me.

“You can.”

I read.

Michael told Evan that someday he would be old enough to understand why adults sometimes made choices that looked brave from the outside but were really driven by fear.

He admitted he had been afraid.

Afraid of losing work.

Afraid of putting us in danger.

Afraid of staying quiet after discovering people were being hurt.

Then he wrote about Evan.

You always want to fix everything.

I looked up.

Evan wiped his face.

“Keep going.”

I did.

Michael wrote that when Evan was six, he tried to repair a dead bird’s wing with tape.

At eight, he emptied his piggy bank after seeing a television fundraiser.

At ten, he tried to give his winter coat to a boy who had forgotten his.

I remembered all three.

Then came the line that silenced me.

Being kind is not the same as being responsible for every pain you can see.

Evan covered his mouth.

I reached across the table.

He took my hand.

Michael continued:

If you become the kind of man who helps people, I’ll be proud. But learn to come home. Learn to keep enough of yourself that the people who love you don’t spend their lives waiting for you to return.

I could not read the final lines aloud.

So Evan did.

“Help when you can.
