18 – Marissa Returned With the One Original Record Nobody Could Rewrite, and Brenda Finally Had to Answer for What She Had Done

By evening, I had slept for three hours.

It was not enough.

It was also more than I expected.

I showered at a hotel arranged by Rebecca's firm, changed clothes, called my boss, and told him the shortest version I could manage.

There had been an incident on the flight.

I was safe.

I needed another day before returning.

He did not ask for details.

“Take whatever you need.”

I sat on the edge of the bed afterward and stared at my suitcase.

Same black roller.

Still ordinary.

I wondered how long it would be before I could look at an overhead compartment without remembering a police officer's hand moving toward his handcuffs.

At six that evening, Rebecca's driver collected me.

Marissa would meet the independent investigators at a neutral office outside airline property.

Arthur was already there.

So were Priya, Samuel, Rebecca, and two attorneys representing the board's special committee.

No Daniel.

No Elaine.

No Benjamin.

No Brenda.

Not yet.

I entered the conference room.

Arthur stood.

“You okay?”

“Tired.”

“Same.”

“You look worse.”

“I am older.”

That made me smile.

Then the door opened.

Rebecca entered first.

A woman followed.

I recognized her immediately.

Older than in the Denver video.

Shorter hair.

A few silver strands near her temples.

Marissa Cole.

She stopped when she saw Arthur.

He did not approach her.

That was the right choice.

Marissa looked at me.

“Danielle?”

“Yes.”

She walked over.

For a second I thought she might hug me.

Instead she offered her hand.

I took it.

“I'm sorry we had to meet this way.”

“So am I.”

She looked at Arthur.

“Hello.”

“Hello, Marissa.”

Years existed between those two words.

Arthur said, “Thank you for coming.”

“I didn't come for you.”

“I know.”

“I came for the passengers.”

“I know.”

“And the crew members who tried to tell the truth.”

“Yes.”

Only then did she sit.

Samuel explained the process.

Recorded interview.

Independent counsel.

No promises regarding outcomes.

No assumptions that every historical allegation would be substantiated.

Marissa nodded.

“That's what I want.”

Samuel looked slightly surprised.

She noticed.

“If you decide I'm right before checking, you're repeating the same mistake.”

Arthur looked at her.

A faint understanding passed between them.

The interview lasted nearly four hours.

Marissa walked through the timeline.

Elena Price.

Emily and Jenna's missing statements.

The Denver argument.

Her hospitalization.

The hotel intrusion.

Thomas.

Eleanor.

Benjamin.

Daniel.

Elaine.

Victor.

Audit 19-B.

She separated what she knew from what she suspected.

Whenever Samuel asked, “How do you know?” she had an answer.

Sometimes documentary.

Sometimes personal observation.

Sometimes she simply said, “I don't.”

That made her stronger, not weaker.

Then Samuel asked, “You said you brought an original record.”

Marissa nodded.

She opened her bag.

Inside was an old digital voice recorder.

Not a phone.

Not connected to company systems.

“I bought this after my first complaint disappeared.”

Rebecca placed it in an evidence sleeve.

“What is on it?”

“Conversations.”

“With whom?”

“Several people.”

“Recorded lawfully?”

Rebecca answered.

“We have reviewed the applicable consent requirements for where each recording occurred. The investigators will separately determine permissible use.”

Marissa nodded.

“The one you need first is Denver.”

The forensic technician copied the device.

File dates matched the period we had been investigating.

One recording was nearly forty minutes long.

Marissa asked them to start around minute twenty-seven.

The room filled with old hotel-room sound.

Brenda's voice.

“You've made your point.”

Marissa answered.

“No. The point is that passenger reports are being changed.”

“Daniel reviewed them.”

“Daniel isn't a witness.”

“He is operations.”

“That doesn't make him a witness.”

I felt a chill.

Years earlier, Marissa had been making the same distinction we had spent all night learning.

Brenda's voice became sharper.

“You are going to ruin your career over passengers who will forget this in a week.”

Marissa answered, “Elena Price didn't forget.”

Silence.

Then Brenda.

“That woman should have moved the bag.”

Malcolm's wife.

The same logic.

The same kind of dispute.

Marissa said, “It was medical equipment.”

“She was difficult.”

“She was scared.”

“She refused an instruction.”

“It wasn't a safety instruction.”

A pause.

Then Brenda said something that made Arthur sit straighter.

“Once Daniel marks it safety, it is safety.”

Nobody in the present-day conference room moved.

Marissa's recorded voice answered.

“That isn't how facts work.”

Brenda laughed.

“You still think facts are what decides these things.”

The room became cold.

The recording continued.

Marissa asked about Flight 604.

Brenda stopped laughing.

“Don't bring that into this.”

“You protected Daniel.”

“He was attacked.”

“The paramedic report says he grabbed the passenger first.”

“You weren't there.”

“Neither was the final report.”

Silence.

Then Brenda said, “Daniel knows what I did for him.”

Marissa answered, “And now he does things for you.”

No response.

That absence was not proof by itself.

But then Brenda spoke.

“He understands loyalty.”

Arthur lowered his head.

The recording continued.

Marissa asked whether loyalty included deleting witness statements.

Brenda denied deleting anything.

“Daniel handles reports.”

“Elaine handles HR.”

Another silence.

Then Brenda said, “You need to stop saying names you don't understand.”

Marissa asked, “Is that a threat?”

“No.”

“Then what is it?”

“Advice.”

The recording ended several minutes later.

Nobody spoke.

Samuel finally said, “That establishes a number of statements we can compare against the records.”

Marissa nodded.

She did not say, I told you so.

Arthur asked, “Does Brenda know you recorded her?”

“No.”

“She will.”

“Yes.”

“How do you feel about that?”

Marissa considered.

“Relieved.”

The investigators had already arranged a formal interview with Brenda.

She had retained counsel.

She was still on administrative leave.

That afternoon, after being informed that historical incidents were under review, she had submitted a written statement.

Priya opened it.

Brenda maintained that my behavior on Flight 212 had been confrontational.

She said her decisions were based on professional judgment.

She denied discriminatory treatment.

She denied falsifying reports.

She denied instructing anyone to alter records.

She acknowledged that Daniel had sometimes advised her on escalation protocols.

She said she believed he did so appropriately.

Then came the part that interested Arthur.

Brenda claimed Marissa had been terminated for stealing confidential files and had fabricated allegations afterward in retaliation.

Marissa listened without expression.

Samuel asked, “Response?”

“I did retain records without authorization.”

“Did you fabricate the allegations?”

“No.”

“Can you prove every allegation?”

“No.”

That answer surprised one of the board attorneys.

Marissa continued.

“I can prove enough that you should investigate the rest.”

That was the difference.

She was not asking them to believe everything.

She was asking them to look.

The next morning, Brenda appeared by video with her attorney.

Marissa was not visible to her.

Neither was I.

Samuel conducted the interview.

Brenda repeated her account of my flight.

I had been argumentative.

She had felt undermined.

I had refused a direct instruction.

Samuel asked, “What safety purpose did the instruction serve?”

Brenda paused.

“Cabin management.”

“Was Ms. Brooks's bag compliant?”

“Yes.”

“Properly stowed?”

“Yes.”

“Was another passenger entitled to that specific overhead space?”

“No.”

“Did that passenger request the space?”

Brenda hesitated.

“I believed he needed it.”

“Did he tell you he could stow his bag elsewhere?”

“I don't remember.”

We had multiple witnesses who did.

Samuel continued.

“Did Ms. Brooks threaten you?”

“No explicit threat.”

“Did she raise her voice?”

“I don't remember.”

“Did she leave her seat to confront you?”

“No.”

“Use profanity?”

“No.”

“Make threatening gestures?”

“No.”

“Then what behavior justified the term hostile?”

Brenda became defensive.

“Tone.”

I felt my hands tighten.

Tone.

The word people used when facts were inconvenient.

Samuel did not react.

“Describe the tone.”

“She challenged me.”

“That describes disagreement.”

“She repeatedly questioned my authority.”

“Did she threaten safety?”

Brenda said nothing.

Samuel asked about Daniel's instruction.

Use the disruptive passenger protocol.

Brenda said she had requested guidance.

“Why Daniel?”

“He was senior operations.”

“Was he on duty?”

“I believe so.”

Records showed he was.

“Did you tell him Ms. Brooks threatened you?”

“I told him she was hostile.”

“Did you describe the baggage issue?”

“Yes.”

Samuel showed her the initial report.

Then the altered one.

“Did you ask Daniel to change this?”

“No.”

“Did you provide additional facts supporting the change?”

“No.”

Her attorney leaned toward her.

Samuel moved backward in time.

Elena Price.

Brenda remembered.

“Medical bag?”

“Yes.”

“Why was she removed?”

“She refused crew instructions.”

“Safety instructions?”

“Cabin instructions.”

“Was her bag compliant?”

“I don't remember.”

Records said yes.

Then the passenger accused of intoxication.

Brenda remembered him too.

Samuel asked about Emily's statement.

Brenda said she never saw it.

Jenna's?

No.

Marissa's complaint?

“I knew she was unhappy.”

Then Denver.

Brenda's expression changed.

“What about Denver?”

“Did you visit Marissa after she was hospitalized?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We worked together.”

“Did you tell her to surrender copied records?”

Brenda hesitated.

“I may have advised her that retaining them violated policy.”

“Did you tell her Daniel was angry?”

“I don't remember.”

“Did you tell her she could lose her job?”

“Probably.”

“Did you tell her Daniel understood loyalty?”

Brenda froze.

Her attorney looked toward her.

Samuel waited.

“That's a strange phrase,” Brenda said.

“Did you say it?”

“I don't remember.”

Samuel played the recording.

Only the relevant portion.

Brenda's own voice filled the room.

Daniel knows what I did for him.

He understands loyalty.

When it ended, Brenda did not speak.

Her attorney requested a break.

The interview resumed twenty minutes later.

Brenda looked different.

Older.

Smaller somehow.

Samuel asked about Flight 604.

This time her lawyer objected to assumptions but allowed factual questions.

“Did Daniel initiate physical contact with the passenger?”

“I don't remember.”

“You testified that the passenger attacked him without provocation.”

“That was my recollection.”

“Did you see Daniel touch the passenger first?”

Long pause.

“I saw him reach toward him.”

“Touch him?”

“I don't know.”

“Did another crew member say Daniel grabbed the passenger?”

“Possibly.”

“Why wasn't that statement in the final report?”

“I don't know.”

“Did Daniel promote you two days later?”

“Yes.”

“Was the promotion already planned?”

Brenda's eyes shifted.

“Yes.”

Records did not support that.

The application had been inactive for months.

Samuel did not accuse her.

He simply documented the discrepancy.

Then he asked the question that changed her posture completely.

“Ms. Hale, did you ever believe Daniel protected you because of your statement regarding Flight 604?”

Brenda looked at her attorney.

The attorney whispered to her.

Finally Brenda answered.

“I believed Daniel respected loyalty.”

“That's not what I asked.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

There it was.

Not a confession to falsifying every report.

Not proof of every historical allegation.

But an admission that she believed the relationship mattered.

Samuel asked, “Did that belief affect how comfortable you felt escalating passenger disputes?”

Brenda's eyes hardened again.

“I did my job.”

“Did it make you less concerned about complaints?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Samuel let it sit.

Then he asked about me.

“When you looked at Ms. Brooks before asking for her boarding pass, why did you believe verification was necessary?”

Brenda stared at him.

“Routine.”

“Did you ask the passenger immediately before her?”

“I don't remember.”

“Immediately after?”

“I don't remember.”

The boarding records and witness accounts would answer those questions.

Samuel closed his folder.

“One final question.”

Brenda waited.

“If Arthur Sterling had not been sitting in seat 1A, what do you believe would have happened to Danielle Brooks?”

For the first time, Brenda looked genuinely shaken.

She said nothing.

Samuel waited.

Her lawyer whispered.

Finally Brenda answered.

“She probably would have been removed.”

I felt the handcuffs again.

Samuel asked, “Would the incident report have described her as hostile?”

“Yes.”

“Would she have had any practical way to prove otherwise?”

Brenda looked down.

“I don't know.”

I did.

My
