We still need corroboration.”

Samuel pointed toward the envelope.

“There is more.”

Rebecca lifted the remaining handwritten statement.

It was Samuel’s.

Dated 2019.

He had documented Candice’s visits because the questions made him suspicious.

He had written that Candice repeatedly asked about Evelyn Carter’s property, Nora’s potential legal claims, guardianship standards and whether historical records could be used privately.

He had refused further cooperation.

Then he instructed St. Catherine’s staff to preserve the statement for me.

Rebecca read every page.

When she finished, she looked at Samuel.

“Why didn’t you contact Evelyn yourself?”

Samuel looked at me.

“Cowardice.”

At least he did not disguise it.

“I told myself it was not my place.”

“It became your place the morning you handed me another woman’s baby.”

“Yes.”

“Then you waited fifty-seven years.”

“Yes.”

He did not ask forgiveness.

I respected that more than I expected.

Julian stood near the door.

“I need air.”

I called after him.

“Do not leave the building.”

He nodded.

He stepped out.

Rebecca waited until the door shut.

Then she asked Samuel another question.

“Did Candice ever meet Nora?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

“No.”

“Did you know they were in contact?”

Samuel nodded.

“Nora telephoned me after their meeting.”

“What did she say?”

Samuel’s expression changed.

“She was frightened.”

My hands tightened.

“Of Candice?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said Candice threatened to expose the circumstances of Julian’s birth publicly if Nora pursued Arthur’s money.”

I stared.

Rebecca stopped writing.

“She threatened Nora with the family secret.”

Samuel nodded.

“And Nora withdrew.”

“For a while.”

“What changed?”

Samuel looked toward the window.

“She discovered the account had been drained.”

I thought of the email in Candice’s red folder.

Nora demanding truth about the money.

Julian’s money by blood.

Arthur’s money by guilt.

Money Candice had taken.

“What did Nora plan to do?”

“Contact Evelyn.”

My heart beat hard.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Samuel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then Rebecca’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

“Perhaps we can ask her.”

I looked up.

“Nora?”

“My investigator reached her.”

Julian reentered just then.

His face was damp where he had splashed water on it.

Rebecca continued.

“Nora is willing to meet.”

He stopped.

“Today?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“She asked us to come to her.”

I thought of the woman who had grown up believing Arthur was her grandfather only to discover Julian was her father.

A woman who had been denied money, history and family by people claiming to protect something.

“Where does she live?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Not far from your house.”

Julian laughed softly in disbelief.

“How not far?”

“Six streets.”

That stunned me.

My granddaughter had been living six streets away.

Perhaps I had passed her at the grocery store.

Perhaps we had stood in the same pharmacy line.

Perhaps Arthur’s hidden family had been closer than any of us knew.

Julian looked frightened.

“I don’t know what to say to her.”

“You tell the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That you didn’t know.”

“What if she doesn’t believe me?”

“That is her choice.”

He nodded slowly.

I understood what he was really asking.

“What if she hates me?”

I took his hand.

“Then you let her.”

His eyes filled.

“You do not demand forgiveness from someone before they have had time to understand the wound.”

Samuel watched us.

His own face crumpled.

Maybe he heard a sentence he needed too.

Rebecca gathered the records.

“Evelyn, before we leave, there is one final issue.”

“What?”

She handed me Samuel’s statement.

Near the bottom, one line had been underlined.

I read slowly.

Candice Carter stated that if Nora could not claim the property while Evelyn Carter remained competent, then “competence may be the only obstacle.”

The words blurred.

I blinked until they sharpened.

Julian read over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“She said this?”

Samuel nodded.

“Exactly.”

“When?”

“2019.”

Three years before moving into my home.

I folded the paper.

Carefully.

Once.

Twice.

Then I placed it in Rebecca’s folder.

I had spent four years wondering when Candice had begun seeing me as a problem to solve.

Now I had an answer.

Before she moved in.

Before the missing bills.

Before the appointments.

Before the forgotten conversations I had never had.

She had been waiting for my age to become useful.

We left St. Catherine’s at 1:14 that afternoon.

Before we reached the parking lot, Rebecca’s phone rang.

She answered.

Then stopped walking.

“What?”

She listened.

Her expression tightened.

Julian moved closer.

“What happened?”

Rebecca ended the call.

“That was the deputy.”

My stomach turned.

“Candice?”

“Yes.”

“She returned to your house.”

“For what?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“She wasn’t alone.”

“Who was with her?”

“Two men from a property liquidation company.”

Julian went pale.

Rebecca continued.

“And they had a signed authorization allowing them to remove the contents of your house.”

I stopped.

“Signed by whom?”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“You.”

<a
