night.

Not because I feared Brooke would return.

Security remained outside the house, deputies had increased patrols, and every entrance was locked.

I stayed awake because the foundation of my life had changed.

My first renovation had always belonged to me in memory.

The bad roof.

The mold behind the cabinets.

The weekends scraping paint.

The evenings balancing invoices at a folding table.

I had believed I financed the project through discipline, savings, and a bridge investor.

Now I knew twenty-five thousand dollars had come from Brooke.

Without my knowledge.

That did not erase my work.

But it changed the story.

And Brooke knew it would.

At 5:40 in the me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You were short.”

“I had another investor interested.”

“Walter said the terms were she?”

“Twenty-two.”

“She gave you twenty-five thousand dollars at twenty-two?”

“She didn’t want to.”

That another investor.

Accepted worse terms.

Delayed the purchase.

Anything rather than unknowingly take my younger sister’s inheritance.

“So Brooke helped me when I didn’t ask.”

“Yes.”

“You stopped her from telling me.”

“Yes.”

“And then when she resented me for it, you kept that seriously?”

Dad did not answer.

Because it was Brooke.

Because she was emotional.

Because everyone assumed threats were only feelings until they became
