grateful.

At nine that night, Megan and I sat in my kitchen eating takeout we barely touched.

“You know what scares me?” she said.

“What?”

“Brooke may genuinely believe you stole her life.”

I put down my fork.

“She got her money back.”

“That may not matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“I know.”

Megan leaned forward.

“But imagine Martin telling her for years that every house you sold, every development you built, every award you got should have been partly hers.”

“That doesn’t make it true.”

“No.”

“But it might explain her.”

I hated that she was right.

Brooke had spent most of her life being treated as fragile.

Then for one crucial moment, Dad asked her to sacrifice for me.

She gave him twenty-five thousand dollars.

I succeeded spectacularly.

Nobody told me she helped.

Nobody publicly credited her.

Dad repaid the money secretly.

Martin told her she was entitled to more.

Resentment became arithmetic.

Arithmetic became fraud.

The next morning, Mercer called before seven.

“We found Evan Pierce.”

“Where?”

“Charlotte.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

The fact that I had asked told me how far my mind had traveled.

“Did he talk?”

“He has counsel.”

“Did he admit involvement?”

“I can’t discuss everything yet.”

“Mercer.”

He sighed.

“He says Brooke was not the person directing him.”

I stood.

“Martin?”

“No.”

A colder feeling moved through me.

“Then who?”

“He claims he took instructions from someone using an intermediary.”

“What intermediary?”

“We’re trying to verify that.”

“Who does he say was behind it?”

Mercer paused long enough that I knew I would dislike the answer.

“Your father.”

For several seconds I could not speak.

“That’s impossible.”

“Evan says he received documents carrying your father’s authorization.”

“My father doesn’t work for Holt Ridge.”

“We know.”

“He doesn’t have authority.”

“We know.”

“Then why would Evan listen to him?”

“Because the documents claimed your father represented your interests through Blue Ridge.”

I thought of the forged authorization.

Mom’s signature.

Family representative.

Dad’s hidden agreements.

Martin’s structure.

Someone had built a paper trail that made my parents look like authorized intermediaries.

Whether they understood it or not.

“Does Evan believe Dad was involved?”

“He says he did.”

“And now?”

“Now he’s less certain.”

I sat down.

“Why?”

“Because we showed him the forged documents.”

My heart pounded.

“What did he say?”

“That he never met your father.”

I closed my eyes.

Someone had used Dad’s identity too.

Brooke had not merely stolen from the family.

She had turned us into characters inside a financial fiction.

And every one of us had unknowingly supplied a piece of the disguise.
