26 – The Court Returned Michael Reeves’s Name to Sterling, While Derek Made the First Unselfish Decision Luna Had Ever Seen Him Make

The settlement hearing filled three courtrooms.

Reporters occupied one.

Lawyers filled another.

The actual parties crowded into the largest room under rules stricter than any corporate meeting Adam had attended.

No phones.

No whispered strategy.

No leaving once testimony began without permission.

Luna sat between Sarah Holt and independent counsel.

Rebecca sat across the aisle.

Derek occupied the row behind Luna.

Adam sat beside him.

Derek looked offended by the arrangement.

“Why am I next to you?”

“Judicial punishment.”

“I believe it.”

Catherine and Eleanor sat farther back.

Carol Bennett had flown in from Texas the evening before.

Adam had tried to keep her away from the circus.

She refused.

“I spent thirty years not knowing why your father woke up some nights and checked the doors twice,” she told him. “I’m not missing the ending.”

So she sat behind Adam wearing the dark blue dress she had bought for his father’s funeral.

Not because she was mourning.

Because Daniel should have been there.

The judge entered.

Everyone rose.

For the next four hours, lawyers reconstructed twenty-eight years of theft, concealment, succession, and fabricated ownership.

Michael Reeves’s original shares had never lawfully transferred to Victor Sterling.

The escrow documentation remained valid.

Victor’s later corporate consolidations complicated the exact number of successor shares, but expert witnesses agreed the Reeves estate retained a substantial equitable claim.

Then Luna’s parentage changed the analysis.

As Michael’s biological daughter, she was not merely an heir through Victor’s adoption.

She was a Reeves heir in her own right.

Rebecca watched her from across the aisle.

No rivalry.

No visible calculation.

That mattered.

When the judge asked whether the sisters disputed each other’s entitlement, Sarah answered:

“No, Your Honor.”

The judge looked surprised.

“None?”

“None.”

Rebecca stood when invited.

“My sister and I are not contesting each other.”

The word sister echoed strangely in the formal courtroom.

Luna looked down.

Adam saw her smile.

Small.

Private.

The judge turned toward Luna.

“Ms. Sterling?”

Luna stood.

“I agree.”

“Do you seek to preserve the trust holdings previously attributed to Victor Sterling’s estate?”

“No.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“No?”

“No, Your Honor.”

Her lawyer shifted slightly but did not interrupt.

Luna continued.

“If those assets derive from ownership my father—Victor Sterling—did not legally possess, I do not want to preserve them through a technicality.”

The judge studied her.

“That position may cost you significantly.”

“I understand.”

Derek leaned toward Adam.

“She always hated technicalities unless she was using them.”

Adam whispered, “Growth.”

Derek almost smiled.

Then the judge addressed him.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Derek stood.

Adam expected resistance.

Every document, every fight, every year of sibling competition suggested resistance.

The judge asked whether Derek contested the proposed redistribution.

Derek looked toward Victor’s former attorneys.

Then Rebecca.

Then Luna.

“No.”

Luna turned.

Derek continued.

“I reserve rights regarding valuation and unrelated trust assets.”

The judge nodded.

“But not the Reeves ownership?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Derek inhaled.

“Because it was never ours.”

Silence.

Luna stared at him.

Derek sat.

Adam whispered, “That looked painful.”

Derek whispered back, “I may require hospitalization.”

The legal complexity continued.

Insurance.

Tax effects.

Historic investors.

Restitution funds.

Minority-shareholder treatment.

The judge approved the framework provisionally subject to final calculations.

Then Sarah introduced the governance agreement.

Independent directors would hold majority control.

Rebecca would receive a board seat through the Reeves foundation.

Luna would retain an executive seat.

Derek could keep a board seat if elected by non-family shareholders rather than inheriting it.

He read that clause.

Adam watched.

Derek leaned toward Luna.

“Did you write this?”

“No.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

“Who hates me?”

“Democracy.”

He sighed.

The judge approved the framework.

Michael Reeves was legally recognized as co-founder and wrongfully deprived owner.

The family trusts would unwind.

Victor’s disputed assets would fund restitution.

Sterling would survive as a restructured company.

The marriage condition disappeared.

Just like that.

Adam felt nothing dramatic.

No thunder.

No sudden freedom.

He simply looked toward Luna.

She looked back.

A legal structure that had put them together no longer mattered.

Neither moved away.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited behind barriers.

Rebecca walked out first with Sarah.

Questions exploded.

“Ms. Reeves, do you intend to take control?”

“Will you sue Sterling?”

“Do you blame Luna Sterling?”

Rebecca stopped.

Sarah whispered something.

Rebecca stepped toward the microphones.

“I do not intend to control Sterling.”

The shouting quieted slightly.

“My father wanted accountability. We now have a process for it.”

A reporter shouted, “What about Luna?”

Rebecca looked toward the courthouse doors.

“My sister is not responsible for being stolen as a child.”

The sentence hit Luna visibly.

Adam touched her back.

Rebecca continued.

“She is also not responsible for Victor Sterling’s crimes.”

Another reporter asked whether Rebecca trusted her.

Rebecca answered.

“I’m learning to.”

Then she walked away.

Luna stepped outside next.

Questions turned savage.

“Was your marriage fraud?”

“Did you pay your husband to preserve stolen shares?”

“Are you still married now that the trust is gone?”

Luna stopped.

Adam felt her tense.

He expected her to ignore them.

Instead, she turned.

“The trust condition no longer exists.”

Reporters leaned forward.

“My marriage does.”

Someone shouted, “So Adam is staying?”

Luna looked toward him.

Adam wished the pavement would open.

Then she said:

“You would have to ask my husband.”

Every microphone turned.

Adam stared at her.

She looked almost amused.

He stepped forward reluctantly.

A reporter asked, “Are you staying married to Luna Sterling?”

Adam looked at Luna.

Then at the cameras.

“Yes.”

Questions erupted.

“Why?”

Adam almost said because I love her.

The truth existed.

But some truths deserved to reach the person involved before the press.

So he answered:

“Because I want to.”

Then he took Luna’s hand and walked.

In the car, she looked at him.

“You want to.”

“Yes.”

“That was diplomatic.”

“I work in advertising.”

“Coward.”

“You seem to enjoy that word.”

“Because it keeps being accurate.”

He looked at her.

“I was going to say something else.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Adam smiled.

“No.”

“Adam.”

“You embarrassed me in front of forty cameras.”

“You survived.”

“Now you suffer.”

She narrowed her eyes.

He enjoyed the victory for approximately nine minutes.

Then they reached Sterling headquarters.

Employees filled the lobby.

Adam expected uncertainty.

Instead, someone clapped.

Then another.

The applause spread.

Luna stopped.

She hated applause when directed personally.

Adam knew that now.

She looked ready to retreat.

Then Marcus shouted from near reception.

“DON’T MAKE IT WEIRD, BENNETT.”

The lobby laughed.

Luna laughed too.

The applause continued.

Not for inheritance.

Not for family power.

For survival.

For jobs.

For the company having a future.

Luna raised one hand.

The sound faded.

“This is not finished.”

Someone called, “We know.”

Another voice: “Still employed though?”

Laughter.

Luna smiled.

“Yes.”

More applause.

Adam watched her.

That night, Derek came to the penthouse.

Again.

This time with no archive box.

He carried a garment bag.

Adam opened the door.

“You are becoming a problem.”

Derek entered.

“This will be brief.”

Luna looked up from the sofa.

“What do you want?”

Derek held out the garment bag.

“For you.”

She frowned.

“What is it?”

“Open it.”

Inside was Victor’s old tuxedo.

Luna stared.

“You brought me Dad’s tuxedo?”

“No.”

Derek reached into the pocket.

Pulled out a small velvet box.

Adam felt his pulse change.

Luna opened it.

Inside was their mother’s diamond engagement ring.

Catherine’s.

Luna looked at Derek.

“What are you doing?”

“Mother gave it back to Father years ago.”

“I know.”

“He kept it.”

“Yes.”

Derek looked toward Adam.

“Adam has no decent ring.”

Adam stared.

“I have a ring.”

“A contract ring.”

Luna’s expression changed.

Derek continued.

“If you two are determined to make this embarrassing emotional experiment permanent, use something that belonged to the family before Father turned everything into a transaction.”

The room became silent.

Luna looked at the ring.

Then Derek.

“Why give it to us?”

His usual sarcasm faded.

“Because I don’t want it.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

He sat.

For once, he struggled.

“I thought everything Father owned proved something about which of us mattered more.”

Luna’s face softened.

Derek continued.

“The house.
