then picked up the phone.

“What?”

Thomas’s voice was weak.

“I should have told you.”

Mark stared at the floor.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I hated Gregory more than I loved the truth.”

The answer silenced everyone.

Thomas continued.

“I thought if I told you, you would either protect him or become him.”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“So you made the decision for me.”

“Yes.”

A bitter smile crossed Mark’s face.

“Seems contagious.”

Thomas accepted it.

“Yes.”

Mark’s eyes filled.

“Did you ever want to know me?”

Elaine looked away.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Thomas took a long breath.

“Yes.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw the boy whose lie destroyed my life.”

The cruelty of the truth struck harder than a comforting lie would have.

Mark said nothing.

Thomas continued.

“And every time I looked again, I saw Elaine.”

Mark swallowed.

“That doesn’t answer me.”

“No.”

Thomas’s voice broke.

“I was a coward too.”

Mark ended the call.

He placed the phone on the table.

For several seconds, he stood motionless.

Then he went outside.

No one followed.

Sarah watched through the window.

“He’ll come back.”

Elaine looked at her.

“You sound certain.”

“I was married to him for fifteen years.”

The past tense no longer sounded accidental.

Daniel packed the copied evidence.

“I’m going to the hospital to meet Thomas.”

Rachel stood.

“I’m coming.”

“So am I,” Elaine said.

Rachel turned.

“No.”

Elaine flinched.

“I need to speak with him.”

“You had forty years.”

“I know.”

“That isn’t an appointment you get to make today.”

Elaine looked down.

Rachel picked up her coat.

“Daniel and I will go.”

Sarah asked, “What about the storage unit?”

Rachel stopped.

Elaine answered.

“There’s nothing there now.”

Everyone turned.

“What did you do?” Rachel asked.

“I moved the original adoption documents this morning.”

“Where?”

Elaine looked at the brown envelope.

Rachel stared.

“You brought them here?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Gregory was going to destroy them.”

Elaine opened a second compartment.

Inside was a thick packet bearing old legal stamps.

Rachel approached slowly.

Her birth name appeared on the first page.

Rebecca Margaret Bennett.

Mother: Margaret Bennett.

Father: Gregory Vale.

The next document was temporary guardianship.

Then a permanent adoption consent.

Margaret’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Rachel stared at it.

“That’s the forgery.”

Elaine nodded.

“I believe so.”

Daniel photographed every page.

Then he stopped at a handwritten note clipped to the back.

The note was from the attorney who had handled the adoption.

One sentence had been underlined.

Mr. Vale requests all Bennett family medical information be transferred with the child’s file, including Samuel B.’s developmental and neurological history.

I frowned.

“Why would Gregory want Samuel’s medical records in Rachel’s adoption file?”

Nobody knew.

Elaine took the page.

Her face changed.

“I've never seen this.”

Daniel read further.

Another note.

Family requests discretion regarding hereditary concerns.

Thomas had said Samuel had Down syndrome.

Down syndrome was usually not inherited in the ordinary way people imagined, though some forms could involve translocation.

Gregory, however, had apparently been obsessed with heredity long before Matthew.

“Was Gregory afraid Rachel would have a disability?” I asked.

Elaine looked sick.

“Yes.”

Rachel stared.

“He tested me?”

“Repeatedly.”

“When?”

“When you were a baby.”

Rachel stepped backward.

Elaine’s voice shook.

“He away.

I looked at Matthew.

Suddenly Gregory’s obsession with my pregnancy seemed older and darker.

It was not simply about Samuel’s death.

It was not simply about Thomas.

It was a belief that disability exposed weakness in a family, that bloodlines could be evaluated like business assets.

Mark came back inside.

His eyes were red, but his voice was steady.

“Dad kept genealogical records.”

Elaine looked at him.

“What?”

“In his office
