10 – Julian’s Mother Became the First Person Richard Erased, and Her Hidden Files Revealed the Method He Intended to Use on Me

Margaret Sterling had been buried twelve years earlier in a family plot beside the place where Richard would later be buried.

At least, that was what the records said.

Her obituary described a sudden illness.

Private funeral.

Closed coffin.

Immediate family only.

The same language appeared throughout Richard’s arrangements.

Privacy.

Dignity.

No public viewing.

No unnecessary attention.

Once you knew what to look for, the pattern was almost insulting.

Julian sat alone in the conference room we had begun using at the house.

He had not spoken since Marcus found Margaret’s name.

Chloe stayed near the far wall.

She had known Julian’s mother only through stories.

I knew her slightly better.

Margaret was elegant, restrained, and far warmer than Richard.

She sent handwritten birthday cards.

Remembered what wine people liked.

Spoke softly enough that others stopped talking to hear her.

Then she supposedly died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Julian had been thirty-two.

“How much did you see?” I asked.

He looked up.

“What?”

“After your mother died.”

His eyes hardened.

“Don’t.”

“I need the facts.”

“You want me to tell you whether I saw her body.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

The answer came quietly.

“The hospital said viewing would be difficult because of the circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

“Complications.”

“What complications?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did your father arrange everything?”

“Yes.”

“Did you question him?”

Julian laughed once.

A small, broken sound.

“You really still don’t understand what it was like.”

“Then explain it.”

“My father handled everything.”

“That isn’t an explanation.”

“In our house, it was.”

I waited.

Julian rubbed both hands over his face.

“My mother wanted to leave him.”

The room went still.

“When?”

“The year before she died.”

“Did she tell you?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“She changed her mind.”

“You believed that?”

“I wanted to.”

“Did she?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked toward the windows.

“She told me she was afraid of him.”

The statement hung between us.

“What kind of afraid?”

“She never said.”

“Julian.”

“She said my father treated people like assets.”

That phrase sounded familiar.

My father had used almost the same language.

“She said if someone stopped being useful, he either bought their silence or made them irrelevant.”

“Did Margaret know about Meridian?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Did she know about Richard’s other companies?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Too much, apparently.”

Marcus had already begun tracing activity under Margaret’s name.

The records showed something extraordinary.

Three months after her death, several corporate authorizations were filed carrying her signature.

One year later, a trust was modified with her approval.

Two years later, a property transaction listed her as beneficial owner.

No death certificate prevented the financial machine from using her.

Because the entities involved were designed to conceal beneficial ownership.

Death had not ended Margaret’s usefulness.

It had removed her ability to object.

My skin went cold.

That was the method.

Not simply kill someone.

Erase their ability to contradict documents.

Then keep using their identity.

If Richard succeeded in incapacitating me, he could continue moving Meridian-related assets while my apparent signatures and prior approvals supported the story.

If I died, even better.

I would become administratively useful forever.

“Your father didn’t just want Meridian,” I said. “He wanted a dead owner.”

Julian looked at me.

He did not deny it.

Eleanor entered with new information from the medical records.

Margaret’s death certificate named a cerebral event.

Signed by Dr. Nathan Vale.

The same physician whose name appeared on the independent toxicology testing connected to my father.

That should have been impossible.

“Why would Vale order independent testing on my father if he worked with Richard?”

Marcus answered.

“Maybe he changed sides.”

“Or maybe Richard wanted the testing done.”

“For what purpose?”

“Control.”

Julian spoke before Marcus could.

“My father always tested systems.”

I turned.

“What does that mean?”

“If he wanted to know whether something could be detected, he created a smaller version first.”

“You’re saying he poisoned someone to see what doctors would find?”

“I’m saying he was capable of it.”

Chloe stared at Julian.

“You knew this about him?”

“I knew enough to be afraid.”

“And you still helped him.”

Julian looked at her.

“Yes.”

No defense.

That was new.

Marcus found Dr. Vale’s last known address.

Abandoned.

His banking activity stopped four years earlier.

But one corporate health-insurance structure continued paying premiums tied to an anonymous beneficiary.

The administrator was connected to a trust associated with Richard.

Maybe Vale was alive too.

Another ghost.

“How many people are supposedly dead in this operation?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel called.

He had new information about Liam.

The photograph Richard sent was genuine.

Location analysis placed it somewhere outside London, probably in a commercial building.

But Liam had managed to send a hidden data burst before his phone went offline.

A single file reached Chloe’s old work account.

She opened it under supervision.

Audio.

Liam’s voice.

Breathing hard.

“He’s moving Sterling tonight,” he said.

Static followed.

Then:

“Not Julian. The old man.”

Richard.

Another burst of noise.

“Vale’s alive.”

Chloe gripped the table.

Liam continued.

“Margaret wasn’t supposed to die.”

The recording ended.

No further information.

Julian stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“What does that mean?”

We all understood the words.

None of us understood the history.

Margaret wasn’t supposed to die.

If Richard had arranged something, perhaps the intended outcome had been incapacitation.

Control.

Like me.

Something went wrong.

Or someone changed the plan.

Eleanor steadied Julian before he could start pacing.

“Sit down.”

He ignored her.

“My father killed her.”

“We don’t know that.”

“I know.”

“You suspect.”

“I know.”

He struck the table with his palm.

For the first time since arriving, Julian lost control completely.

“He told me she changed her mind about leaving. Then she collapsed. Then he wouldn’t let me see her. He told me I was being selfish because the body—”

His voice failed.

No one interrupted.

He turned away.

I watched the man who had drugged me stand several feet away grieving a mother he had already mourned twelve years earlier.

Compassion arrived unwanted.

It did not soften what he had done.

But it complicated the shape of him.

Richard had spent decades teaching his son that fear was loyalty.

Julian had eventually copied the lesson onto me.

Marcus returned to the files from my father’s case.

A document referenced Margaret indirectly.

M.S. contact requesting confidential meeting.

Date: fourteen months before her death.

My father had met her.

Julian stared.

“Why?”

Marcus opened the attached notes.

Margaret contacted my father because she had discovered Richard’s unauthorized Meridian licensing structure.

She wanted advice.

More than that.

She wanted out.

She had copied records.

She offered to provide them if my father helped protect her financially.

My father agreed.

Then Margaret disappeared from the correspondence.

Eleven months later, she died.

“So my father knew,” I said.

“Partly,” Marcus replied.

My father’s later conflict with Richard had roots much older than I understood.

Margaret may have been his first inside source.

Her death would have warned him what Richard was capable of.

Maybe that was why he built the Covenant.

Not because he feared losing money.

Because he had watched Richard erase the woman closest to him.

The files included a reference number for Margaret’s copied records.

MARGARET ARCHIVE B.

No archive was in the cold-room case.

“Where is Archive A?” Chloe asked.

Marcus searched.

Nothing.

Then I remembered my father’s letter.

Do not confuse Julian’s weaknesses with Richard’s ambitions.

Maybe my father had expected Julian to become involved.

Maybe he had left something specifically for him.

I asked Julian about any unusual package my father sent before the stroke.

He shook his head.

Then stopped.

“There was a book.”

“What book?”

“He gave me a book for my birthday.”

“When?”

“Three weeks before he collapsed.”

“What was strange about that?”

“My birthday was months earlier.”

I stared at him.

“Do you still have it?”

He laughed bitterly.

“You probably threw it out when you cleared my office.”

“I cleared nothing.”

His expression changed.

Neither had he.

We went to Julian’s office at the opposite end of the house.

The room had been disturbed during his departure, but not emptied.

Books covered one wall.

He stood in front of them scanning titles.

Then pulled out a hardbound biography of a naval explorer.

I knew it.

My father loved stories about navigation.

Julian opened the cover.

Inside, a handwritten inscription.

For Julian — if you ever decide to choose your own compass.

J.H.

My father.

Julian sat down.

“He knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That I was afraid of Richard.”

The book looked ordinary.

Until Chloe noticed the binding.

One section of pages did not sit correctly.

A technician examined it.

Hidden inside the hollowed spine was a memory card.

Another archive.

Not B.

A.

Margaret Archive A.

Julian stared at it.

My father had given him evidence against Richard years earlier.

Julian never found it.

Maybe because he never understood the inscription.

Choose your own compass.

He had not.

Not then.

The archive contained scanned letters, financial ledgers, and one video.

Margaret Sterling.

Alive.

Recorded thirteen years earlier.

She sat in a room I recognized immediately.

My father’s office.

“I am making this statement because Richard will deny everything if I leave,” she said.

Her hands shook.

“My husband has used private companies to conceal licensing income, bribe intermediaries, and transfer ownership rights without lawful authority.”

Julian covered his mouth.

Margaret continued.

She described accounts.

Names.

Dr. Vale.

Then she spoke about something darker.

Richard had begun experimenting with medical control.

Not murder.

Sedation.

Medication.

Induced health crises.

Enough to make people temporarily incapable of acting.

Enough to sign emergency authorizations.

Enough to create periods in which Richard’s lawyers could move documents through supposedly urgent procedures.

“He says an incapacitated owner is easier than a hostile one,” Margaret said.

My stomach turned.

That was me.

The twenty-third.

The renewal deadline.

Richard had used the same method before.

Margaret said she discovered he planned to use medication on an investor who refused to sell.

She threatened to report him.

Three weeks later, she became ill.

The video ended there.

Julian wept without sound.

Then the final file opened.

My father had added a note after Margaret’s death.

I believe Richard intended to disable her temporarily. Something went wrong, or someone altered the dose. Vale knows which.

That aligned with Liam’s message.

Margaret wasn’t supposed to die.

The implication was clear.

Dr. Vale knew whether the death was accidental.

Or whether another person had changed the plan.

Marcus traced one more detail.

On the night Margaret died, Dr. Vale’s clinic received a private payment.

Not from Richard.

From a company controlled by someone else.

A young executive inside Sterling operations.

Twenty-nine years old at the time.

Julian Sterling.

Everyone turned toward him.

Julian stared at the screen.

“I never paid him.”

The record said otherwise.

His signature appeared on the authorization.

I knew exactly what that meant.

Another forged signature.

Another liability package.

Richard had planted evidence against his own son years before doing the same to me.

Julian finally understood the full design.

His father had never trusted him.

He had merely kept him useful.

And if Richard ever needed someone blamed for Margaret’s death, the paperwork had been waiting for twelve years.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Richard Framed His Own Son Before He Framed Me, but Dr. Vale’s Survival Offered the First Chance to Prove How the Deaths Were Engineered

Margaret Sterling had been buried twelve years earlier in a family plot beside the place where Richard would later be buried.
