me?”

His expression changed.

“No.”

“Did she know you were sending money to Stephanie?”

“She knew I helped with Emma.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“She didn’t know details.”

“And Marcus?”

“Same.”

I nodded.

“Tomorrow I’m going to verify every detail myself.”

I started upstairs.

“Josie.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“There’s one thing you should know.”

I turned slowly.

Cal stood beneath the hallway light, looking suddenly older.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“The twenty-five hundred dollar check you found.”

“The most recent one?”

“Yes.”

“What about it?”

“That one wasn’t from our savings.”

A cold sensation moved down my back.

“Where was it from?”

He looked at the folder in my hand.

Then at me.

“Your account.”

I stared at him.

“You took twenty-five hundred dollars from my personal account this week?”

“I was going to replace it.”

“When?”

“After I got paid.”

“That’s not enough to replace it.”

“I would have figured it out.”

“For Stephanie?”

He nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Emma wanted to meet me as her father.”

I felt suddenly exhausted.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Simply exhausted.

“And you paid Stephanie twenty-five hundred dollars for that?”

“It wasn’t payment for access.”

“Then what was it?”

“Help.”

“With what?”

“The move.”

“The ten-thousand-dollar move?”

“Yes.”

“So this was the first installment.”

He looked down.

I understood what that meant.

He had intended to find the rest somewhere.

Our savings.

Our business.

My bonus.

Wherever he could.

I turned toward the stairs.

“Sleep downstairs.”

“Josie.”

“I mean it.”

He did not follow me.

Upstairs, I locked the bedroom door for the first time since we bought the house.

I placed the checkbook on the dresser and photographed every page again.

Then I changed the password to my personal bank account.

After that, I changed the password to my email.

Then my investment account.

Then the payroll portal where my bonus had been deposited.

At 1:47 a.m., I was still awake.

I opened the photographs of the checks and enlarged the most recent one.

Stephanie Radek.

$2,500.

Cal’s handwriting.

I noticed something I had missed downstairs.

At the bottom of the check image was a partial account number.

It was not the number of the personal checking account I had just secured.

I opened my banking app.

I compared the digits.

Different.

For several seconds, I stared at the screen.

Then I remembered an old savings account I had stopped using regularly after we bought the house.

Cal had emergency access to that one too.

I logged in.

The balance was lower than it should have been.

Much lower.

I downloaded four years of statements.

One by one, I searched for transfers and checks.

Five hundred.

Eight hundred.

One thousand.

Twenty-five hundred.

There were others.

Smaller amounts.

A few transfers routed through accounts I did not recognize.

I added them.

Then added them again.

The total was more than eleven thousand dollars.

Cal had understated it.

Again.

One recurring destination appeared several times.

The description was abbreviated, but a name was visible.

RADK JOINT.

Joint.

I enlarged the transaction.

There was an account reference.

Cal had not merely been sending Stephanie money.

He had been moving my money into an account he shared with her.

I sat in bed with the laptop warming my knees.

Then my phone vibrated.

2:13 a.m.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

A message appeared.

Josie, this is Stephanie Radek.

My hands went cold.

A second message arrived before I could answer.

Cal doesn’t know I’m contacting you.

Then another.

I think you’ve discovered some of the money.

I read it twice.

The typing indicator appeared again.

This time, the message was longer.

But the first sentence was enough to make me sit upright.

You deserve to know that Emma is not the only thing your husband has been hiding from you.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Stephanie’s Message Told Me the Secret Account Was Only One Piece of a
