father failed to keep.

My phone vibrated.

This time the number was Diane's real one.

One last recording.

Price found the matching file.

Date:

Christmas Eve.

The day Cal sent Stephanie $2,500.

The day before dinner.

Martin and Cal.

Martin:

“Transfer the ten tomorrow.”

Cal:

“I don't have ten.”

“You will.”

“Josie's bonus isn't mine.”

A pause.

Then Martin:

“You crossed that line years ago.”

Cal:

“I'm not taking all of it.”

“You need Marcus quiet.”

“I'll figure something else out.”

“You've had two years.”

Cal said something too low to hear.

Martin:

“The roof gives you cover.”

Cal:

“She'll know.”

“Not immediately.”

“And when she does?”

Martin answered:

“By then it won't matter.”

The recording stopped.

I felt the hairs rise along my arms.

“What did he mean?”

Diane answered.

“I asked him.”

“And?”

“He said by then Northline would be resolved.”

“Was that true?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at Price.

She was already marking the file.

My phone rang.

Cal.

I almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“Mom gave them the recordings.”

“Yes.”

“There's one you need to hear.”

“Which?”

“She probably didn't label it clearly.”

“What is it?”

“The night before Christmas.”

“I just heard it.”

“No.”

Cal's voice tightened.

“Not me and Dad.”

“Who?”

“Dad and Marcus.”

I looked at Diane's file list.

There was one recording labeled only:

M / M.

Price opened it.

Before she pressed play, Cal said quietly through my phone:

“Josie, whatever you hear, I need you to know I didn't agree to it.”

I almost laughed.

“You don't get advance credit.”

“I know.”

Price started the recording.

Marcus's voice came first.

“If the bonus doesn't cover it, we trigger the guarantee.”

Martin:

“No.”

“Then give me Northline.”

“Not yet.”

“You're out of time.”

A chair scraped.

Then Marcus:

“What about the wife?”

Martin answered:

“She stays where she is.”

“She owns the company.”

“On paper.”

“She could unwind everything.”

“She doesn't know.”

“And if Cal tells her?”

A long silence.

Then Martin:

“He won't.”

“How can you be sure?”

Martin's answer was calm.

“Because if he does, I'll tell Josie about Emma first.”

My stomach tightened.

Marcus laughed.

“And that helps you how?”

Martin:

“She'll think the betrayal is personal before she realizes it's financial.”

The recording ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

That was Martin's method reduced to one sentence.

Give me one wound so I would not immediately notice another.

Emma as distraction.

The roof as cover.

Cal as scapegoat.

Diane as instrument.

My identity as shield.

My father's estate as reserve.

Every human relationship converted into timing.

I looked at my father's letter again.

Keep control yourself.

Seven years too late, I finally understood exactly what he had tried to tell me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Cal Stopped Defending Himself and Reconstructed Every Dollar He Took,
