did.”

“Yes.”

Rachel whispered, “Oh my God.”

Mark looked physically sick.

“He sent me to that reception.”

Sarah stared at him.

“You said he sent you because Blackwell needed representation.”

“That’s what he told me.”

Daniel asked, “Did he know Emily would attend?”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Probably.”

The possibility became uglier.

Perhaps Gregory had not merely allowed Mark and me to meet.

Perhaps he arranged it.

“Why?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I held Matthew tighter.

“Why would he put us together if he knew we were cousins?”

Rachel shook her head.

“He wouldn't.”

“But he did.”

“Maybe he didn’t know Mark was Thomas’s son Emily and I had already started seeing each other.”

“Before that?”

“He only said she might have information valuable to the family.”

Sarah's face hardened.

“So you approached her intentionally.”

Mark shook his head.

“No.”

“You went to the reception intentionally.”

“Yes.”

“Did you speak to Emily because your father told you to?”

“No.”

“How can she trust that?”

Mark looked at me.

“She can’t.”

At least he had stopped asking for trust he had not earned.

I remembered the reception.

Mark standing beside me.

The easy conversation.

His surprised expression when I told him my name.

Was that surprise genuine?

Probably.

I hated that probably had become the strongest word available.

Daniel called Thomas.

This conversation could not wait.

Thomas answered groggily.

When Daniel explained who my mother was, Thomas began crying.

Not loudly.

One broken breath.

Then another.

“Laura’s daughter.”

I felt my throat close.

“You knew my death, Laura cut herself off from most of the family.

She married young.

Changed her surname.

Moved away.

She wanted nothing to do with Gregory or the Vales.

“Why didn’t she tell me any of this?”

“Because she promised Margaret.”

“What promise?”

Thomas went quiet.

“Laura believed the only way to protect the next generation was to let the old one end.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, the old generation had reached into everything.

Thomas explained that Margaret and Laura both knew Gregory monitored family contacts.

Laura stopped using Bennett professionally.

Margaret maintained occasional secret contact.

After Rachel’s adoption, those communications became even more guarded.

“When did Mom contact you about Samuel’s records?”

“About thirteen years ago.”

“Did you know she had a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know my name?”

“Yes.”

“Did Gregory?”

Thomas paused.

“Yes.”

The room went still.

“How?”

“He asked me once.”

“When?”

“After Laura contacted me.”

“What did you tell him?”

“Nothing.”

“So he found out another way.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Mark.

“When did Gregory first tell you about me?”

He rubbed his face.

“A month before the charity you?”

“A photograph.”

The bank room seemed to return around me.

Mark continued.

“It was an old photograph. A woman coming out of a hospital.”

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“He asked you to identify her?”

“No.”

“He said her daughter worked for one of the companies attending the charity event.”

Sarah stared.

“And you didn’t find that strange?”

“I did.”

“What did Gregory say?”

“That Laura had taken proprietary medical records and he needed to know whether she’d passed them to her daughter.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“So your assignment was Emily.”

Mark looked at me.

“Yes.”

The answer broke whatever fragile distinction remained between our meeting and Gregory’s plan.

“You approached me because of him.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I saw your badge. Your surname matched the list Dad gave me.”

My mouth went dry.

“You knew who I was before you said hello.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

The drinks table.

The charming conversation.

You look familiar.

It had been an opening line built on surveillance.

“I’m going to be showed my mother’s daughter.

Thomas’s niece.

Mark’s cousin.

Matthew’s mother.

When I returned, nobody spoke.

Mark looked anymore.”

“I know.”

“Did you search my apartment because Gregory told you to?”

“Yes.”

“Did you start sleeping with me before or after?”

His silence answered.

“After.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

There it was.

The relationship had begun under false pretenses before the first kiss.

Whatever became genuine later did not purify the beginning.

“Did Sarah know anything about this?”

“No.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“Apparently being your wife qualified me for less information than your private investigator.”

Mark looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

She shook her head.

“Save it.”

Daniel asked Thomas whether Gregory had ever indicated he suspected Mark and I were related.

Thomas said yes.

“When?”

“After Emily became pregnant.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?”

“He called me.”

Thomas’s voice weakened.

“He said blood had a way of circling back.”

A chill moved through the room.

“He knew.”

“By then, yes.”

“Did he tell Mark?”

“No.”

“Me?”

“No.”

“What did he do?”

“He ordered the genetic testing.”

Of course.

That was why the secret prenatal testing had been so broad.

Gregory was not merely checking for Down syndrome.

He was investigating how much of the hidden family structure Matthew might expose.

Daniel asked, “Did Gregory know before Mark and Emily began the relationship that Mark was your son?”

Thomas answered carefully.

“I don't know.”

Elaine would.

We called her.

She answered from the hotel.

When Daniel asked, Elaine became quiet.

“Gregory suspected from the day Mark was born.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“He looked like Thomas.”

No one spoke.

“Did Gregory arrange for Mark to meet Emily knowing she was Laura’s daughter?”

“Yes.”

My knees weakened.

Mark stared at the phone.

“Why would he do that?”

Elaine answered.

“He wanted Laura’s records.”

“That part we know.”

“He thought if Mark became close to Emily, he could find them.”

Rachel whispered, “He used his own son as an investigator.”

Elaine corrected softly.

“The son he feared wasn't his.”

Mark looked away.

I asked the harder question.

“Did Gregory know there was a chance Mark and I were me.”

“Yes.”

“Did he expect us to become involved?”

“No.”

Elaine sounded certain.

“He expected Mark to be charming, gain your trust, learn whether Laura had left documents and step away.”

I stared at Mark.

He had failed Gregory by falling for me.

What a grotesque version of romance.

“When did Gregory realize we were sleeping together?”

Elaine hesitated.

“Very quickly.”

“Did he tell Mark the truth then?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because by that point, he thought separating you abruptly might make Emily suspicious.”

I laughed.

I could not help it.

The sound was empty.

“So he let it continue.”

“Yes.”

“Even though we might be related.”

“Yes.”

Mark struck the table with his palm.

Everyone jumped.

He immediately stepped back.

“Sorry.”

But anger had finally broken through his shame.

“He knew.”

Elaine said nothing.

“He watched me build a relationship with my cousin because exposing his secrets mattered more.”

“Yes.”

Mark walked toward the door.

Sarah said, “Where are you going?”

“To see him.”

“No.”

He turned.

“He did this.”

“So did you.”

The sentence stopped him.

Sarah held Matthew against her chest.

“You don’t get to reduce
