We leave Ray’s evidence sitting in a metal box while Travis gets another seven years to look for it?”

“It means we don't announce our route.”

Harris gathered us into the principal’s office. Within fifteen minutes, the school parking lot filled with enough police vehicles to make Bentley’s elementary school look like the headquarters of a small invasion.

Mrs. Alvarez brought Bentley hot chocolate from the teachers’ lounge.

He held the cup but did not drink.

“You're shaking,” she said.

“I’m cold.”

“You're also scared.”

He looked irritated.

Adults had become much too willing to identify his fear.

Mrs. Alvarez did not press him.

She simply sat beside him.

I watched them while Harris and Agent Keene planned the trip to the storage facility.

Two unmarked cars would leave first.

A marked cruiser would take a deliberately obvious route in the opposite direction.

We would wait.

Then Harris, Keene, Doug, and I would travel separately.

Bentley was not coming.

That announcement caused exactly the reaction I expected.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Ray gave me the key.”

“And you gave it to me.”

“He trusted me.”

“He trusted you to keep it hidden until an adult could use it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Ray was occasionally reckless, but he was never stupid.”

Bentley crossed his arms.

“What if the box has something for me?”

“Then I will bring it to you.”

“What if Travis comes here?”

“There are six police officers in this building.”

“He got into your house.”

That silenced me.

Harris stepped in.

“He won't get into this school tonight.”

Bentley stared at him.

“You can't promise that.”

Harris paused.

“No.”

Bentley looked almost satisfied.

At least nobody was lying.

“But I can tell you this building is secured, and Nolan doesn't know whether you're staying here.”

Bentley glanced toward Maddie, who had fallen asleep across two chairs with her head in Amber’s lap.

Amber had been brought to the school after the pickup appeared.

She looked exhausted.

The hospital had discharged her only hours earlier, and every movement still hurt.

“Stay with your mom,” I told Bentley.

His jaw tightened.

Then Amber said quietly, “I need you.”

That changed everything.

Bentley looked at her.

Not Maddie.

Her.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

His resistance softened.

“What for?”

“To sit beside me.”

He considered the request.

It was small enough to accept.

“Okay.”

At 11:18, Harris finally moved us.

The storage facility sat near an industrial road on the west side of town.

I had rented Unit 214 after Ray died because I could not decide what to do with forty years of objects that suddenly became unbearable to see and impossible to discard.

His fishing rods were there.

Toolboxes.

Old Christmas decorations.

A rocking chair with one broken spindle.

And the green footlocker.

The facility manager met us inside the office.

Police had already checked the perimeter.

“No sign of Nolan,” Harris said.

“Good.”

“That does not mean relax.”

“I haven't relaxed since Tuesday.”

We walked down the corridor.

Unit 214 waited near the far end.

I entered the access code.

The steel door rolled upward with a grinding rattle.

Dust and cold air drifted out.

For a moment, I simply stood there.

Ray’s life had been reduced to shapes beneath old blankets.

Doug touched my arm.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He nodded.

At least he had learned not to ask twice.

The footlocker was behind Ray’s workbench.

Green paint.

Dented corners.

A faded military stencil.

I had seen it hundreds of times.

I had never known it mattered.

Harris photographed the lock before allowing me to use the key.

It slid in perfectly.

The mechanism resisted.

Then clicked.

I lifted the lid.

The smell hit first.

Metal.

Old paper.

Machine oil.

Ray.

For one impossible second, I expected him to be standing behind me complaining that I had opened something without asking.

Inside were three layers.

The top held ordinary things.

His army jacket.

A baseball glove.

Photographs.

Below them lay a false wooden panel.

Bentley would have found it in thirty seconds.

I nearly smiled.

Doug removed the panel after Harris documented it.

Underneath sat four sealed envelopes, two microcassette tapes, a stack of copied records, and a red notebook.

Not blue.

Not green.

Red.

Harris reached for it.

I stopped him.

“Photograph first.”

He looked at me.

“You're learning.”

“I have had aggressive teachers.”

The red notebook contained names.

Dozens.

Women.

Some entries included children.

Beside each name Ray had written dates and short notes.

LEFT HUSBAND.

SHELTER.

NEW ADDRESS COMPROMISED.

FOLLOWED BY T.N.

PAID BY SPOUSE.

My stomach turned.

Amber had never been the only one.

Travis had built a business out of returning frightened people to the people they feared.

Agent Keene flipped carefully through the pages.

“This could reopen cases across several counties.”

Doug whispered, “Dad knew all this?”

“Some of it.”

Harris pointed to several entries marked with stars.

“What do these mean?”

I recognized Ray’s system.

“He starred things when he verified them personally.”

Keene counted.

Eleven.

Eleven women Ray had independently traced through Travis’s records.

Then Doug found an envelope labeled DANIEL MERCER.

Bentley’s father.

No one opened it immediately.

We all looked at one another.

“That belongs to Bentley,” I said.

“It may contain evidence,” Harris replied.

“Then you can document it.”

He nodded.

Inside were photocopies of Daniel’s vehicle maintenance records.

A police accident report.

Photographs of the wreck.

And a handwritten note from a mechanic.

Brake line shows clean tool marks inconsistent with collision damage.

Amber had wondered for years.

Ray had investigated.

Harris’s expression hardened.

“Daniel’s death needs to be reopened.”

“It should have been years ago.”

“Yes.”

No argument.

The next envelope was labeled RAY.

Inside was a photograph of the ladder from his accident.

One leg showed a clean cut through part of the aluminum brace.

Not bent.

Cut.

Doug sat down on a cardboard box.

“Jesus.”

I could not speak.

Ray had known.

Perhaps not enough to prove it.

Enough to photograph it.

Enough to hide the photograph.

Enough to understand that the fall was no accident.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

Doug looked at me.

I was not really asking him.

The answer was in Ray’s letter.

Silence keeping you safe.

The stupid, loving, infuriating man had mistaken secrecy for protection.

Keene opened another envelope.

CARLA.

Inside were copies of payments from Nolan Recovery to Carla Reeves.

The earliest was nearly eighteen months old.

Not two months.

Carla had been feeding information to Travis far longer than she admitted.

“She lied,” Doug said.

Harris nodded.

“Substantially.”

“What about Amber?”

“She may have been watched almost from the moment she started working at the hotel.”

A terrible possibility surfaced.

“How did Carla become her friend?”

Keene looked at me.

“Good question.”

Maybe it had never been accidental.

The final envelope bore Frank Nolan’s name.

Inside was a signed statement.

Not notarized.

Not witnessed.

But detailed.

Frank admitted that Travis had used company resources to locate people outside legitimate repossession work.

He admitted accepting cash from some clients.

He admitted covering up complaints.

And near the end, he wrote:

Daniel Mercer discovered what Travis was doing and threatened to report him. I warned Travis. I have regretted that warning ever since.

Amber had believed Daniel died because he helped her.

The truth might be worse.

Frank had placed him in danger by trying to protect Travis.

Keene continued reading.

After Daniel’s death, Ray Whitaker confronted me. He believed Travis had caused the crash. I told Ray he had no proof. Ray said proof had a habit of surviving cowards.

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like Ray.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Ray told me he had copied a recording Daniel made before his death.

Harris stopped.

“What recording?”

We searched the locker.

Two tapes.

One labeled FRANK.

The other DANIEL.

The technician brought a portable player.

The tape hissed.

Then a young man’s voice.

Daniel.

I had never heard him.

Bentley would.

Later.

Not like this.

Daniel spoke quietly.

If anything happens to me, Travis Nolan did not do it alone.

Everyone in the storage unit froze.

The tape continued.

He said Travis had a partner.

Someone who accessed utility accounts and forwarding addresses.

Someone who knew how to locate people after they moved.

Daniel did not say the name immediately.

Instead he described payments.

Dates.

A meeting location.

Then:

I saw the checks. They go to C.R. Services.

Carla Reeves.

Doug stared at Harris.

“Carla wasn't just giving Travis information recently.”

“No.”

“She was involved seven years ago.”

“Yes.”

My skin prickled.

Carla had known Daniel.

Carla had known Travis.

Carla had later befriended Amber.

Not coincidence.

A long operation.

The tape continued.

Daniel said he had confronted Carla.

She denied everything.

Then threatened to tell Travis he was collecting evidence.

Three days later, Daniel died.

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke.

Harris reached for his phone.

“We need Reeves in full custody now.”

He called the station.

His expression changed before he said anything.

“What?”

He lowered the phone.

“Carla was released pending further questioning.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Forty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“She hadn't been charged with anything sufficient to hold her.”

“And now?”

“Now we have this.”

Keene was already calling federal agents.

Then the storage facility lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone swore.

Harris shouted, “Nobody move.”

Emergency lights flickered on several seconds later.

A dull red glow filled the corridor.

From somewhere beyond our unit came the metallic crash of a rolling door.

Keene drew his weapon.

Harris moved toward the corridor.

“Stay here.”

I heard an engine start.

Tires squealed.

Then silence.

Harris returned two minutes later.

“Vehicle breached the rear gate.”

“Travis?”

“Unknown.”

“Did they come inside?”

“Doesn't appear so.”

Doug looked at the open footlocker.

“Then why cut the power?”

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Not Doug’s.

It came from inside the locker.

We all stared.

Harris searched beneath the false bottom.

A prepaid phone had been taped underneath.

Its screen glowed.

Incoming call.

UNKNOWN.

Harris answered on speaker.

No one spoke.

Then a woman’s voice.

Carla.

“You found Daniel’s tape.”

Harris’s jaw tightened.

“Carla Reeves?”

“You need to listen carefully.”

“Where are you?”

“If Travis finds me first, I'm dead.”

I looked at the phone.

“You've been helping him for seven years.”

Silence.

Then Carla said, “Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel wasn't the first person Travis killed.”

My stomach turned.

“Who was?”

Carla breathed once.

Then answered.

“His mother.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Carla’s Confession Exposed the Death That Created Travis’s Power, but Her Demand for Protection Put Amber Directly in His Path

The black pickup vanished before the first patrol car reached the end of the school driveway.
