11 – We Reached St. Bartholomew’s After Sunset and Found My Daughter’s Grave Disturbed Long Before Any of Us Knew to Look

By six o’clock, the day had become impossible to measure.

Morning belonged to the locksmith.

Afternoon belonged to Nora.

Evening belonged to a daughter I had mourned under the wrong circumstances for fifty-nine years.

Rebecca insisted on making calls before anyone drove to St. Bartholomew’s.

This time I allowed it.

Not because I wanted patience.

Because someone had opened Anne’s grave.

That changed the question from family history to something physical.

Something recent perhaps.

Something that could be damaged if we arrived carelessly.

St. Bartholomew’s had closed as an active church in 2003.

The building remained, but ownership had changed twice.

The cemetery behind it was maintained irregularly by a small historical trust.

Rebecca located the current caretaker.

His name was Walter Price.

He agreed to meet us.

We took two cars.

Nora rode with Julian.

I rode with Rebecca.

I chose that arrangement intentionally.

Julian and Nora needed time without me between them.

A mother can become too much gravity.

Rebecca noticed.

“You’re giving them space.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“I did not ask for approval.”

A smile touched her mouth.

“I know.”

We drove west.

The sky had turned copper.

Savannah’s late-summer heat softened but did not disappear.

Roadside trees grew denser.

The city thinned.

I watched telephone poles pass and thought about Anne.

Not the stillborn daughter I had imagined.

The living one.

Twelve hours.

What had she heard?

Had she cried?

Had anyone held her besides Arthur?

Did Samuel?

Was she warm?

Did she know she was alone?

That last thought became unbearable.

I stared out the window.

Rebecca said quietly, “Arthur held her.”

I looked at her.

“How did you know what I was thinking?”

“I didn’t.”

She kept driving.

“But you mentioned the recording.”

Yes.

Arthur held her.

At least that.

St. Bartholomew’s appeared behind an iron fence covered with vines.

The church itself was small and white, paint peeling from the siding.

The steeple leaned slightly.

Behind it, old gravestones disappeared beneath live oaks.

Walter Price waited beside a utility cart.

He was in his seventies, sunburned, wearing work pants and a straw hat.

Rebecca introduced us.

When he heard my name, his expression changed.

“You’re Evelyn Carter.”

“Yes.”

He removed his hat.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

He looked toward the cemetery.

“That depends what we find.”

Julian and Nora arrived moments later.

They got out together.

No visible transformation had occurred between them.

But they stood closer.

That was enough.

Walter led us along a narrow path.

The cemetery smelled of wet leaves and old stone.

Mosquitoes gathered around our faces.

Julian kept one hand near my elbow without touching me.

Good.

Walter stopped beneath a large oak.

“Old infant section.”

The stones were smaller here.

Some had no names.

Some only dates.

He walked past two rows.

Then stopped.

A newer granite marker stood among older stones.

ANNE CARTER
BELOVED DAUGHTER
1967

My knees weakened.

Arthur.

He had put her name there after all.

Eventually.

I touched the stone.

Cool.

Smooth.

Real.

For fifty-nine years I had visited another grave.

An empty one.

This was the first time I had stood where my daughter had actually been buried.

I lowered myself carefully.

Julian crouched beside me.

Nora remained a few steps away.

I traced Anne’s name.

“I’m sorry.”

No one interrupted.

“I should have found you.”

The absurdity struck immediately.

She had been dead.

Finding her would not have changed that.

But mothers do not reason properly around lost children.

I whispered her name once.

Then again.

Anne.

The second time felt different.

Like introducing myself.

Walter gave me several minutes.

Then Rebecca asked, “Where was the disturbance?”

Walter pointed behind the stone.

The ground had settled unevenly.

At first I saw only dirt.

Then I noticed newer cuts through the grass.

A rectangular patch.

Nora crouched.

“When was this opened?”

Walter rubbed his chin.

“Not sure.”

“How could you not
