Margaret tried to expose them."

"And Eleanor?"

"Chose the family."

My grandfather's letter flashed in my memory.

Eleanor knows part of the truth, but not all of it. She chose the family once when it mattered most.

Helen knew.

Or believed she knew.

"What does this have to do with the compass?"

"Your grandfather kept evidence for Margaret."

"The archive."

"Part of it."

"And the wafer?"

Silence.

So she knew about it.

"What's on the wafer?"

"Come to Unit 318."

"You tell me first."

"No."

"If you want the compass, you explain."

"You think you're negotiating."

"I am."

"For another forty-three minutes."

My anger sharpened.

"If Eleanor dies, you lose the only person who can verify your story."

Helen's response came instantly.

"I don't need Eleanor alive to prove what she did."

"Then why take her?"

This time the pause lasted longer.

"Because I wanted her to see who came for her."

The answer unsettled me.

"Me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"So she would finally understand what Arthur understood years ago."

"What?"

"Your grandfather didn't abandon the family."

Helen's voice lowered.

"He was building a case against them until the day he died."

The line went dead.

Dad stared at me.

"He died of a heart attack."

"Are you sure?" Clara asked.

Dad looked wounded by the question.

Then afraid.

Vance handed Marcus's phone to an agent.

"Trace both numbers."

I turned toward him.

"I'm going to Unit 318."

"So are we."

"No visible teams."

"Agreed."

That surprised me.

Vance looked at the clock on his phone.

"Because we're no longer treating this as a simple hostage exchange."

"What are we treating it as?"

He glanced at the black wafer.

"An operation designed by someone who has been waiting years for you, Eleanor, the compass and federal investigators to be in the same place."

Marcus looked between us.

"And me?"

Vance's eyes settled on him.

"That's what I'm trying to determine."

The drive back toward Golden took twenty minutes.

I sat in the rear with Clara.

Dad rode in another vehicle.

Marcus was separated from us.

Vance refused to tell Helen we were coming.

No confirmation.

No message.

At 11:39, the storage facility appeared beyond a strip mall.

Unit 318 sat in the last row.

The metal door was closed.

One light glowed through the narrow office window near the entrance.

No cars moved.

Vance parked two blocks away.

"Eleven minutes."

I opened my door.

Clara grabbed my wrist.

"You're not going in alone."

"I have to make it look that way."

"That is not the same thing."

"I know."

She pulled me closer.

"If Eleanor is lying, if Helen is lying, if everybody in this family is lying, I don't care."

Her voice shook.

"You come back."

I nodded.

"That's the plan."

"No heroic improvising."

"You married the wrong man."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"Not funny."

"I know."

I kissed her forehead.

Then I walked toward Unit 318 carrying the brass compass.

Nothing else.

At 11:48, the unit door opened six inches.

Helen stood inside.

No glasses this time.

No disguise except the name she'd worn for years.

She looked almost exactly like her photograph in the Mercer Archive.

"You're early."

"I hate being late."

A strange expression passed over her face.

"You lost your job for being late."

"Information travels."

"In this family, information is the family."

She opened the door wider.

Eleanor sat in the center of the unit.

Alive.

Hands bound.

Blood dried above her eyebrow.

Her eyes widened when she saw me.

"I told you not to come."

"I've had a day full of people telling me what to do."

Helen shut the door behind me.

A pistol rested in her right hand.

Not aimed at me.

Yet.

"Give me the compass."

"First tell me whether my grandfather died naturally."

Eleanor turned sharply toward Helen.

"Helen."

"That's not my name."

"What is it?"
