secrets.

Cal was trying to complete a new deal.

I called Lena again.

“This is about a property purchase.”

I sent the filing.

She opened it while we were on the phone.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Closing date is Friday.”

“Yes.”

“Your husband may be trying to assemble the equity requirement.”

“With our business money.”

“Possibly.”

“And my bonus.”

“Possibly.”

“And money routed through Northline.”

“Possibly.”

I hated the careful language.

But I understood why she used it.

“We need proof.”

“Yes.”

Then she added:

“Josie, look at the lender.”

I enlarged the filing.

Commercial financing source:

Holt Capital Partners.

I stared at the name.

Dennis Holt.

The former banker whose name appeared on the secret account, the forged authorization, Northline’s registration, the property company, and now the warehouse deal.

The same man had been standing behind nearly every hidden financial arrangement in my marriage.

I asked Lena, “Do you think Dennis is financing them?”

“It appears so.”

“Then why do they need my business line?”

“Maybe to satisfy the down-payment requirement.”

“Which means they don’t actually have the cash.”

“Possibly.”

I leaned back.

“If I stop the money, the deal fails.”

“Maybe.”

That explained the panic.

Not Emma.

Not the roof.

Not even exposure.

The family stood to lose a property deal scheduled to close within days.

I looked at Diane’s voicemail transcript.

Please don’t make financial decisions until we can talk as a family.

Now I knew why.

I sent Lena one final question.

“Should I talk to them?”

“Not tonight.”

I nodded though she could not see me.

“Tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow, after we secure what we can.”

After the call, I sat in silence.

My phone buzzed one more time.

Cal.

This message was different.

Please don’t destroy this deal because you’re angry with me.

I read it slowly.

Then another message arrived.

If Friday falls apart, Dad and Marcus lose everything they put in.

There it was.

Confirmation.

I typed nothing.

Cal sent one final message.

We can fix our marriage after this closes.

I stared at the sentence until the screen dimmed.

After this closes.

After my money moved.

After his family’s investment was safe.

After the warehouse belonged to them.

Then, apparently, our marriage could receive attention.

I took a screenshot.

Saved it.

Forwarded it to Lena.

And for the first time since Christmas dinner, I stopped wondering whether I would protect Cal from the consequences of his choices.

The only question left was how much of my life he had already used as collateral.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The
