place.

Travis had driven away fast.

The damaged hubcap may have happened then.

Harris sent the information out immediately.

By seven-thirty, patrol units were searching.

We remained in the station lobby.

Maddie fell asleep against my side.

Bentley sat beside me.

“You were right about the sticker,” I said.

He shrugged.

“You notice everything.”

His face became serious.

“You have to.”

I hated how normal that sounded to him.

At eight-fifteen, Harris returned.

“We found the truck.”

Bentley sat upright.

“Where?”

“Behind an abandoned warehouse on Tucker Road.”

“Was Travis there?” I asked.

“No.”

Of course not.

“Anything inside?”

“They're getting a warrant.”

Again, waiting.

Again, procedure.

At nine-twenty, Harris’s phone rang.

He listened.

His face went still.

“What is it?” I asked.

He ended the call.

“They opened the truck.”

“And?”

He looked at Bentley, then at me.

“We found the photograph missing from Maddie’s bag.”

Bentley grabbed my hand.

Harris continued.

“And something else.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Doug frowned.

“To what?”

Harris placed a clear evidence bag on the desk.

Inside was an old brass key.

I recognized the small strip of blue paint near its teeth.

My breath left me.

“That’s Ray’s key.”

Doug looked at me.

“What?”

“The old master key.”

“For the duplex?”

I nodded.

The key had disappeared years ago.

Long before Amber moved in.

Long before Travis was supposed to know anything about us.

Harris’s voice was careful.

“Mrs. Whitaker, we need to know who had access to this key.”

I stared at the brass shape inside the plastic.

And for the first time, Travis no longer felt like a danger approaching from outside our lives.

Somehow, he had been connected to the house long before any of us realized it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Ray’s Missing Master Key Connected Travis to a Secret From Years Earlier,
