I need to tell you something about the money Grandma left us.

The letter stopped there.

No second page.

The next was dated months later.

You probably think I’m being dramatic again. I messed something up and I don’t know how to fix it. There’s a man helping me but I think he’s lying.

My chest tightened.

Daniel.

The third letter:

I tried to tell Mom. I said yes. I want you to know I said yes even though I’m scared I won’t have anything left.

I closed my eyes.

That letter hurt more than the forged documents.

Not because it excused what followed.

Because this version of Brooke still existed before everything hardened.

Twenty-two.

Ashamed.

Scared.

Wanting me to know she had helped.

Dad looked at the floor.

“I never saw those.”

“Neither did I.”

The fifth letter was different.

Angrier.

You sold the house and nobody told me anything. conversations.”

“Yes.”

“And every time we did, we made the next problem bigger.”

“Yes.”

Mom whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I believed her.

That was not the same as being ready to forgive everything.

Mercer photographed the letters.

Then something on the final envelope caught his attention.

A handwritten telephone number.

“Recognize this?”

I shook my head.

He searched it.

Disconnected.

Then he searched historical records.

The number had once belonged to an office.

Cross Financial Recovery Services.

Daniel.

The address was in Asheville.

The business had closed seven years earlier.

Mercer requested old lease records.

The landlord remembered Daniel.

More importantly, he remembered where Daniel moved.

Not the official forwarding address.

A property Daniel had personally mentioned.

A workshop outside Black Mountain.

The refuge.

Police moved quickly.

The property was hidden behind trees at the end of a gravel road.

By the time officers arrived, Daniel was gone.

Again.

But he had left in a hurry.

Food in the refrigerator.

Clothes.

A laptop charger without the laptop.

A cup on the desk.

And documents.

Lots of them.

One wall held photographs.

Clients.

Properties.

Businesses.

My family.

My house.

Holt Ridge.

Brooke.

Dad.

Mom.

Even Megan.

When Mercer showed me the photographs, anger displaced fear.

“How long has he been watching us?”

“Some images are several years old.”

“Why Megan?”

“Association.”

“She has nothing to do with the finances.”

“He appears to document relationships.”

“For leverage?”

“Probably.”

There were handwritten notes beneath some photographs.

Robert — avoids confrontation.

Elaine — signs when reassured.

Brooke — resentment / financial insecurity.

Miranda — pride / independence / reputation sensitivity.

I stared at mine.

He had built his strategy around a psychological profile.

Mostly wrong.

Partly right.

I did value independence.

I did protect Holt Ridge’s reputation.

I had been proud enough not to tell my parents how much their neglect hurt.

Daniel had mistaken those traits for predictable weaknesses.

Then I noticed another note.

Miranda — family guilt ineffective?

A question mark.

I almost smiled.

He had discovered the problem.

Guilt worked beautifully on my parents.

It worked on Brooke.

It had worked on me for years too.

But not anymore.

“What else?”

Mercer showed me photographs of documents recovered from the workshop.

Insurance forms.

Corporate records.

Lists of accounts.

Then one page caught my attention.

A timeline.

Not financial.

Personal.

My birthdays.

Brooke’s birthdays.

Family holidays.

My parents’ anniversary.

Major Holt Ridge events.

At the bottom:

Christmas — convergence opportunity.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked closer.

Beside Christmas was another note.

Family rupture increases settlement probability.

My skin went cold.

The cancellation.

The television special.

Brooke needing groceries.

Had Daniel manipulated that too?

I called Brooke through Mercer.

“Why did you need Mom and Dad on Christmas?”

She sounded confused.

“What?”

“The groceries. The rent. Why then?”

“I was broke.”

“That doesn’t answer why Christmas.”

Silence.

“Brooke.”

“Daniel told me I needed to talk to them before the bank situation got worse.”

“About what?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“The forty-eight thousand.”

“Why that amount?”

“He calculated it.”

My pulse quickened.

“For what?”

“To cover the apartment building until January.”

“So Daniel told you to ask Mom and Dad for forty-eight thousand right before Christmas.”

“Yes.”

“And you told them not to come to my house.”

Brooke’s voice changed.

“I didn’t know about the television special until later.”

“You told them I was going away.”

“Because Daniel said you would probably be traveling.”

“How would he know?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at Mercer.

The cancellation may not have been random.

Daniel knew my parents’ habits.

He knew Brooke could create a crisis.

He knew they would choose her.

He knew I would probably say all good.

Family rupture increases settlement probability.

“He wanted us divided before January first,” I said.

Mercer nodded.

“If that interpretation is correct.”

“It is.”

Daniel had expected the fraudulent lien to surface.

If my parents were already aligned with Brooke, and if Brooke believed I owed her, then I would face the claim alone.

Maybe Dad would pressure me to settle.

Maybe Mom would beg me not to destroy the family.

Maybe Brooke would insist the money was hers.

Daniel understood our old pattern perfectly.

He just had not anticipated the television special.

That accidental broadcast had exposed the gap between what my parents believed and what my life actually was.

The Christmas cancellation was supposed to isolate me.

Instead, it broke the story open.

Mercer’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

“They found Daniel’s vehicle.”

“Where?”

“Near your property.”

My stomach tightened.

“How near?”

“About three miles.”

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“Then where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

I immediately called had entered.

Then Megan called from Holt Ridge.

“Miranda.”

Her voice was wrong.

“What happened?”

“There’s a man in your walked into my office, sat in my chair, and waited.

No weapon.

No hostage.

No attempt to run.

When officers arrested him, he asked for one thing.

A meeting
