Marcus want Cal away from me so badly?”

Martin did not answer.

“Because I'm his sister?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Another long silence.

Finally:

“Because you knew where the missing ninety thousand really went.”

Rebecca stared at the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

“Cal didn't steal all of it.”

Cal looked at her.

“What?”

Martin continued.

“The Northline money everyone thinks Cal diverted—the ninety thousand—only forty-two went through his accounts.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I saw the records.”

“You saw altered records.”

Her face changed.

“Where did the rest go?”

Martin spoke quietly.

“To JKM Consulting.”

I stared at the laptop.

Cal whispered, “Mom.”

Martin didn't correct him.

Rebecca opened transaction history.

Her fingers moved quickly.

Forty-eight thousand.

A cluster of transfers.

All within six weeks around December two years earlier.

Total:

$48,200.

Straight into JKM.

Combined with Cal's forty-two thousand, it produced nearly the exact ninety-thousand-dollar theft Marcus blamed on him.

Cal sat down outside the motel door.

“My parents let Marcus think I stole ninety.”

Martin said, “We didn't create that assumption.”

“You let it stand.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Marcus focused on you instead of asking where the rest went.”

“Where did it go after JKM?”

Martin's answer came so quietly I almost missed it.

“To pay off your mother's debt.”

Cal stared at the floor.

“What debt?”

Martin said nothing.

Cal looked up.

“What debt did Mom have?”

I thought of Diane.

Bookkeeping.

The roof.

The house transferred to Northline.

Her desperate insistence that she personally gained nothing.

“What did she owe?”

Martin finally answered.

“Gambling.”

The word hung in the motel room.

Cal looked almost offended by its impossibility.

“My mother doesn't gamble.”

Martin's laugh was exhausted.

“She does online.”

“How much?”

“At the worst point? Over two hundred thousand.”

Nobody moved.

The fake company.

The house.

The siphoned Northline money.

The urgency.

The forged structures.

The hidden payments.

Not all of it had been built to protect Cal.

Some of it had been built to rescue Diane.

And Cal, drowning in his own lies, had been the perfect cover.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

You know enough now.

Then another.

But Martin is still protecting Diane.

And finally:

Ask him who put the sedative bottle in your kitchen.

I looked at the phone.

Then listened to Martin breathe on the other end of the line.

“Who moved the bottle?”

He went silent.

Rebecca watched my face.

“Martin?”

His voice broke slightly.

“Diane.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Diane Finally Admitted Moving the Sedatives, but Her Explanation Exposed the Night She Used My Identity to Save Herself

For several seconds, nobody said anything.
