stared.

“You recorded her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because by then I knew she was lying.”

Rebecca asked, “What did she say?”

Nora looked toward the window.

“I asked her directly why she was keeping Julian from the truth.”

“And?”

“She told me Julian would never choose a stranger over his wife.”

Julian shook his head.

“That’s not evidence of anything.”

“There’s more.”

Nora’s hands tightened.

“I asked what she planned to do about Arthur’s missing money.”

“What did she say?”

Nora hesitated.

“She said she would replace it once Evelyn’s house became available.”

Julian stopped breathing.

I felt Rebecca shift beside me.

Nora continued.

“I asked what she meant.”

“What did she say?”

“She laughed.”

My skin went cold.

“And then?”

“She said old people do not live forever.”

Julian whispered, “Jesus.”

Rebecca remained careful.

“Exact words?”

Nora nodded.

“Those exact words.”

I stared at the flash drive in the evidence bag.

For years Candice had called me forgetful.

For years she had turned age into a weapon.

Now somewhere inside a small piece of plastic might be her own voice explaining exactly how long she had been waiting for my life to become useful to her.

The deputy looked toward Rebecca.

“We’ll need proper authorization before reviewing it.”

“Understood.”

Julian walked to the window.

Candice stood beside the patrol car.

She looked furious.

Not frightened.

Not anymore.

Furious.

Then Nora stood.

Julian turned back.

She looked at him.

“I need to tell you something before that recording is played.”

His face tightened.

“What?”

“It isn’t only about Candice.”

“What else is on it?”

Nora took a breath.

“Arthur.”

I felt the room shift again.

Julian stared.

“You recorded Dad?”

“No.”

Nora shook her head.

“Candice had an old recording.”

“Of Dad?”

“Yes.”

“What was he saying?”

Nora looked at me.

“He was talking about you.”

My throat tightened.

“What about me?”

Nora’s expression softened with pity.

“That if you ever learned the truth about Julian, he was afraid you would leave him.”

I laughed without humor.

“He was right.”

Nora swallowed.

“That wasn’t the worst part.”

No one moved.

“What was?”

She answered quietly.

“Arthur said he knew you had already lost one baby.”

I stared.

Julian frowned.

“One?”

Nora’s eyes filled.

“Before Julian.”

I could not breathe.

Because I had never told Julian.

Arthur and I had lost a daughter before he was born.

Stillborn.

We buried her under a small stone.

Julian knew there had been a miscarriage.

Not a daughter.

Not the name.

Not how far along I had been.

Only Arthur and I knew.

Nora continued.

“On the recording, Arthur said he could not let you lose a second child.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly the horror became painfully understandable.

Not forgivable.

But understandable.

Arthur had watched me bury one baby.

Then watched another die.

Samuel offered him a living child.

Arthur chose.

And then spent the rest of his life making everyone pay for that choice.

I opened my eyes.

“There is still something missing.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“What?”

“Why Candice had Arthur’s recording.”

Nora nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Julian stared at the flash drive.

Then he looked outside at his wife.

And for the first time since the locks changed that morning, his anger became something colder.

“What else did my father give her?”

<a
