10 – Arthur’s Recording Explained Why He Chose Julian, but It Also Revealed the Secret Arrangement He Made With Candice Before He Died

The flash drive could not be reviewed immediately.

That was the first thing everyone agreed upon.

The second was that Candice was not leaving with it.

The deputy secured the drive while Rebecca arranged to preserve its contents properly.

Julian hated the delay.

I did not.

By then I had learned enough to distrust revelations delivered too quickly.

Facts needed context.

Context needed proof.

And grief needed room.

Nora stayed.

She seemed ready to leave twice.

Both times Julian found a reason to ask another question.

Not a personal one.

Not yet.

He asked about Rose.

About Claire.

About where Nora grew up.

About college.

He circled around the word daughter without saying it.

Nora answered carefully.

She had spent forty-one years learning not to expect anything from him.

A few hours could not undo that.

Rebecca eventually asked the deputy whether we could retrieve a laptop from Nora’s house to examine her copy of the recording, assuming she still had one.

Nora nodded.

“I do.”

Julian looked at her.

“You kept backups?”

“After dealing with Candice, I kept backups of backups.”

Rebecca almost smiled.

“Excellent instinct.”

Nora’s house was six streets away, exactly as Rebecca had said.

We went in two cars.

Julian drove me.

Nora rode with Rebecca.

Candice remained behind with the deputy until arrangements could be made regarding her belongings and vehicle.

Julian watched her in the mirror as we left.

“She’s going to say I abandoned her.”

I looked at him.

“Did you?”

He gripped the wheel.

“I don’t know.”

“That is not the question she will ask.”

“What will she ask?”

“Whether you will still protect her from consequences.”

He drove in silence.

Nora’s house surprised me.

Not because it was large or expensive.

Because it was ordinary.

One-story brick.

Blue shutters.

A bicycle leaning beside the garage.

Two planters of rosemary near the steps.

For decades I had imagined Arthur’s secret as something distant and dramatic.

Instead it lived six streets away and grew herbs.

Nora unlocked the door.

A dog immediately barked from somewhere inside.

Julian startled.

Nora looked embarrassed.

“I forgot about Pepper.”

A small brown dog appeared.

It charged Julian.

Then stopped.

Sniffed his shoe.

Sneezed.

Julian looked down.

“That seems judgmental.”

Nora laughed.

The sound surprised all of us.

For one second they looked less like strangers connected by catastrophe and more like two people who might have met under normal circumstances.

Then the moment passed.

Nora brought us to a small office.

Shelves covered one wall.

Family photographs sat everywhere.

Claire.

Rose.

Nora as a child.

Nora at graduation.

Nora with a man I assumed had once been her husband.

Nora with a teenage boy.

Julian noticed that one.

“Your son?”

“Yes.”

He went still.

“What’s his name?”

“Ethan.”

“How old?”

“Seventeen.”

Julian stared at the photograph.

He had acquired a daughter and grandson in one afternoon.

Nora noticed.

“He’s at his father’s this weekend.”

Julian nodded.

“Does he know?”

“Some.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

“Why?”

“Because I promised myself I wouldn’t make secrecy hereditary.”

I liked her immediately for that sentence.

Julian seemed to as well.

Nora opened a locked drawer.

Inside were three flash drives.

She selected one.

“This should contain the recording.”

Rebecca asked, “Original file?”

“A copy of the file Candice gave me.”

“Candice gave you Arthur’s recording?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nora looked toward Julian.

“To prove she knew things about the family that I didn’t.”

Julian frowned.

“That sounds like her.”

Nora connected the drive to an old laptop.

She found the file.

Date created: February 14, 2011.

Arthur died that April.

My stomach tightened.

“He recorded it two months before he died.”

Nora nodded.

“According to Candice.”

The file lasted forty-three minutes.

Rebecca asked whether we wanted to listen.

Julian looked at me.

I nodded.

Nora pressed play.

Arthur’s voice filled the room.

I had not heard it in eleven years.

Time did something strange.

My husband was suddenly alive in a small speaker.

Older.

Breathless.

But unmistakably Arthur.

For several seconds I could not hear the words.

Only him.

The pauses.

The throat clearing.

The slight whistle he developed after surgery.

I put both hands in my lap.

“Continue.”

The recording appeared to begin in the middle of a conversation.

Candice’s younger voice asked whether Arthur was certain.

He answered yes.

He said he was running out of time.

Julian leaned closer.

Candice asked what she was supposed to do if Evelyn discovered the papers.

Arthur said:

“Protect her.”

I shut my eyes.

There it was again.

The word that had caused so much damage.

Candice asked what protection meant.

Arthur said I had already buried a daughter in 1967.

Julian looked at me.

“You never told me.”

“Not fully.”

Arthur continued.

The first baby had been stillborn at thirty-five weeks.

We named her Anne.

Julian whispered, “Anne.”

I nodded.

Arthur said that when our son died two years later, he watched something inside me disappear.

I remembered only fragments of that morning.

Pain.

Medication.

Fear.

Then waking and hearing Arthur say the baby was alive.

He had called it a miracle.

On the recording, Arthur admitted Samuel came to him with the idea.

A teenage mother.

A baby headed for adoption.

No paperwork finalized yet.

An overwhelmed hospital.

A storm.

Two frightened men convincing themselves fate had presented a solution.

Julian’s jaw tightened.

Arthur said he knew it was wrong.

He also said that at the time wrong seemed smaller than watching me bury another child.

I began to cry.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I remembered the woman I had been.

Twenty-four years old.

One dead daughter behind me.

A second pregnancy filled with fear.

Arthur had known exactly what another burial might do to me.

That knowledge had made his decision more human.

And more terrible.

Julian reached for my hand.

I took it.

On the recording, Candice asked whether Arthur regretted raising Julian.

His answer came immediately.

“Never.”

Julian lowered his head.

Arthur said Julian was his son in every way that mattered to him.

Then his voice broke.

“But I regret stealing everyone else’s choices.”

I closed my eyes.

Finally.

A sentence with no excuse inside it.

Arthur admitted Rose lost a son.

I lost the right to grieve mine.

Julian lost the truth about his birth.

Claire and Julian lost the chance to avoid a relationship that should never have happened.

Nora inherited the consequences.

Samuel lived under guilt.

Everyone had paid.

Arthur said:

“I thought one lie would save Evelyn. Then I needed ten lies to protect the first one.”

Rebecca wrote the sentence down.

The recording continued.

Candice asked why Arthur had chosen her to tell.

That question made Julian look up.

Arthur was quiet for a long time.

Then he answered.

“Because Julian loves you.”

Candice laughed nervously.

Arthur continued.

“Because when I’m gone, you will have more influence over what he does than anyone else.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

Arthur said he needed Candice to safeguard certain records until he died.

Afterward, if circumstances were right, she was supposed to tell Julian.

Nora stopped the playback.

Julian stared.

“She was supposed to tell me.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Nora shook her head.

“Keep listening.”

She pressed play.

Candice asked how she would know when circumstances were right.

Arthur said that if Nora ever made contact, Julian should be told.

Immediately.

Julian stood.

“Stop.”

Nora paused it.

He looked sick.

“Nora contacted her in 2015.”

“Yes.”

“Dad explicitly told Candice to tell me if Nora contacted her.”

“Yes.”

Julian paced.

“She wasn’t protecting his promise.”

“No.”

“She violated it.”

“Yes.”

The realization seemed to rearrange something.

For years Candice had hidden behind Arthur’s authority.

Now we had Arthur’s own voice contradicting her.

“Play it.”

Nora did.

Arthur described the account he had created for Nora.

He said it belonged morally to her, though the structure was complicated.

Candice asked whether Julian knew.

No.

I knew?

No.

Arthur said he had used proceeds from property sales he considered separately his, though he admitted legal ownership might be disputed.

Rebecca wrote furiously.

Then Candice asked:

“What happens if Evelyn finds out?”

Arthur said:

“She may hate me.”

Candice replied:

“She could challenge the account.”

Arthur answered:

“She can.”

That surprised me.

He had expected me to have rights.

Then he added:

“But no one should take her house.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She noticed.

Arthur continued.

“The Savannah house is Evelyn’s. Whatever happens, that house is hers.”

Julian sat down slowly.

Arthur had specifically protected the property Candice later tried to use.

Candice asked whether Nora could make a claim against it.

Arthur said:

“Not if I have anything to say about it.”

Then something unexpected happened.

Candice asked:

“What if Evelyn can’t manage it someday?”

Arthur was silent.

My skin went cold.

2011.

Four years before Nora contacted Candice.

Eight years before Candice asked Samuel about competence.

Eleven years before moving into my home.

The idea had already entered her mind.

Arthur answered carefully.

“If Evelyn ever needs help, Julian helps her.”

Candice asked:

“And me?”

Arthur said:

“You help Julian.”

Not me.

Not control of my finances.

Not the house.

Help Julian.

Candice pressed.

“What if Julian isn’t good with the details?”

Arthur laughed weakly.

“He gets that from me.”

Then he became serious.

“You do not take Evelyn’s choices from her.”

The room went completely still.

I could barely breathe.

Arthur’s voice continued.

“She trusted me more than I deserved. Do not make her pay again for trusting family.”

I covered my mouth.

Julian cried silently.

Nora looked away.

Even Rebecca stopped writing.

For all Arthur’s failures, he had understood one thing at the end.

Candice had heard it.

And ignored it.

The recording continued.

Arthur instructed Candice to give me a sealed letter if the truth ever surfaced.

The one we found that morning.

He told her to preserve the original agreement.

He told her where records were hidden in the desk.

That explained everything.

Candice knew the compartment.

She knew the documents.

She knew the financial history.

She knew enough to manipulate all of it.

Then Arthur said something I did not expect.

“If anything happens to the Nora account, tell Evelyn.”

Candice asked why.

“Because she is the one person who will make it right, even if she hates me for it.”

I stared at the computer.

Arthur had trusted me to repair the damage he could not.

Candice had spent years preventing exactly that.

The recording shifted.

Candice’s tone changed.

She asked:

“What if Nora never comes?”

Arthur answered:

“Then leave it alone until Julian knows.”

“And if Julian never knows?”

“He needs to.”

“Even if it destroys explained.

Samuel.

The trust.

Claire.

Nora.

Everything.

Almost.

Near the end, Arthur said:

“There is one thing I have not question.

Arthur said:

“Samuel lied about her too.”

I stopped breathing.

Nora paused the recording it.”

Arthur’s voice returned.

He said the daughter I believed had been stillborn in 1967 had lived for nearly twelve hours.

I stared at the screen.

No.

No.

No.

Arthur said I had been heavily sedated after complications.

Samuel told him Anne had severe respiratory problems and little chance.

Arthur held her.

I did not.

He said Samuel advised him not to wake me because the baby would almost certainly die before morning.

And she did.

Julian whispered, “Mom…”

I could not look at him.

Arthur’s voice broke on the recording.

“I let Evelyn believe Anne was born dead because I thought it would hurt less.”

The room disappeared.

Fifty-nine years.

I had never held my daughter because two men decided grief needed editing.

I heard myself make a sound.

Nora stopped the recording.

I bent forward.

Not fainting.

Not crying exactly.

Something deeper.

Something old.

Julian knelt in front of me.

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“She lived.”

His face crumpled.

“For twelve had taken that too.

“Where is she buried?”

Julian asked.

I stared.

The question should have been simple.

Oakwood Cemetery.

Small stone.

Anne Carter.

But then I remembered something.

There was no hospital record in my files.

Arthur arranged everything.

Arthur handled the funeral.

Arthur told me the cemetery required a closed service because of the baby’s condition.

I had been too weak to attend.

The cold entered me slowly.

I looked at Rebecca.

“I never saw Anne after delivery.”

She understood.

I continued.

“I never saw the coffin.”

Nora’s face changed.

Julian stared.

“Mom.”

I stood.

“Where is my daughter buried?”

No one answered.

The recording still had seven minutes remaining.

I pointed.

“Play the rest.”

Nora did.

Arthur’s voice returned.

He said he had gone to Anne’s grave many times.

Good.

Relief almost came.

Then he said:

“Not the grave Evelyn thinks.”

Everything stopped.

Candice asked what that meant.

Arthur answered:

“Samuel moved her.”

I stared at the laptop.

Moved her.

Where?

Why?

Arthur said he did not discover the truth until years later.

The cemetery plot I had visited belonged to an empty infant coffin.

I could no longer feel my hands.

Julian whispered, “What the
