house.

“What was in the folder?” he asked.

“Cole didn’t say.”

“He knows.”

“Probably.”

“Why won’t he tell us?”

“Because police enjoy making mothers furious.”

“That’s not a real reason.”

“It’s the one I have at six in the morning.”

He pulled the blanket tighter.

“Was it the folder Dad gave Ray?”

“I wondered that too.”

“Same color.”

“Blue office folders are not rare.”

“But somebody put it in our house.”

“Yes.”

That fact sat between us.

Someone had entered the place where Evan slept.

Nothing about the investigation had frightened me as much as that.

Not Ridgeway.

Not Ray.

Not even Michael’s letter.

The unlocked space of our home had been violated.

At eight-twenty, Cole called.

He asked us to meet him at the station.

My father drove.

Evan protested.

“You’re not driving while you haven’t slept.”

“I’m capable.”

My father looked at him through the mirror.

“Your mother once backed into a mailbox after sleeping eight hours.”

“That mailbox was poorly positioned.”

“It was beside the road.”

Evan smiled.

The joke lasted ten seconds.

At the station, Cole took us into a small interview room.

Ben was already there.

So was David.

Seeing David made Evan stiffen.

“Why is he here?”

Cole answered.

“Because he recognized something.”

On the table lay the blue folder inside a clear evidence sleeve.

The folder was faded.

One corner bent.

Evan leaned closer.

“That looks like it.”

“Don’t touch.”

“I know.”

Cole opened a second evidence bag.

Inside were photocopied disposal manifests.

Photographs.

A handwritten ledger.

And a note.

Not Michael’s handwriting.

Cole slid a copy toward me.

YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.

Below it:

ASK DAVID WHO MICHAEL WAS PROTECTING.

I looked at David.

He appeared ill.

“What does that mean?”

David rubbed both hands over his face.

“I hoped it meant nothing.”

“Apparently somebody disagrees.”

Evan stared at him.

“Who was Dad protecting?”

David looked toward Cole.

Cole nodded.

“Tell them.”

David swallowed.

“Aaron.”

I frowned.

“The driver?”

“Yes.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

David leaned forward.

“The dumping started before Michael found out.”

“We know.”

“Aaron knew first.”

I looked at Cole.

He remained silent.

David continued.

“Aaron drove three illegal loads.”

Evan frowned.

“He said he refused.”

“He eventually did.”

“So he lied.”

“Yes.”

My anger sharpened.

“Why?”

“Because admitting he drove the first loads made him part of the crime.”

Aaron had portrayed himself as a driver who discovered wrongdoing and refused.

The truth was messier.

He participated first.

Then stopped.

“What changed?”

David looked down.

“A kid got sick.”

The room went still.

“What kid?”

“Boy named Nathan Bell.”

I had never heard the name.

David explained that one dumping area drained toward private wells.

A family living nearby began having health problems.

Their eight-year-old son developed severe symptoms.

Doctors could not initially determine why.

“Michael heard about it.”

“How?”

“Aaron told him.”

Aaron had seen the family’s address on a delivery route and realized where the runoff went.

That was when he refused further dumping.

He went to Michael because Michael was one of the few supervisors he trusted.

“So Michael started investigating for Aaron.”

“Yes.”

“Why not go directly to authorities?”

“Aaron was afraid he’d be charged.”

“And Michael?”

“He told Aaron he’d keep his name out until he had proof.”

Evan looked at the note.

“So Dad was protecting him.”

“Yes.”

I thought about Michael’s final morning.

Taking evidence to state investigators.

Maybe he had been trying to protect a frightened driver who had done something wrong and then tried to stop something worse.

“What happened to Nathan?”

David’s face tightened.

“Recovered, mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“Long-term kidney issues.”

Evan looked sick.

“That’s why Dad wouldn’t stop.”

David nodded.

“Once he knew a child had been hurt, there was no stopping him.”

That sounded like Michael.

It also sounded like Evan.

I looked at my son.

He noticed.

“Don’t.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You thought it.”

“I did.”

Cole tapped the blue folder.

“The documents left in your house include medical-well testing that Michael did not have in the storage unit.”

“Where did they come from?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Ray?”

“Possibly.”

“Vance?”

“Possibly.”

“Someone else?”

“Yes.”

Evan pointed toward the note.

“If Vance left this, why tell us Dad wasn’t the target?”

Cole studied him.

“Good question.”

“What if Vance is trying to say he didn’t kill Dad?”

“Possible.”

“Then why run?”

“Also a good question.”

David spoke quietly.

“Because Ray is dead.”

We looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“If Vance thinks Ray’s death is connected, he might be scared too.”

I stared.

“You’re suggesting Vance is hiding because he thinks someone is killing people involved.”

David nodded.

“That’s what I’d do.”

“You hid for three years.”

“Exactly.”

It was difficult to argue.

Cole’s phone rang.

He stepped outside.

Evan looked at David.

“Did Dad hate you?”

David flinched.

“I don’t know.”

“You were his friend.”

“Once.”

“You took money.”

“Yes.”

“You helped cover up dumping.”

“Yes.”

“And he still gave you copies.”

David looked at the table.

“Your father believed people could choose differently right up until they proved they wouldn’t.”

“Did you?”

“Choose differently?”

“Yes.”

David thought.

“Too late.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

A faint smile crossed David’s face.

“You really are Michael’s kid.”

Evan did not smile back.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After he died.”

“That’s pretty late.”

“Yes.”

The bluntness hurt David.

He accepted it.

“I spent three years keeping evidence instead of destroying it.”

“Because you were scared.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“Because someday I hoped I’d stop being scared.”

Evan considered him.

“That’s not very impressive.”

“No.”

“But you came.”

“Yes.”

Evan nodded once.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

There was a difference.

Cole returned.

“We found Vance’s vehicle.”

“Where?”

“Riley Lake.”

Evan straightened.

“The fishing place?”

“No. Main lake.”

“Is he there?”

“Vehicle is. He isn’t.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did he leave anything?”

“We’re searching.”

“Do you think he’s dead?”

“I don’t know.”

Again.

Truth before evidence.

Cole looked toward my father, who had been waiting outside.

“I want Emily and Evan somewhere secure.”

“I can take them home,” Dad said.

“No.”

I looked at Cole.

“Why?”

“Because whoever entered your house knew you weren’t there.”

My skin chilled.

“That means they were watching.”

“Possibly.”

“Or they knew where we went.”

“Possibly.”

Evan asked, “Who knew?”

Too many people.

Sal.

Ben.

My parents.

Police.

Mrs. Alvarez knew we had left the diner but not necessarily where we slept.

David did not.

Aaron might have guessed.

I looked at Ben.

He saw it.

“I didn’t tell anyone.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“You thought it.”

Evan almost smiled at the familiar phrase.

Cole arranged a temporary hotel under another name.

No social media.

No unnecessary calls.

No Saturday Table for Evan until further notice.

That caused the largest argument of the morning.

“It’s Sunday tomorrow anyway.”

“Next Saturday too.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“It’s temporary.”

“People need—”

“Other adults are there.”

He stopped.

The old reflex.

If he wasn’t present, somebody might not be helped.

I touched his shoulder.

“Remember Dad’s letter.”

His jaw tightened.

“Things that belong to adults.”

“Yes.”

He nodded reluctantly.

We spent that afternoon in a hotel twenty minutes away.

Evan hated it.

I hated it more.

At four, Tessa texted through Sal.

Marissa had been moved out of intensive care.

That news gave us something good to hold.

At five, Sal sent a photograph.

Saturday laughed.

“Management?”

“Apparently you’ve been promoted.”

He studied the picture.

“They’re fine without me.”

The realization contained relief and disappointment.

“Yes.”

“That’s weird.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Is that what you meant?”

“About what?”

“Not carrying everything.”

I nodded.

“A good system survives when one person steps away.”

He saved the photograph.

At six-thirty, Cole called.

Vance had been found.

Alive.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Where?”

“A cabin near Riley who?”

“He won’t say.”

“Did he enter our house?”

“He denies it.”

“Did he leave the folder?”

“He bribery.”

“What about Michael?”

“He admits meeting him.”

“The fishing trip?”

“Yes.”

“He threatened him.”

“Vance says no.”

“Of course.”

“He claims he told Michael to think about his family because exposing the scheme could cost Michael quiet.

“Yes.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“By Ray?”

“Vance says Tolland told him he had people watching him?”

Cole did not answer that.

“What about the crash?”

“Vance denies any knowledge before it happened.”

“And Ray’s
