ground.

Michael had written those words before Evan ever worked at the diner.

Before Mrs. Alvarez.

Before the Saturday Table.

Before any of us knew what shape his grief would take.

Tell him I loved that he wanted to fix things even when he was little. Tell him the hard part is learning which things are his to fix.

I folded the letter.

For several minutes I could not speak.

Cole gave me space.

Then one of the officers testing the digital recorder called him over.

The device still worked.

A file had been saved.

Seven minutes.

Forty-two seconds.

Cole listened through headphones.

His expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He removed them.

“The recording names Raymond Tolland.”

“And?”

“Another person.”

“Who?”

Cole looked at Ben.

Then at me.

“David Rainer.”

My stomach dropped.

D.

Michael’s coworker.

The man who had warned him to delete the photographs.

Ben closed his eyes.

“I knew it.”

I turned.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“That isn’t the same.”

“No.”

“What does the recording say?”

Cole’s face remained careful.

“I’m not going to characterize evidence before investigators review it.”

“Sergeant.”

“It sounds like a conversation about changing disposal records.”

“Between Ray and David?”

“Yes.”

“Anything about Michael?”

Cole hesitated.

“One line.”

“What line?”

“Ray asks whether Michael can be controlled.”

I felt cold.

“And David?”

Cole looked toward the recorder.

“He says, ‘Leave him to me.’”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: David Rainer Returned Before Police Could Find Him and Gave Evan One Choice Michael Had Never Been Allowed to Make

Benjamin Ross had not called me in two years and six months.
