it.”

“Did he know?”

“He claims not until after the crash.”

“And then?”

Cole’s face hardened.

“He helped cover up Lowell’s connection to Ridgeway.”

There it was.

Cowardice becoming crime.

“Why?”

“Because an investigation into Lowell would expose the bribery scheme.”

“So Michael died and Vance used his death as another reason to hide everything.”

“Yes.”

Evan looked down.

“Did Lowell know Dad was in the other car?”

“Afterward, certainly.”

“And he stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

The room became heavy.

Cole’s phone rang again.

He listened.

Then looked directly at us.

“What?”

I asked.

“Lowell’s phone just came online.”

“Where?”

Cole’s expression tightened.

“Near Sal’s diner.”

Evan stood.

The Saturday Table.

Mrs. Alvarez.

Sal.

Carla.

People who had no idea a man tied to the investigation might be nearby.

I reached for my phone.

Cole stopped me.

“Don’t call.”

“Sal is there.”

“Officers are already moving.”

“Mrs. Alvarez—”

“Emily.”

“I’m calling him.”

“No. If Lowell is watching, we don’t want people suddenly running.”

Evan looked terrified.

“Why would he go there?”

Nobody answered.

Then I remembered the anonymous note.

Your son is being used.

Perhaps Lowell believed Evan was being used to draw attention back to Michael’s evidence.

Or perhaps he believed Evan possessed something still missing.

“What does he want?”

Cole looked at the evidence spread across the table.

“That,” he said, “is what we’re going to find out.”

<a
