romantically.

Secretly because of this.

“What did he tell you?”

“Not much.”

“Then what did you promise?”

Bentley wiped his face.

“The last time he came, he gave me something.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Doug inhaled sharply.

“Another key?”

Bentley nodded.

“He said if a bad man ever came asking about papers, I should hide it.”

“Where is it?”

“I don't have it.”

“Where?”

His voice dropped.

“At school.”

We all stared.

“Where at school?”

“In the library.”

“How?”

“There’s an old book nobody checks out.”

Mrs. Alvarez’s borrowed books.

Bentley’s love of reading.

Ray, who knew children were often underestimated.

“What book?”

“Treasure Island.”

Of course Ray chose Treasure Island.

“What does the key open?”

Bentley shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“What did Ray say?”

Bentley closed his eyes, remembering.

“He said, ‘Blue isn't the only color that matters.’”

My mind raced.

Ray’s old key system.

Blue master.

Red garage.

Green shed.

Blue wasn't the only color.

“What color was the key?”

Bentley looked at me.

“Green.”

The shed.

Our old backyard shed.

Harris was already speaking into his radio.

I unmuted the phone.

Travis had heard enough silence to become suspicious.

“What are you doing?”

“Listening to a ten-year-old solve problems you couldn't solve in seven years.”

He cursed.

Then the line went dead.

Harris shouted into his radio.

“Move now.”

Police entered my house seconds later.

The call trace showed Travis had still been inside when the line ended.

But when officers cleared the basement, kitchen, bedrooms, and attic, he was gone.

Again.

A rear basement window stood open.

Outside, footprints led toward the alley.

Fresh tire marks waited beyond the fence.

He had escaped less than a minute before officers entered.

But he had left something behind.

On my kitchen table sat Ray’s photograph.

Beside it was a screwdriver.

And one sentence scratched directly into the wood.

THE BOY REMEMBERS TOO MUCH.

Amber read the photograph from Harris’s phone and nearly collapsed.

Bentley did not.

He looked at me.

“Can we get the key?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Now.”

This time, he was not going alone.

Police drove us to the school.

Principal Ellison opened the building after hours.

Mrs. Alvarez arrived fifteen minutes later in sweatpants and a winter coat thrown over pajamas.

Bentley led us to the library.

Third shelf from the bottom.

Treasure Island.

He removed the book.

A rectangular section had been carefully hollowed from the pages.

Inside lay a green-painted key.

And a folded note in Ray’s handwriting.

Bentley handed it to me.

The note contained only six words.

ARLENE KNOWS WHAT THE GREEN KEY OPENS.

I stared at it.

At first, I didn't.

Then a memory returned.

Ray’s gardening shed had been replaced twelve years earlier.

But before we tore it down, he removed one object from inside.

An old army-surplus footlocker.

Green.

He refused to throw it away.

After Ray died, I couldn't bear to open it.

So I moved it into storage.

Not the duplex.

Not Doug’s house.

A rented storage unit across town.

A unit whose existence Travis might never have discovered.

My breath caught.

“I know.”

Harris turned.

“Where?”

I folded the note.

“Ray’s footlocker.”

“What is in it?”

“I don't know.”

Bentley looked at me.

“But Ray thought you would.”

“No.”

I understood now.

Ray did not mean I knew what was inside.

He meant I was the only person who knew where the green footlocker had gone.

I reached for my coat.

Harris stopped me.

“We don't rush over.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Nolan just learned Bentley remembered something.”

“So?”

“So if he knew Ray gave Bentley a clue, he may know we're moving toward the next piece.”

My stomach tightened.

“You think he'll follow us.”

“I think we should assume he already is.”

Outside the library windows, headlights appeared in the school parking lot.

One vehicle.

It rolled slowly past the entrance.

Black pickup.

Missing hubcap.

Bentley whispered, “That's him.”

Harris reached for his weapon.

The truck accelerated.

By the time officers reached the doors, it was already turning onto the road.

Travis had not merely guessed that we found the key.

He had followed us to the school.

And now he knew we had something Ray had hidden from him.

Click
