13 – The Unknown Voice on Dad’s Recorder Belonged to a Man My Mother Had Never Mentioned, but Rebecca Knew Immediately

The voice analysis took two days.

During those two days, I discovered that waiting for adults to identify a voice could feel worse than hearing one.

Every phone call made me tense.

Every time Elena entered a room carrying a folder, I watched her hands first.

The recorder had captured only a few seconds.

Dad.

Mom.

Then the stranger.

Daniel, get in the car.

His voice was calm.

Not threatening.

That somehow bothered me more.

Collins told me investigators were comparing it against archived interviews, court recordings, old business calls, and people already connected to Dad.

"How many people?"

"Enough."

"That's not a number."

"Several dozen."

I had become irritating about precision.

Numbers were still easier than people.

Three days after the recorder was found, Collins arrived at the foster home just after breakfast.

Elena came with him.

I knew before either spoke.

"You found him."

Collins nodded.

"We have a strong identification."

"Strong?"

"The recording isn't perfect, but multiple comparisons support it."

"Who?"

He sat across from me.

"His name is Thomas Vale."

Vale.

I knew the surname immediately.

"Nina."

"Nina's brother."

I stared.

"She has a brother?"

"Yes."

"Did she tell you?"

"Not initially."

"Of course not."

Thomas Vale had been a police officer.

Not in our town.

In a neighboring county.

Eleven years earlier, he worked traffic and investigations.

"He was at the hotel?"

"We believe so."

"Why?"

"That is what we're working to establish."

"Did he know Dad?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Through Nina."

Another hidden connection.

Every answer seemed to contain a door behind it.

"What happened to him?"

"He left law enforcement eight years ago."

"Where is he now?"

"Arizona."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Did he agree to talk?"

"After being contacted, he retained counsel."

I laughed without humor.

"Everybody in this story has a lawyer."

"At this point, that is probably wise."

"Did he deny being there?"

"At first."

"Then?"

"When investigators played the audio, he changed his statement."

My pulse increased.

"What did he say?"

Collins opened the folder.

Thomas admitted meeting Nina at the hotel.

He said she called because she was frightened about the financial records Dad had discovered.

Thomas claimed he came only to make sure she was safe.

"Was he in Room 216?"

"Yes."

"During the argument?"

"Part of it."

"Did he see Mom?"

"Yes."

"Dad?"

"Yes."

"Jonathan?"

"Yes."

"So the fourth person wasn't a mystery to Nina."

"No."

"And she lied."

"Yes."

Finally, clean answers.

I almost missed ambiguity.

"What did Thomas do?"

"He says he tried to calm things down."

"Then why is he on the road with Dad?"

Collins looked at the report.

"Thomas claims Valerie asked him to help retrieve the briefcase."

My throat tightened.

"From Dad?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"She told him Daniel was intoxicated and carrying confidential company records."

"He believed her?"

"He says he did."

"Was he stupid?"

Elena gave me a look.

I didn't apologize.

"What happened after the hotel?"

According to Thomas, Dad left first.

Jonathan followed later.

Mom left carrying the briefcase.

Nina drove home.

Thomas stayed behind briefly.

Then Mom called him.

"From where?"

"Near the gas station."

"Why?"

"She said Daniel had followed her."

That was new.

"Followed her?"

"Thomas says Valerie was frightened."

"Was she?"

"We don't know."

"What did she ask Thomas to do?"

"Come help."

"Help with what?"

"He says she wasn't specific."

I leaned forward.

"And he went."

"Yes."

Thomas drove his own vehicle to the area.

He found Mom's car near the gas station.

Jonathan was there.

Dad's company sedan was nearby.

"What happened?"

"Thomas says Daniel was furious and demanded the briefcase."

"Did Mom have it?"

"Yes."

"Then?"

"He says Daniel took it."

That contradicted where investigators eventually found it.

"How did Mom get it back?"

"Thomas says he doesn't know."

"Convenient."

"Very."

Collins didn't correct me.

Thomas claimed Dad put the briefcase into the sedan.

Then insisted on driving.

"Who was passenger?"

"Thomas."

The traffic-camera image.

My stomach tightened.

"So he admits it."

"Yes."

"Why did he get in?"

"He says he wanted to keep Daniel from hurting himself."

"But Dad was driving."

"Yes."

"That's a terrible way to do it."

"Agreed."

"Where was Mom?"

"Thomas says she remained with Jonathan."

"At the gas station?"

"Initially."

"Then how does her voice get on the recorder at 11:53?"

Collins nodded.

"That is one of the contradictions."

Thomas said the recorder must have captured them earlier.

But the device timestamp matched its internal log and another recorded time reference.

Investigators considered it reliable.

"So Thomas is lying."

"He is contradicting physical evidence."

"That's a lawyer way to say lying."

"Sometimes lawyer ways matter."

I crossed my arms.

"What did he say about Dad's death?"

Thomas claimed he rode with Dad for several miles.

Dad drove north.

Thomas tried to persuade him to return to town.

They argued.

Then Dad stopped.

"Where?"

"Thomas gave a location near a service road."

"What happened?"

"He got out."

"Again?"

"Yes."

"Everyone keeps getting out of Dad's car."

Collins looked tired.

"I've noticed."

"Then what?"

"Thomas says Daniel drove away alone."

"How did Thomas leave?"

"He claims Valerie picked him up."

Of course.

"What time?"

"Shortly after midnight."

"Then Mom was there."

"According to Thomas."

"Did he tell police that eleven years ago?"

"No."

"Why?"

"He says Valerie asked him not to."

"Was he still a police officer?"

"Yes."

That landed harder than I expected.

"He was a cop and lied about a death investigation?"

"That is now under review."

"Why would he risk that for Mom?"

Collins didn't answer.

I knew there was more.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Elena looked at him.

Then he said it.

"Thomas and Valerie had a relationship."

I stared.

"What kind?"

"Personal."

"You mean affair."

"Yes."

"At the same time as Jonathan?"

"Possibly overlapping."

For a second, I couldn't process it.

Mom.

Jonathan.

Thomas.

Dad.

Money.

Secrets stacked so tightly that I wondered whether Mom had ever lived a single life anyone actually knew.

"Did Dad know about Thomas?"

"No evidence suggests he did."

"Did Jonathan?"

"Apparently not."

"What about Nina?"

"Yes."

"She covered for her brother."

"That appears to be part of why she withheld information."

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, sprinklers swept back and forth over the lawn.

Everything looked stupidly normal.

"Did Thomas think I might be his daughter too?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"The timing does not support it."

"Good."

I hated that I felt relief.

Then Collins told me another piece.

Thomas had handled part of the original crash response.

I turned around.

"What?"

"He wasn't the primary investigator, but he was called to the scene."

"After riding with Dad?"

"According to his current statement, yes."

My skin prickled.

"He left Dad. Mom picked him up. Dad crashed. Then Thomas came back as a police officer?"

"That is what records indicate."

"Did he tell anyone he'd been with Dad?"

"No."

"Did he touch the car?"

"Scene logs show he entered the perimeter."

"Why?"

"He documented the roadway."

"Could he have removed things?"

"We're investigating."

"The briefcase."

"Possibly."

"The watch."

"Possibly."

I pressed both palms against my forehead.

The original investigation hadn't simply missed a witness.

One witness had been wearing a badge.

"Was Thomas the reason the case looked like an accident?"

"We do not yet have evidence establishing that."

"But he could have influenced it."

"Yes."

Rebecca learned Thomas's identity that afternoon.

Her reaction was immediate.

"I know him."

Everyone looked at her.

"You said you didn't know the fourth person."

"I didn't recognize him from the description."

"But you know Thomas Vale."

"Yes."

"How?"

Rebecca sat down slowly.

"Daniel complained about him once."

"When?"

"Months before he died."

"What did he say?"

"That Valerie was spending time with a cop."

My pulse jumped.

"You knew Mom might be seeing him?"

"I thought Daniel was paranoid."

"Why didn't you tell investigators?"

"I forgot the name."

I gave her a look.

She flinched.

"I'm not lying this time."

"That's what people say after they lied the first time."

Rebecca accepted that.

"What else did Dad say?"

"That Thomas had helped Valerie get out of a traffic charge."

"Anything else?"

"He thought Thomas was watching him."

The room went quiet.

"Watching Dad?"

"Following him."

Collins immediately began writing.

"When?"

"A month or two before the crash."

"Did Daniel document it?"

"I don't know."

We searched the copies from Dad's files.

Buried inside a folder labeled MISC were photographs of vehicles.

License plates.

Dates.

One license plate belonged to Thomas.

Dad had photographed his car three times.

Outside Dad's office.

Near our house.

Near the bank.

Beside one photo Dad wrote:

Same officer again. Val says coincidence.

My stomach turned.

"He was following him."

"Potentially."

Even I didn't object this time.

Another image showed Thomas speaking to Mom beside her car.

Dad's handwritten note:

She says he stopped to help.

The date was six weeks before Dad died.

Rebecca leaned closer.

"I never saw these."

"Mom did," I said.

"Maybe."

"No. She ended up with the originals."

That mattered.

Mom had known what Dad was collecting.

Maybe that was why the second briefcase became so important.

Investigators obtained Thomas's old personnel records.

He had received disciplinary complaints.

Improper database searches.

Unauthorized access to vehicle registrations.

Informal warnings.

Nothing that ended his career.

Then one old audit changed everything.

Thomas had searched Dad's license plate repeatedly in the weeks before the crash.

"Why?"

"He claims Valerie asked him to check whether there were outstanding issues."

"That makes no sense."

"Agreed."

"He was tracking Dad."

"We're investigating that possibility."

The same audit showed another search.

Rebecca Mercer.

Then another.

Jonathan Pike.

Then, two days before Dad died:

Daniel Mercer vehicle registration.

Alternate company vehicles.

Dad's sedan.

The one that crashed.

"He knew what car Dad might use."

"Yes."

Collins no longer softened it.

Thomas's lawyer tried to explain the searches as favors.

Investigators weren't satisfied.

Then the watch from the briefcase came back from preliminary testing.

The blood under the strap contained usable DNA.

Not Dad's.

Not Jonathan's.

Not Mark's.

The laboratory compared it with a voluntary sample Thomas had supplied before realizing the watch existed.

It matched.

I stared at Collins when he told me.

"Thomas's blood."

"Yes."

"His watch."

"Likely."

"Found inside Dad's briefcase."

"Yes."

"That Mom hid."

"Yes."

"How did his blood get on it?"

"Thomas says he cut his wrist during the hotel argument."

"Did anyone mention an injury?"

"Arthur remembers one of the men bleeding."

"Which?"

"He couldn't say."

Thomas claimed the watch clasp broke and he lost it.

But if he lost it at the hotel, why was it sealed in a plastic pouch inside Dad's briefcase?

Someone had deliberately preserved it.

Dad?

Mom?

Jonathan?

The answer came from the recorder.

Forensic technicians recovered one more damaged audio segment.

The time was later than the first.

12:04 a.m.

Wind.

Traffic.

Then Dad's voice.

"You hit me."

Thomas answered.

"You swung first."

Mom said, "Both of you stop."

Dad:

"Give me the case and get away from me."

Then a metallic sound.

Thomas cursed.

Dad said:

"I'm keeping that."

The watch.

Dad had taken it.

Not as evidence of blood.

As proof Thomas had been there.

Then Dad said something almost drowned by wind.

"I already sent copies."

Mom answered clearly.

"No, you didn't."

Dad laughed.

"You really don't know me at all."

The audio stopped.

I stared at Collins.

"Copies of what?"

"The records."

"Where did he send them?"

"We're searching."

"To Rebecca?"

"She says no."

"Attorney?"

"No surviving record yet."

"Then somebody has them."

"Possibly."

I leaned back.

Dad had stood beside Mom and Thomas at 12:04.

Alive.

Angry.

Holding the briefcase.

The crash was estimated between 12:10 and 12:30.

Thomas's earlier story that he left Dad before midnight was impossible.

Mom's original story that she was home was impossible.

Jonathan's story that he knew nothing after being dropped off was becoming less believable by the hour.

At least three people had lied about Dad's final minutes.

Then investigators recovered a location from Thomas's old police radio.

At 12:18 a.m., his unit transmitted a brief automatic signal.

Near the crash road.

Not at the station.

Not near home.

Less than a mile from where Dad's car went over the edge.

Collins looked at me.

"For the first time, we can independently place Thomas close to the crash at approximately the relevant time."

"Was Mom with him?"

"We don't know."

"Can you place her?"

"Not yet."

"But Thomas was there."

"Yes."

I looked at Dad's photograph on the table.

For eleven years, everyone had said the road killed him.

Now a man who had followed him, lied about him, slept with his wife, tampered with the truth afterward, and shed blood during their final confrontation had been within a mile of the crash.

And he had spent all eleven years pretending he'd never been there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Thomas Finally Explained What
