ring.

Then came a message.

Please come home.

Another.

I’ll fix everything.

Another.

I’m sorry.

Then:

I’ll get help.

I stared at those four words.

Perhaps he meant them.

Perhaps fear had finally forced him to see what denial had protected him from.

But promises had become useless currency.

I needed evidence.

That afternoon, I scheduled a meeting with an attorney.

I also opened a new bank account in my name alone.

For the first time since the argument over groceries, I felt something steadier than anger.

It was not relief.

It was control.

Then my phone rang again.

This time it was Miles.

I nearly ignored it.

Something made me answer.

“Laurel?”

“Yes.”

His voice was strained.

“I heard you left.”

“I did.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Did you know about the gambling?”

A long pause.

“Some of it.”

“How much?”

“Not everything.”

“You lent him seven thousand dollars.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“He said he was getting help.”

“He wasn’t.”

“I know that now.”

I closed my eyes.

“What else, Miles?”

“What do you mean?”

“What else did Grant tell you not to tell me?”

Silence.

My stomach tightened.

“Miles.”

“I don’t know whether it matters now.”

“That is no longer your decision.”

He breathed out slowly.

“There was another loan.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What loan?”

“I don’t know the exact amount.”

“From who?”

“Not a bank.”

I stood.

“What does that mean?”

“He borrowed privately.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“Why didn’t I see it in the papers?”

“I don’t think there are normal papers.”

A cold pressure spread through my chest.

“How much?”

“I told you, I don’t know.”

“Guess.”

Miles was silent long enough that I knew the answer would be bad.

“Grant told me once that if he couldn’t get forty thousand together quickly, things were going to get ugly.”

I stared at the documents on Mara’s table.

The house.

The credit cards.

The joint account.

The refinance.

All morning, I had believed I was finally looking at the full disaster.

Now I understood I had only reached the first layer.

“When did he tell you that?”

“About five months ago.”

“Did he get the money?”

“I thought he did.”

“How?”

“I assumed that was why he refinanced the house.”

My eyes moved to the ninety-six-thousand-dollar agreement.

Maybe some of that money had paid the private debt.

Maybe not.

I thought about Grant saying he had stopped keeping track.

Then I remembered something else.

The house sale contract had been signed three months ago.

Two months after Miles’s warning.

“What happens if he still owes them?”

Miles did not answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was low.

“That’s why I’m calling.”

A car pulled into Mara’s driveway.

I went to the window.

For one terrible second, I expected Grant.

It was only a delivery van stopping next door.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Miles exhaled.

“I went to see Grant after you left.”

“And?”

“He finally showed me more of the records.”

My heartbeat quickened.

“There are debts he didn’t tell you about last night.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Miles.”

“And Laurel?”

“Yes?”

“Before you go back to that house for anything, talk to your lawyer.”

I stared through the window at the wet street.

“Why?”

His answer erased the small sense of control I had managed to build that morning.

“Because Grant may not be the only person who thinks that house belongs to him.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Lawyer’s
