disappearing.

“Why?”

“Because she did not trust any one person with everything.”

That sounded exactly like the woman from the video.

Arthur stood.

“We're meeting now.”

Thomas agreed.

Samuel arranged secure transportation.

Before the call ended, I asked one question.

“Thomas.”

“Yes?”

“When Brenda asked for my overhead space, did you know who I was?”

“No.”

“So none of this was staged.”

“No.”

“You were just there.”

“Yes.”

“Why that flight?”

A pause.

“I was coming to meet Eleanor.”

Arthur's face changed.

“For what?”

Thomas answered.

“Because three weeks ago, Marissa contacted someone.”

The room went silent.

Arthur gripped the table.

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then answered.

“Eleanor.”

Arthur looked as though the floor had shifted under him.

His sister came back on the line.

“She called me.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“After years?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Eleanor's voice became quiet.

“That she thought Brenda was getting worse.”

Arthur looked toward me.

“She was watching.”

“Yes.”

“She knew about other complaints?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Danielle?”

“No.”

My involvement really had been random.

A bag.

A seat.

A question.

A refusal.

Then everything opened.

Eleanor continued.

“Marissa said she was considering coming back.”

“Back where?”

“Chicago.”

“When?”

“She didn't say.”

“Why now?”

“Because she found out Daniel was planning to move into corporate operations.”

Priya searched.

Her expression changed.

“He's on a succession shortlist.”

“For what?” I asked.

Arthur answered.

“Chief operating officer.”

The room went still.

The very position Benjamin had once held.

If Daniel moved upward, the person who had allegedly protected Brenda and altered incident records would gain even more control.

Arthur's face hardened.

“That is why Marissa resurfaced.”

Eleanor said, “Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Then who does?”

Eleanor took a long breath.

“The lawyer.”

Samuel looked toward Priya.

“What lawyer?”

Eleanor answered.

“Rebecca Finch.”

The same firm.

Keller, Ruiz and Finch.

Arthur looked toward the clock.

“Tell her we're coming.”

Eleanor replied, “She already knows.”

Arthur frowned.

“How?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“Because I think Rebecca is the one texting Danielle.”

My phone vibrated at that exact moment.

Same number.

One new message.

Bring Arthur.

A second appeared.

Come without company counsel.

Then a third.

Marissa has decided whether she trusts him.

<a
