not call Claire.

Could not check on Luca.

For the first time since this began, I felt the old urge to act alone.

Then I remembered the lesson.

I asked for the interview to stop.

Ortiz entered.

I told her everything.

No secret meeting.

No private deal.

No attempt to outsmart everyone.

Just information passed to the people equipped to verify it.

Vale watched me.

“You really are nothing like Michael.”

I looked at him.

“I hope I'm like him in some ways.”

That seemed to surprise him.

“He was my father.”

Vale's face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

I stood.

The interview ended.

Outside, Claire waited.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

I smiled faintly.

Then Ortiz emerged.

She held a printed photograph.

“We identified the driver of the sedan.”

“Gregory Mills?”

“No.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She turned the photograph toward us.

The image showed Sloan in the passenger seat.

The driver looked directly toward the gas-station camera.

White hair.

Bent shoulders.

A scar across one hand.

Charles Renner.

Claire stared.

“Vale was telling the truth.”

“About this part,” Ortiz said.

Only this part.

That distinction mattered.

My stomach tightened.

“Where is Charles?”

Ortiz's expression told me before she answered.

“Gone.”

“And Adam?”

“Still secured.”

“Did Charles take the red ledger?”

“We don't know.”

Then Claire's phone rang.

Natalie.

She answered.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?”

I moved closer.

Natalie's voice was audible.

“There was something in Luca's diaper bag.”

Claire went white.

“What?”

“A red notebook.”

Every person in the hallway froze.

“When did you find it?”

“Just now.”

“Don't touch it.”

“I already did.”

Ortiz reached for her phone.

“Tell her to put it down.”

Claire did.

I stared at her.

The red ledger.

Somebody had placed it beside our son's bottles and diapers.

Not to steal it.

To make sure we found it.

Claire whispered, “Charles.”

Maybe.

But for the first time, I refused to turn possibility into truth.

“We'll find out.”

Ortiz dispatched officers.

Twenty minutes later, photographs arrived.

The notebook was old.

Red leather.

No title.

Inside were names, shell companies, dates and percentages.

The final pages concerned Mercer.

Then one page concerned me.

EVAN CARTER.

Beside my name:

BENEFICIAL OWNER — HARROW LAND TRUST — 51%.

I stared.

Not Mercer.

Harrow.

I owned controlling interest in the land beneath Sloan's archive too.

“How?” I asked.

My mother looked devastated.

“Michael.”

Ortiz turned the page.

Another entry.

CLAIRE BENNETT — CONTINGENT SUCCESSOR.

Claire and I stared at each other.

The inheritance web had not accidentally joined us.

Someone had deliberately connected us.

Then Ortiz reached the last written page.

One sentence.

IF EVAN AND CLAIRE ACT TOGETHER, ALL TRUST ASSETS TRANSFER TO THEM AND THE ARCHIVE BECOMES THEIR PROPERTY.

Below it was Michael Carter's signature.

Rebecca Bennett's signature.

And a third.

Charles Renner.

Claire whispered, “They planned this.”

Years before our marriage.

Years before we knew each other.

Not our relationship.

The structure.

A final safeguard requiring the children of two compromised families to agree before anyone could control the evidence.

Then Ortiz turned the final page.

A handwritten note had been added recently.

I recognized Charles's handwriting from older samples.

It said:

Michael believed your generation might do what ours could not.

Tell the truth without trying to own it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Charles Left the Red Ledger Beside Our Son, but His Final Safeguard Forced Us
