Somewhere far below, a truck reversed along the street with three distant electronic beeps. The heating system clicked once and settled.

Beside him, Luna slept with one hand beneath her cheek.

Adam watched her longer than necessary.

Her hair had grown past the severe line it once held at her jaw. She had stopped scheduling trims with the same precision she scheduled board meetings, though she would deny that anything about her appearance had become less organized. Her engagement ring caught a small stripe of gray light from the window.

The plain courthouse wedding band remained beside it.

She had refused to replace it.

Adam liked that.

The first ring represented an agreement neither of them would ever pretend had been something else.

The second represented choice.

Both belonged.

Luna opened one eye.

“You’re staring.”

Adam did not bother pretending otherwise.

“You snore.”

“I do not.”

“You absolutely do.”

She opened the other eye.

“Record it.”

“That feels legally dangerous.”

“Then stop making unsupported allegations.”

Adam smiled.

This was what he had asked for in Texas.

Boring.

It turned out boring required adjustment.

For months, both of them had lived with urgency wound through their bodies. They had become accustomed to waking with problems already waiting. Even after Pike entered custody, Graham began cooperating, and the settlement dismantled Victor’s hidden structures, Adam sometimes woke convinced something had happened.

Luna did too.

He could tell because on certain mornings she reached for her phone before fully opening her eyes.

Today she left it on the nightstand.

Progress.

Adam said, “Coffee?”

Luna closed her eyes again.

“Yes.”

“That was not a request for executive approval.”

“Good.”

He started to get up.

She caught his wrist.

“Five minutes.”

Adam looked at her hand.

Months earlier, that gesture had often meant fear.

Now it simply meant stay.

He lay back down.

Five minutes became twenty.

By the time they reached the kitchen, rain had softened to mist.

Adam started coffee.

Luna opened the refrigerator.

He watched.

“You’re looking for something.”

“Breakfast.”

“That is technically correct.”

She moved containers around.

“What?”

“You still approach the refrigerator as if conducting an audit.”

“I am locating eggs.”

“You moved the yogurt three times.”

“It was obstructing inventory.”

Adam laughed.

She found the eggs.

Cooking remained a disputed skill.

Luna insisted she had improved.

Adam insisted avoiding open flame did not count as culinary development.

They made omelets together.

His folded cleanly.

Hers broke in half.

She stared at it.

Adam said nothing.

She looked at him.

“Say it.”

“It has character.”

“Coward.”

They ate at the kitchen island.

No documents between them.

That alone felt strange enough to notice.

Luna checked the clock.

“It’s Sunday.”

“Yes.”

“No meetings.”

“Yes.”

“No calls until ten.”

“House rule.”

She looked toward her phone.

It remained dark.

“Derek has respected it for four consecutive weeks.”

Adam frowned.

“I’m worried about him.”

Luna laughed.

Derek had surprised everyone after the settlement.

He did not become gentle.

No one expected miracles.

He remained impatient, competitive, and professionally allergic to losing arguments.

But he had stopped treating every disagreement as inheritance warfare.

His board seat now depended on actual shareholder confidence, and the change irritated him into competence.

He attended meetings prepared.

He argued about operations instead of bloodlines.

Once, he even changed his mind publicly after Rebecca proved him wrong about a financing model.

The story circulated through Sterling headquarters for days.

Marcus called it the Second Miracle of Denver.

Rebecca settled into the board with less difficulty than Luna had feared.

She remained involved through the Michael Reeves Foundation and refused an executive position.

“I have watched enough families confuse ownership with vocation,” she had said.

Luna respected that.

The sisters had lunch most Thursdays.

Sometimes Adam joined.

Usually he did not.

They were building something that deserved privacy.

Rachel remained under legal restrictions while the investigations into the unauthorized VSR activation and related offenses continued.

She had not disappeared from Rebecca’s life.

Nor had she suddenly become part of Luna’s.

Their relationship advanced slowly.

A letter.

Then a phone call.

Then one supervised lunch without attorneys.

Luna came home afterward emotionally exhausted and refused to discuss it for two hours.

Then she sat beside Adam and spoke until midnight.

Catherine had learned not to demand forgiveness either.

She attended counseling.

Luna knew because Catherine told her once and then, importantly, did not explain further.

That restraint mattered.

Eleanor moved into a smaller home and began helping independent investigators catalogue the pieces of Sterling history she had spent decades concealing.

When a journalist asked whether she wanted her own reputation rehabilitated, she answered:

“No. I would prefer the record to be accurate.”

Luna framed the article.

Not because Eleanor looked good in it.

Because honesty finally sounded ordinary.

Adam finished breakfast.

Luna watched him.

“What?”

“You’re somewhere else.”

“Thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

He smiled.

“I was thinking how weird everyone got.”

“Everyone was always weird.”

“Fair.”

Her phone buzzed.

Both looked at it.

10:03.

Derek.

Adam pointed.

“Three minutes past regulation.”

Luna answered.

“What?”

Derek’s voice came through.

“Good morning to you too.”

“What do you want?”

“I need both of you at the office.”

Adam leaned closer.

“Sunday the room.

“What happened?” she repeated.

“Nothing bad.”

Adam and Luna exchanged a look.

Derek continued.

“I need you to come see something.”

“What?”

“No.”

Luna stared at the phone.

“No?”

“No explaining by phone.”

“You realize that phrase ruined approximately half a year of our lives.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain.”

Derek sighed.

“It concerns Victor’s office.”

Luna’s face hardened.

“We emptied it.”

“I know.”

“What did you find?”

“Come here.”

He hung up.

Adam stared.

Luna placed the phone down.

“Absolutely not.”

“Agreed.”

They remained seated.

Thirty seconds passed.

Adam stood.

“I’ll get dressed.”

“I hate this family.”

“Technically mine now too.”

“That makes it worse.”

Sterling headquarters on Sunday felt almost unfamiliar.

No assistants.

No elevator traffic.

No phones ringing behind glass walls.

The lobby security guard greeted Adam by name.

Not Mr. Bennett.

Adam.

He still appreciated that.

Derek waited on the executive floor wearing jeans and a sweater.

Adam stopped.

“What happened to your suit?”

Derek looked down.

“It is Sunday.”

“I did not know you had alternate clothing.”

“Can we focus?”

Luna stepped out of the elevator.

“Where?”

Derek led them toward Victor’s former office.

After restructuring, no one had claimed it.

Luna could have.

She refused.

The room was scheduled to become part of an employee collaboration space once renovations began.

Workers had removed the heavy furniture earlier that week.

The enormous desk was gone.

The shelves empty.

Victor’s portrait had moved to the corporate archive beside Michael Reeves’s restored co-founder display.

Only the built-in wall panels remained.

One had been removed.

Behind it was a narrow steel compartment.

Adam stopped.

“No.”

Derek nodded.

“That was my reaction.”

Luna closed her eyes.

“We are not doing another secret compartment.”

“I told the contractor to stop work.”

“What’s inside?”

Derek pointed.

“See for yourself.”

The compartment was not a safe.

No lock.

Just a recessed shelf.

On it sat three objects.

A bottle of bourbon.

Three glasses.

And an envelope.

Luna stepped closer.

Victor’s handwriting.

TO MY CHILDREN.

Derek said, “I haven’t opened it.”

Luna looked genuinely surprised.

“You waited?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He shoved his hands into his pockets.

“I am trying this new thing where I do not decide everything alone.”

Adam looked at Luna.

“Growth.”

Derek glared.

“Stop.”

Luna removed the envelope.

She did not open it immediately.

Adam expected fear.

Instead she looked tired.

“Do we need this?”

Derek understood.

“I don’t know.”

“What if it is another plan?”

“Then we burn it.”

Adam raised an eyebrow.

“Evidence destruction remains unpopular.”

“Fine. Archive it angrily.”

Luna almost smiled.

Then she looked toward Adam.

“What do you think?”

He shook his head.

“Not my letter.”

“But?”

“You don’t owe Victor another conversation.”

Luna looked at the envelope.

Derek said quietly, “Neither do I.”

For several seconds, both siblings simply stood there.

Then Luna opened it.

The letter began:

Luna and Derek—

If you found this together, then something went better than I expected.

Derek laughed bitterly.

“That is optimistic.”

Luna kept reading.

Victor wrote that the compartment had been installed during his final year.

Not as a legal mechanism.

Not a trust instruction.

Not evidence.

Just words.

He admitted that most of his attempts to control the future had come from fear.

Fear Luna would discover what he had done.

Fear Derek would repeat him.

Fear the company would vanish.

Fear his children would stop loving him if they knew him completely.

Luna paused.

Derek looked at the floor.

Victor wrote:

Fear made me treat both of you as extensions of myself.

Adam watched Luna’s hands.

They remained steady.

I told Luna that discipline made her strong when I meant obedience made me comfortable.

Luna swallowed.

I told Derek ambition made him dangerous when I meant his resemblance to me frightened me.

Derek looked away.

Victor admitted the trust conditions were cruel.

He had convinced himself pressure created character.

What it really created was competition.

He wrote that if the two of them ever reached the point of reading the letter together voluntarily, the conditions no longer mattered.

Then came a line that made Derek sit down.

I do not ask either of you to forgive me.

Luna stopped.

Adam thought of Victor’s note from Daniel’s attic letter.

Sorry I loved her like something I owned.

Same realization.

Different audience.

Victor continued.

I ask only that you stop confusing beating each other with escaping me.

Derek covered his mouth with one hand.

Luna stared at the page.

Then slowly sat beside him.

The letter ended without instructions.

No transfer.

No hidden asset.

No test.

Victor merely wrote:

The bourbon was Michael’s favorite brand. I hated it.

If you ever drink it together, complain about his taste instead of mine.

Derek stared at the bottle.

Then laughed.

A real laugh.

Luna joined him.

Adam stood several feet away and let them have the moment.

Derek wiped his eyes.

“I cannot believe he hid alcohol inside a wall.”

Luna looked at the bottle.

“I can.”

“Do you want to open it?”

She considered.

“Yes.”

Derek poured three glasses.

Then looked at Adam.

“Four problem.”

Adam shrugged.

“I don’t need one.”

Luna held out her glass.

“You are part of this.”

Derek sighed.

“Unfortunately.”

Adam took the third glass.

Derek drank from the bottle cap.

“This is humiliating.”

Luna tasted the bourbon.

Made a face.

“That is terrible.”

Derek tried it.

“Awful.”

Adam tasted it.

It was excellent.

He looked at both of them.

“You are spoiled.”

They sat on the bare office floor beneath the opened wall panel.

For perhaps the first time, Luna and Derek spoke about Victor without arguing over what he had intended.

They talked about actual memories.

Victor ruining pancakes when the cook was sick.

Victor teaching Derek to drive and nearly having a stroke when Derek backed into a mailbox.

Victor refusing to dance at events.

Victor secretly watching terrible courtroom dramas.

Luna remembered him once driving two hours because she had called from boarding school sick and lonely.

Derek remembered Victor falling asleep during his graduation and denying it afterward.

Good memories.

Bad man.

Good father sometimes.

Terrible father other times.

Contradictions they no longer needed to flatten.

Adam listened.

Near noon, Derek stood.

“I have somewhere to be.”

Luna looked surprised.

“Where?”

“Lunch.”

“With?”

He
