haven't said.”

My attorney tensed.

“What?”

“The eleven thousand.”

“What about it?”

“I can repay it.”

“With what money?”

“My truck.”

“You already mentioned selling it.”

“I sold it this morning.”

I stared.

“How much?”

“Twenty-eight thousand.”

“Where is the money?”

“Attorney trust account.”

“Why?”

“So I can't touch it.”

My lawyer asked for documentation.

Cal's lawyer provided it.

“Eleven thousand will be offered as restitution,” Cal said.

“Offered.”

“Yes.”

“The rest?”

“Whatever counsel says should happen.”

I nodded.

No gratitude.

Returning stolen money was not generosity.

Cal understood that.

He stood.

At the door, he stopped.

“I kept thinking if I fixed enough before you knew, the truth would hurt less.”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“I understand now that every thing I fixed secretly became another thing you had to discover.”

That was true.

Then he left.

My phone buzzed.

Diane.

Not anonymous anymore.

Martin is making his statement now.

A second message.

He is going to say Cal designed the ownership transfer.

I looked at the door Cal had just walked through.

For the first time since this began, I knew exactly which parts of Cal's guilt belonged to him.

That also meant I could recognize the parts someone else was trying to place there.

I forwarded Diane's message to Price.

Then I sent her Martin's own chronology.

If he intended to sacrifice his son to save himself, he was about to discover the disadvantage of keeping meticulous records.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Martin Tried to Put the
