Adam had passed the building dozens of times and never imagined that actual people lived there. The lobby smelled faintly of cedar and expensive flowers. A concierge greeted him by name before Adam introduced himself.

“Ms. Sterling has authorized your access, Mr. Bennett.”

That was the first moment the arrangement felt frighteningly real.

The private elevator opened directly into Luna’s home.

Adam stepped out carrying his suitcase and stopped.

The place was enormous without being showy. Pale stone floors, dark wood, long windows facing the mountains, artwork that looked chosen rather than purchased in matching sets. The city unfolded beneath the glass in every direction. Yet for all its beauty, the penthouse felt almost unoccupied. No shoes by the door. No mail piled on a counter. No half-read book left open. Nothing accidental.

Luna appeared from a hallway wearing black trousers and a gray sweater. Seeing her without a blazer was strangely disorienting.

“You’re late.”

Adam checked his phone. “By four minutes.”

“You said seven.”

“I had to hand my keys to the landlord.”

She glanced at the single suitcase. “That is everything?”

“Some of us don’t have a furniture acquisition strategy.”

Her mouth tightened. There was an attached bathroom, a desk, a wall of empty closets, and a bed covered in white linen.

Adam set down his suitcase.

“This room has a better credit score than I do.”

“It probably does.”

He looked at her.

“That was a joke,” Luna said.

“I know. The legal ceremony took place in a private municipal room with Luna’s attorney, her assistant, and one elderly clerk who seemed bored by rich people’s secrets.

Adam wore the new suit.

It fit perfectly.

Luna wore a simple ivory dress beneath a dark coat, no veil, no elaborate jewelry. The restraint made the situation feel more intimate than spectacle would have.

They stood before the clerk.

Adam had expected the words to feel theatrical. Instead, when he was asked whether he accepted Luna as his lawful wife, his throat tightened.

“I do.”

Luna’s answer came an instant later.

“I do.”

They exchanged plain rings selected the previous afternoon.

The clerk signed the license.

Just like that, Adam Bennett became Luna Sterling’s husband.

Outside the building, snow began to fall in dry white flakes.

Luna’s assistant took several photographs for the announcement.
