Derek had apparently raised concerns immediately after the marriage announcement. Under the trust, Eleanor possessed authority to review suspicious circumstances and determine whether Luna had entered a qualifying marriage in good faith. The contract did not explicitly require romantic love, but an arrangement created solely to manipulate the trust could trigger litigation.

“So we need to look like we dated naturally,” Adam said.

“Yes.”

“But not too perfectly.”

Luna looked at him.

“Real couples disagree about dates. They remember different details. If we recite a timeline like witnesses in a trial, Derek will smell blood.”

She considered this.

“You’re good at lying.”

“I work in advertising.”

“That explains several things.”

Adam smiled.

They constructed only the facts they needed. The Hartwell campaign had forced late nights. Adam and Luna had occasionally been in the same meetings. They could plausibly claim conversation had continued afterward. Their first private dinner became May ninth at a quiet restaurant that had since closed. Their relationship remained hidden because Luna feared accusations of favoritism. Adam supposedly resisted publicity because his father was ill.

That last detail troubled him.

“I don’t like using Dad.”

“We can remove it.”

“It also happens to be believable.”

“Believable is not sufficient if it crosses a line.”

Adam looked up.

Luna seemed genuinely willing to discard the strongest part of their story because he disliked it.

He nodded once. “Keep it.”

At six, a car took them to the Sterling family estate outside the city.

Adam had expected wealth. He had not expected history.

The stone house sat behind iron gates among old trees dusted with snow. Warm light filled tall windows. Luna became quieter the closer they came.

“You grew up here?”

“Partly.”

“What does partly mean?”

“My father worked constantly. My mother traveled constantly. Derek and I were often here with staff.”

“Happy childhood?”

She looked out the window. “Efficient.”

Adam understood enough not to ask again.

Derek greeted them at the door.

He was taller than Adam expected, handsome in the deliberate way of someone who knew mirrors were allies. He wore a navy jacket with no tie and smiled broadly when Luna entered.

“Newlyweds.”

Luna gave him the briefest possible embrace.

Derek turned to Adam and extended his hand.

“So you’re the surprise.”

Adam shook it. “I’ve been called worse.”

“I’m sure.”

The smile remained, but Derek’s grip tightened slightly before releasing.

Eleanor Sterling waited in the drawing room. She was in her late sixties, silver-haired, elegant, and far less icy than Adam expected. She kissed Luna’s cheek, then took Adam’s hands in both of hers.

“So this is the man who managed what the rest of Denver apparently could not.”

Adam glanced at Luna. “I didn’t realize there had been a competition.”

Eleanor laughed.

Luna did not.

Dinner began pleasantly enough. The table was smaller than Adam expected, set for six. Derek’s wife, Camille, was polite but distant. Eleanor asked about Adam’s childhood, career, and mother. Luna’s answers occasionally overlapped his, which helped more than the rehearsed details.

Then Derek started.

“So, Adam. When did you first realize you were in love with my sister?”

Luna’s fork paused.

Adam swallowed a bite of food and considered.

“We didn’t have a single moment.”

Derek smiled. “No?”

“No. If you mean when did I realize I was in trouble, that’s easier.”

Eleanor leaned forward with interest. “And when was that?”

Adam looked at Luna.

He had planned to mention the fictional May dinner.

Instead, another memory surfaced: standing outside a conference room months earlier after a client presentation, watching Luna quietly defend a junior designer whose mistake had nearly cost the account. She had taken responsibility in the meeting even though Adam knew the error was not hers.

“There was a presentation last spring,” he said. “A junior designer made a mistake. A bad one. The client wanted somebody blamed.”

Luna’s eyes narrowed slightly. She remembered.

“You could have sacrificed him,” Adam continued. “Nobody would have questioned it. You didn’t. You took the hit yourself.”

Derek leaned back. “That made you fall in love?”

“No. It made me realize she wasn’t the person everyone around the office thought she was.”

For the first time all evening, Luna looked uncertain.

Adam continued because stopping would seem stranger. “After that, I started noticing things.”

“Such as?” Eleanor asked.

“The fact that she knows the security guards’ names. That she remembers whose kids are applying to college. That she pretends she hates office birthday cakes but always takes a piece after everyone leaves.”

A quiet laugh moved around the table.

Luna stared at him.

Those details were real.

Adam had not known he knew so many.

Derek’s expression sharpened. “Interesting. Luna, what did you notice about Adam?”

The question arrived like a blade.

Adam could practically see the contract in her mind. His debt. His background report. His financial desperation.

Luna set down her glass.

“He stays late.”

Derek laughed lightly. “Romantic.”

“He stays late even when nobody important is watching.”

The room quieted.

Luna looked at Adam rather than her brother.

“He rewrites work other people would consider good enough. He gives credit away more easily than he takes it. He sends money home every month.”

Adam’s throat tightened.

She continued. “And when his father became ill, he never used it as an excuse for poor work, even when it would have been a perfectly legitimate reason.”

Adam looked down.

Derek watched both of them.

Eleanor’s expression softened.

For several minutes, conversation moved elsewhere. Adam allowed himself to breathe.

Then Derek reached for the wine.

“So where was the first kiss?”

Luna answered too quickly.

“Outside my building.”

Adam spoke at the same time.

“In her car.”

Silence.

Derek slowly placed the bottle down.

Camille lowered her eyes to her plate.

Eleanor looked between them.

Adam forced a laugh. “This is exactly why couples should not be interrogated separately.”

Derek smiled. “Which was it?”

Luna’s foot touched Adam’s beneath the table. Whether warning or panic, he could not tell.

“The car was outside her building,” Adam said.

“Convenient.”

“It was raining.”

Luna added, “He refused to get out.”

Adam turned toward her. “Because you kept talking.”

“That is not how I remember it.”

Derek’s eyes moved between them with predatory patience.

Eleanor smiled faintly. “That sounds more convincing than the polished version.”

The tension eased, but only slightly.

After dinner, Adam stepped onto the rear terrace for air. Snow had stopped. Cold sharpened the smell of pine and stone.

The door opened behind him.

Derek joined him carrying two glasses of whiskey.

“One for courage?” he asked.

“I’m fine.”

Derek set both glasses on the stone railing.

“My sister is very good at strategy.”

Adam said nothing.

“She inherited that from our father. Emotion was never her strongest subject.”

“You invited me outside to insult her?”

“I invited you outside to warn you.”

“About what?”

Derek looked back through the glass doors. Luna stood beside Eleanor near the fireplace.

“You think you are special because she married you.”

Adam almost laughed.

Derek continued. “Whatever story she sold you, understand something. Luna does nothing without a reason.”

“I work for her. I noticed.”

“She uses people. Our father taught both of us how.”

Adam’s jaw tightened.

Derek leaned closer.

“If she promised you something, make sure you collect before she no longer needs you.”

Adam met his eyes.

“That almost sounded like concern.”

“It is curiosity.”

“About?”

“How much she paid.”

The words landed quietly.

Adam did not move.

Derek smiled.

There it was. Not proof. Suspicion.

Adam picked up one of the whiskey glasses and handed it back.

“You should work on your family hospitality.”

He turned toward the house.

Derek spoke behind him.

“I know about the debts.”

Adam stopped.

Every muscle in his back tightened.

Slowly, he turned.

Derek no longer smiled.

“I know your father left medical bills,” he said. “I know you were behind on rent. I know your mother’s mortgage suddenly became current yesterday.”

The cold seemed to disappear from Adam’s skin.

“How?”

“That is not the question you should be asking.”

Derek lifted his glass.

“The question is what Eleanor will think when I show her.”

Adam crossed the distance between them before stopping himself.

“You don’t have anything.”

“I have enough to start looking.”

The terrace door opened.

Luna appeared.

She looked from Adam to Derek and immediately understood something had happened.

“Adam?”

Derek walked past her into the house.

“Lovely dinner, brother-in-law.”

Luna waited until the door closed.

“What did he say?”

Adam’s pulse was still hammering.

“He knows about my debts.”

Her face changed.

“He knows my mother’s mortgage was paid.”

Luna went completely still.

“That information was handled through outside counsel.”

“Well, somebody talked.”

She looked toward the house.

Adam saw calculation move behind her eyes, then something else.

Fear.

“We need to leave,” she said.

They said hurried goodbyes and returned to the car. Neither spoke until the estate gates disappeared behind them.

Then Luna took out her phone.

Adam caught her wrist.

“No.”

She looked at his hand, then at him.

“No what?”

“No calling lawyers before you tell me what this means.”

Her voice sharpened. “It means Derek has information he should not have.”

“And if he gives it to Eleanor?”

“The marriage could be challenged.”

“So the payments disappear?”

“That is what you’re worried about?”

Adam released her wrist.

“Yes, Luna. The money matters. That was the deal.”

She looked away.

The silence that followed felt different from every silence they had shared before.

Adam regretted his words, but not enough to take them back.

Finally Luna said, “The medical debt has already been paid. Your mother’s arrears have already been cleared. I will not reverse those payments even if this arrangement collapses.”

Adam turned toward her.

“That isn’t what the contract says.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

She looked out at the dark road beyond the window.

“Because your mother should not lose her home because my brother is cruel.”

For a moment, Adam had no reply.

Then Luna’s phone lit up.

A message from Eleanor.

Luna read it once.

Her face drained of color.

“What?”

She handed the phone to Adam.

The message contained only two sentences.

Derek has raised serious concerns regarding the financial circumstances surrounding your marriage.
