once.

Then lowered.

He pointed toward Amber’s apartment.

Toward me.

Toward his truck.

He seemed offended by the inconvenience of being matters.”

“You didn't know?”

“No.”

I turned toward the front door.

“Then Bentley needs to tell you what he saw.”

Harris stopped me.

“Not right now.”

“Why?”

“He’s already been through enough today.”

“So when?”

“With a child interviewer. Proper setting.”

I disliked the phrase proper setting.

After the previous week, I distrusted anything described as proper before anyone had asked whether it was kind.

“What happens to Travis?”

“We're checking outstanding warrants and the report Amber made.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Harris gave me a tired look.

“We need evidence.”

“You have Amber.”

“We have her statement.”

“You have Bentley.”

“We may have a witness.”

“You have the truck.”

“That proves he drove here.”

My frustration rose.

“He walked toward my porch asking for a three-year-old he claims he only just learned exists.”

“I know.”

“Then why isn't he in handcuffs?”

“Because knowing someone is dangerous and proving a crime are not always the same thing.”

I hated that answer because I understood it.

Across the street, Travis was permitted to return to his truck.

An officer followed behind him.

He looked at me before getting inside.

Then at my house.

The stare lasted only two seconds.

It felt like a promise.

That afternoon Bentley refused to leave Maddie alone even long enough to shower.

I set a chair beside the bathroom door so she could sit outside with crayons.

He emerged ten minutes later with damp hair and fresh clothes.

“You can close the door next time,” I told him.

He looked toward Maddie.

“I know.”

But he did not sound convinced.

At dinner I made pot roast because Ray used to say fear was easier to face after potatoes.

Bentley picked at his plate.

Maddie ate peas one at a time.

Doug joined us.

He arrived without being invited and, for once, I didn't mind.

“What did the police say?” he asked.

“Not enough.”

Bentley stared at his plate.

Doug noticed.

“What?”

Bentley shook his head.

“Nothing.”

I waited.

He glanced toward the front windows.

Then said, “He used to yell at Mom.”

Doug put down his fork.

“Travis?”

Bentley nodded.

“When you lived somewhere else?”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember where?”

“A blue house.”

“Anything else?”

“There was a broken swing.”

I touched Doug’s arm lightly.

Enough questions.

Bentley looked at me.

“The day Mom got hurt, he came inside.”

I kept my voice quiet.

“You saw him enter?”

“He knocked.”

“Did your mother open the door?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“He had a key.”

Doug and I exchanged a look.

“Did Amber give him one?” I asked.

“I don't think so.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she changed the locks when we moved here.”

A small detail.

A terrible one.

“Did you tell Detective Harris?”

Bentley shook his head.

“I didn't tell anybody.”

“Why?”

“Mom said not to.”

“She said not to mention Travis?”

He nodded.

“She said if I told, he’d know we were scared.”

That sounded like something Amber might say while injured and desperate.

It also sounded like the kind of instruction a child could misunderstand for days.

“What happened after he came in?”

Bentley’s face changed.

I almost stopped him.

Instead I let him choose.

“He wanted money.”

“How do you know?”

“They were yelling.”

“Where were you?”

“In my room with Maddie.”

He rubbed his thumb over a scratch in the table.

“Mom told me to lock the door.”

Doug leaned back.

“Then?”

“I heard something break.”

His voice thinned.

“Then Mom screamed.”

Maddie looked up.

Bentley immediately smiled at her.

“It’s okay.”

She returned to her peas.

He lowered his voice.

“I came out.”

“What did you see?”

“Mom was in the bathroom.”

“And Travis?”

“In the hallway.”

“What was he doing?”

“Leaving.”

“Did he see you?”

Bentley nodded.

“What did he say?”

Bentley hesitated.

“Tell us only if you want to,” I said.

His eyes lifted to mine.

“He said if Mom couldn't keep her mouth shut, maybe next time he'd take something she cared about.”

Doug’s face went rigid.

I felt my fingers curl around the edge of the table.

“Did he say what?”

“No.”

Bentley looked at Maddie.

“He looked at her.”

No one spoke.

Maddie hummed softly while arranging peas into a line.

That was the moment I understood why Bentley had spent nine days guarding his sister as though the entire world were waiting outside the door.

He had not been protecting her from strangers.

He had been protecting her from a specific man.

After dinner I called Harris.

This time he came himself.

He sat with Bentley in the living room but did not question him deeply.

He listened to enough to understand.

Then he made a call.

When he returned, his voice was different.

“We’re requesting an emergency protective order for Amber and both children.”

“Tonight?”

“Tonight.”

“Will it stop him?”

“It gives us more authority if he comes near them.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No piece of paper can physically stop someone.”

Bentley heard that.

I wished Harris had softened it.

But perhaps Bentley had had enough softened truths.

“What can?” he asked.

Harris looked directly at him.

“People paying attention.”

Bentley considered that.

Then nodded.

Before leaving, Harris showed me how to check the locks and asked Doug about security cameras.

Doug stood immediately.

“I can install them.”

“Tonight?”

“If the hardware store is open.”

It was.

By ten, Doug had mounted cameras at the front porch, back entrance, driveway, and side yard.

Bentley followed him from room to room carrying screws.

At one point I heard Doug say, “That's a Phillips head.”

Bentley replied, “I know.”

Doug smiled.

“Of course you do.”

The moment was so ordinary that it hurt.

Near midnight, the house finally became quiet.

Maddie slept in my guest bed.

Bentley lay on an air mattress beside her.

I checked every lock twice.

At 12:43, my phone buzzed.

A motion alert.

Front camera.

My stomach dropped.

I opened the feed.

The porch was empty.

Then I noticed something at the bottom of the steps.

A small object.

I turned on every outside light before opening the door.

Doug, who had chosen to sleep on my couch, appeared behind me.

“What is it?”

“Stay there.”

He ignored me.

We stepped onto the porch together.

On the top step sat Maddie’s stuffed rabbit.

The one she had carried to my house.

The one that was supposed to be upstairs beside her bed.

Bentley had put it there himself before falling asleep.

Now it was outside.

Doug stared at it.

“How did that get there?”

I looked toward the camera.

Then toward the side yard.

The motion feed had shown nobody.

Someone had approached outside the camera’s view.

I picked up the rabbit.

Something was tied around its neck.

A strip of paper.

Three words written in thick black marker.

SHE BELONGS HOME.

Behind us, a floorboard creaked.

Bentley stood in the doorway.

He saw the rabbit.

Then the note.

His face went white.

“That’s his handwriting,” he whispered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Note Around Maddie’s Rabbit Proved Someone Had Entered the
