apart.”

My pulse hammered.

“Why?”

“He didn't explain.”

“That's impossible.”

“I begged him to.”

“What exactly did he say?”

My mother's eyes filled.

“He said if Evan ever meets Claire, don't let him marry her.”

Claire heard every word.

A small sound escaped her.

I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.

“No.”

“Evan—”

“No. You don't get to Daniel.”

She whispered, “Yes.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

Claire spoke.

“Evan?”

I forced myself to answer.

“I'm here.”

“My mom is coming back.”

Marlene's voice became audible.

Then Claire said, “She found hospital papers.”

“What hospital papers?”

“Mine.”

My mother rose again.

Claire's voice shook as she read.

“There are two birth certificates.”

My chest tightened.

“Two?”

“One lists Daniel Bennett.”

I waited.

“And the other?”

Claire began crying harder.

“Michael Carter.”

My father's name.

The room lost all sense of proportion.

My mother went white.

“No,” I said.

“Evan—”

“No.”

Claire tried to speak.

I couldn't hear her over the blood pounding in my ears.

If Michael Carter was Claire's biological father, then Claire was my half-sister.

And Luca—

I looked toward the bassinet.

The thought was unbearable.

“Mom,” I said, “tell me that isn't true.”

“I can't.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean you can't?”

“I never knew what happened.”

“You knew Dad might have another daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you watched me marry her?”

“I didn't know!”

Her voice cracked.

“I met Claire years after Michael died. She had Marlene and Daniel. She had a normal family history. Daniel introduced her as his daughter. There was no reason for me to believe—”

“Except her name.”

“Yes.”

“Her father.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad's warning.”

My mother covered her face.

“I convinced myself it was coincidence.”

I turned away.

For perhaps the first time in my life, I understood that adults could destroy other people's lives not only by acting, but by deciding that a frightening truth was easier left untouched.

Claire spoke again.

“Marlene says the second certificate may not be legitimate.”

I returned to the phone.

“What?”

“She says someone altered the records.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

My mother whispered, “Michael.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Your father had connections at the county records office.”

Claire heard.

“Why would he change my birth certificate?”

My mother shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Stop saying that!”

Luca woke at the sound of my voice.

His cry cut through the room.

Instantly I regretted shouting.

I picked him up.

His body was warm against my chest.

I looked at his tiny face while my entire understanding of our family threatened to collapse.

“I'm sorry,” I whispered.

Claire heard me.

“Is Luca okay?”

“He's fine.”

That was all that mattered for several seconds.

Then Marlene finally took Claire's phone.

“Evan?”

Her voice was controlled but strained.

“Marlene, tell me what happened.”

“I can't tell you everything because I don't know everything.”

I almost laughed at the phrase.

Apparently ignorance was our family's inheritance.

“But I can tell you Rebecca was Claire's biological mother.”

“And Daniel?”

“He raised her.”

“Is he her biological father?”

Marlene hesitated.

“We believed so.”

“Believed?”

“Rebecca had an affair.”

“With my father.”

“Yes.”

My mother began crying quietly.

Marlene continued.

“Rebecca and Michael were involved around the time Claire was conceived.”

My knees weakened.

I sat while holding Luca.

“Did they do a paternity test?”

“Eventually.”

“What did it say?”

“I never saw the original.”

“Why?”

“Because by then everything had become a disaster.”

She explained only fragments.

Rebecca had been married to Daniel.

Michael believed Claire might be his.

Daniel believed Claire was his.

The adults fought over what should be written on legal documents and who had the right to know what.

At some point records were changed.

Years later, Rebecca died.

The secrets remained.

“Where is Daniel?” I asked.

“Marlene is trying to reach him,” Claire said after taking the phone again.

“Does he know?”

“I think he knows more than anyone.”

My mother nodded.

“He does.”

I turned sharply.

“You said that like you're certain.”

“Because Michael spoke to him.”

“When?”

“Before your father died.”

I stared at her.

“What did they discuss?”

“The girl.”

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

My mother's silence answered.

“Mom.”

She wiped her cheek.

“Michael made Daniel promise that if there was ever a possibility you and Claire met, Daniel would tell you the truth before things became serious.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Daniel knew who I was when Claire introduced me.”

“Yes.”

“And he said nothing.”

“Yes.”

Claire heard.

Her voice went flat.

“My father knew?”

“Apparently.”

She stopped crying.

That frightened me.

“Claire?”

Nothing.

“Claire, talk to me.”

“I need a minute.”

The call ended.

I immediately tried again.

She didn't answer.

I stood holding Luca while my mother watched me.

“What exactly was Dad afraid of?”

She reached into her handbag again.

“There is more.”

She removed another photograph.

This one showed a hospital room.

Rebecca lay in bed holding a newborn.

Daniel stood beside her.

And behind the glass in the background stood my father.

I checked the handwritten date.

March 14, 1995.

Claire's birthday.

“He was there.”

Mom nodded.

“Rebecca called him when she went into labor.”

“Why?”

“She believed he might be the father.”

I sat down again.

“What happened afterward?”

“Daniel signed the original certificate.”

“Because he thought Claire was his?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does another certificate list Dad?”

My mother looked toward Luca.

“Three months after the birth, Rebecca told Michael that Daniel was probably Claire's biological father.”

“Probably?”

“She had been with both of them close together.”

I felt sick.

“So nobody knew.”

“Not then.”

“What did Dad do?”

“He demanded certainty.”

“Did he get it?”

“Eventually.”

The word hung between us.

Before I could ask more, Claire called again.

I answered.

Her voice sounded distant.

“Mom found a letter.”

“From Dad?”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

“Me.”

I closed my eyes.

“What does the envelope say?”

Paper moved near the phone.

Claire read her own full name.

Then her birth date.

My mother began shaking her head.

“No.”

“What?” I demanded.

She stood.

“Tell her not to open it.”

“Why?”

“Because I know that letter.”

Claire heard her.

“What does she know?”

“Mom?”

My mother looked trapped.

“Michael wrote several letters before he died.”

“To Claire?”

“One to Claire. One to Daniel.
