them.

“Where?”

Chloe whispered, “Zurich.”

Alive.

Protected.

Living quietly while I had buried my father believing nature had taken him.

My phone buzzed.

Julian.

I answered.

“Claire.”

“Why did you take the medication bottle?”

Silence.

He knew.

“You saw the archive.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know.”

“I know you hid evidence.”

“I was trying to keep Richard from learning Thomas named Marianne.”

“You protected her.”

“I protected you.”

My anger surged.

“No.”

He went silent.

“You protected a bargain.”

“Yes.”

“Say it clearly.”

“I made a bargain.”

“With the man who threatened my father.”

“Yes.”

“With the woman who tampered with his medicine.”

“I didn't know exactly what she had done until later.”

“But you knew enough to hide the bottle.”

“Yes.”

“To prevent investigators finding out.”

“Yes.”

Each admission made something inside me colder.

“Why?”

“Because Richard told me he would kill you if I exposed Marianne.”

“And you believed him.”

“Yes.”

“You could have told me.”

“I promised Thomas.”

“That promise ended when you hid evidence of his death.”

Julian's breathing changed.

“You're right.”

I hated how easily he said it.

Not because he was wrong.

Because he had finally stopped defending himself only after there was nothing left to defend.

“Where are you?”

“Moving toward Zurich.”

My body went still.

“Why?”

“Marianne.”

“Don't touch her.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Julian.”

“I mean it.”

“Then what?”

“She has the original medication records.”

“How do you know?”

“Richard kept them as leverage over her.”

“And now?”

“She took them when she ran.”

“Can she prove what happened?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Liam.

His face was rigid.

“Does Liam know you're going?”

“No.”

“He does now.”

Julian went quiet.

Liam stared at the screen.

“My mother is alive?”

Julian answered, “Yes.”

“Where exactly?”

“I’m not giving that over an open line.”

“I want to talk to her.”

“I know.”

“Julian.”

“She killed Thomas because Richard convinced her Liam would go to prison if she didn't help.”

Liam looked as if someone had struck him.

“What?”

Julian continued.

“She didn't intend a fatal dose.”

“That doesn't matter,” I said.

“No.”

At least he did not minimize it.

“What matters now,” Julian said, “is that Richard is going toward her too.”

“Why?”

“Because the mirror exposed the same file to investigators.”

Richard needed to eliminate the living witness.

I stood.

“Then get authorities there.”

“I already did.”

My anger paused.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you going?”

“Because Marianne called me.”

“When?”

“Five minutes ago.”

“What did she say?”

Julian hesitated.

“She said Richard has Chloe.”

I looked toward Chloe’s screen.

Empty.

Her connection had disconnected without any of us noticing.

“Chloe?” Liam shouted.

No response.

A message arrived from Richard.

One photograph.

Chloe in the back seat of a car.

Hands bound.

Beside her sat Marianne Vance.

Older now.

Terrified.

Alive.

Beneath it:

Zurich. Midnight.

Then:

Bring Claire.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Richard Lured Us to Zurich With Two Hostages, but the Person Who Betrayed Him Had Been Beside Him From the Beginning

The archival mirror did not arrive as one neat folder.
