broker.”

“Why?”

“She had a document case.”

“Did you ask Cal?”

“He said she handled financing.”

“What happened after?”

“She left.”

“Did Marcus arrive before or after her?”

“After.”

“And then?”

“Marcus took the documents.”

“What documents?”

“I don't know.”

“Did he take the bottle?”

Martin shook his head.

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Cal.”

A long silence settled across the kitchen.

Then Stephanie said, “Where is the apartment now?”

“I don't know,” Martin said.

“I do,” I answered.

The lease had an address.

I picked up my coat.

Martin stood.

“Where are you going?”

“Charlotte.”

“No.”

“I wasn't asking.”

“You can't just drive there.”

“Why?”

“Because Cal may already be headed there.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“He took the cash.”

“That could mean anything.”

“No.”

Martin pulled out his phone.

“He called me twenty minutes ago.”

My anger sharpened.

“You've been sitting here knowing where he is?”

“I don't know where he is.”

“What did he say?”

Martin unlocked the screen.

“He asked if I still had the apartment key.”

Stephanie stood.

“Do you?”

Martin reached into his coat pocket.

He placed a brass key on the table.

“Yes.”

I stared at it.

“Why do you still have it?”

“Because Cal gave it to me after December fourteenth.”

“Why?”

“He said if anything happened to him, I was supposed to empty the apartment before anyone else got there.”

My skin prickled.

“Anyone else meaning Marcus?”

“I assumed.”

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

The message was shorter than the others.

Do not let Martin give Cal the key.

I looked slowly toward my father-in-law.

A second message arrived.

The blonde woman was not a broker.

I showed Stephanie.

Then Martin.

His face changed.

Another message.

She was your witness.

My throat tightened.

Witness to what?

Before I could type the question, one final message appeared.

Ask what she saw Cal sign in your name.

I looked at the red folder.

Then at the insurance policy.

Then at the three fraudulent loans.

For the first time, I understood that somewhere in Charlotte there might be a person who had watched my husband forge me into his secret life.

And whatever she had witnessed was important enough that someone had spent two years making sure I never knew she existed.

I took the brass key from the table.

“I'm going to that apartment.”

Martin reached for it.

I closed my fist.

“No.”

“Josie.”

“You kept enough secrets for him.”

He stopped.

Stephanie put on her coat.

“I’m coming.”

Martin looked between us.

“You have no idea who may be there.”

“That makes three of us.”

I slipped the key into my pocket.

Then I looked at the insurance policy one last time before closing the folder.

Eight days before I got sick, Cal had insured my life.

On the day I became ill, he had been inside a hidden apartment in another state, arguing with a woman about my signature.

And now, after the money disappeared, after the loans surfaced, after someone broke into Eric's office, my husband was apparently trying to get back into that same apartment before I did.

Whatever remained there was not history.

It was evidence.

And Cal was already moving to reach it first.
