immediately.

Rebecca arranged for us to meet at the sheriff’s substation where the box could be documented properly.

Walter stayed behind at St. Bartholomew’s.

Molina promised the grave would be protected until specialists could confirm that Anne’s burial remained undisturbed.

I believed Candice had paid them eight hundred dollars to retrieve a metal box from behind Anne’s marker.

She told them the box belonged to her late father-in-law and contained private family thirteen.”

Nora nodded.

“Maybe not.”

Rebecca asked, “Could Rose have known Arthur before 1969?”

Nora thought.

“I never saw anything saying that.”

Another layer.

Always another.

We turned to the other materials.

The first folder contained cemetery documents for Anne.

Arthur had purchased the real marker in 1998.

The second contained medical paperwork.

Copies of Samuel’s notes from 1967.

Anne’s birth.

Her respiratory distress.

Her death.

Time of death: 11:46 p.m.

I stared at the line.

She had lived nearly twelve hours exactly as Arthur said.

Then I saw another entry.

Mother not informed of live birth per spouse request.

My vision blurred.

Julian put his hand over mine.

No one spoke.

Another note.

Infant held by father.

Chaplain present.

That helped.

Slightly.

Anne had not died alone.

Arthur had held her.

A chaplain had been there.

Someone had said words over her.

I breathed.

Then Rebecca found a sealed envelope.

Written across the front:

EVELYN – ABOUT SAMUEL.

Arthur again.

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Rebecca opened it.

The letter was dated 2010.

Arthur explained the photograph.

Samuel had shown it to him shortly before our wedding.

Apparently Samuel claimed we had kissed.

Arthur believed him.

For nearly a year after we married, Arthur suspected I had been involved with Samuel.

I stared.

“He never asked.”

The letter admitted that.

Arthur had been too proud.

Too jealous.

Too afraid.

When Anne was born sick, Samuel was the attending resident who helped manage the case.

Arthur already distrusted him.

Yet when Samuel said Anne would die and waking me would only create more suffering, Arthur agreed.

Then after Julian’s birth two years later, Samuel offered the unthinkable solution.

Arthur admitted something important.

He believed Samuel’s suggestion partly because Samuel knew Arthur’s greatest weakness.

Fear of losing me.

But Arthur also suspected another motive.

Samuel wanted lifelong leverage.

Rebecca stopped.

“What kind?”

I asked.

“Financial.”

Arthur believed Samuel’s early payments were not compensation for expenses.

They were blackmail.

Julian stared.

“So Dad wasn’t bribing Samuel to keep quiet?”

“Not exactly,” Rebecca said.

“He may have been paying because sold it repeatedly.

Nora crossed her arms.

“That sounds like him.”

Julian looked at her.

“You knew?”

“He asked Arthur for money was threatening to tell me.

Why?

Money.

Arthur arranged the agreement.

My signature was obtained under false pretenses.

Arthur admitted it plainly.

I felt cold.

There it was.

Proof.

I had signed.

But I had been deceived.

Arthur wrote:

Evelyn believed she was confirming
