the brake line enough to cause gradual fluid loss.

Frank followed in the tow truck because Travis expected Daniel’s car to fail.

The plan, Frank claimed, was to arrive first and silent.

Then whispered, “Because I told him.”

My anger sharpened.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“What exactly?”

“That Ray met Daniel there.”

“So Travis has known the church mattered.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell him about the bells?”

“No.”

At least one clue might still belong to us.

“What kind of backup?”

“Daniel said if Travis ever got him, somebody would eventually hear the truth.”

Hear.

Not read.

Recording.

Another tape.

Another device.

“Why didn't you tell police?”

“I was a coward.”

“Yes.”

No comfort.

No argument.

Frank breathed unevenly.

“Ray said the same thing.”

Then the line went quiet.

“Frank?”

A nurse’s voice replaced him.

The call ended shortly afterward.

He had lost consciousness.

By sunrise, police surrounded the church.

The pastor arrived in a coat over his pajamas.

He had known Ray for decades.

When I told him we needed access to the bell tower, he did not ask why.

He simply found the keys.

The church smelled exactly as it always did before services.

Wood polish.

Old hymnals.

Coffee from the fellowship hall.

Grief lives strangely in familiar places.

I passed Ray’s memorial plaque.

Raymond Whitaker.

Beloved husband, father, neighbor, servant.

Servant.

He would have complained about that word.

“Sounds like I carried everybody’s luggage,” I could hear him saying.

The bell tower stairs were narrow.

Harris went first.

I followed.

Doug behind me.

Bentley remained downstairs with Amber under guard.

He had argued.

I had won.

Barely.

At the top, morning light came through dusty slats.

The old bell hung above us.

Harris searched the frame.

Doug checked the walls.

I stood still.

What would Ray notice?

What would Daniel trust Ray to remember?

Then I saw the rope.

Not the current bell rope.

An older one coiled on a hook.

Ray had repaired it years ago.

I remembered because he came home complaining that the pastor bought cheap hardware.

Near the hook was a small wooden block painted red.

Red.

Blue wasn't the only color that matters.

The old key system.

Green led to the footlocker.

Red had once meant garage.

But perhaps Ray reused the colors.

I touched the block.

It moved.

Behind it was a cavity.

Inside sat a weatherproof pouch.

Harris removed it carefully.

A microcassette.

And a note.

Daniel’s handwriting.

IF YOU FOUND THIS, GIVE IT TO AMBER.

My throat tightened.

Harris documented it.

Then played the tape.

Daniel’s voice emerged.

Clearer than before.

Amber, if you ever hear this, I'm sorry.

Amber listened from downstairs through Harris’s radio link.

I heard her sob.

Daniel continued.

He said he had discovered Travis and Frank were selling addresses.

He had also discovered Carla’s involvement.

But there was another name.

Someone who had access to utility changes and emergency contact information.

A county employee.

A man named Peter Sloan.

Keene immediately began checking.

Daniel continued.

Sloan could find almost anyone who changed service addresses.

Travis paid him.

Frank knew.

Carla knew.

Ray did not.

That was why people kept being found even after Nolan Recovery closed.

The network had never ended.

It merely changed shape.

Then Daniel said something that made Harris stop the tape.

There is one thing Travis cares about more than control.

His records.

Not because they prove crimes.

Because they prove who owes him.

Harris resumed.

Daniel explained that Travis kept a master list.

Not the ledger Ray copied.

A list of favors.

Police contacts.

Utility employees.

Tow operators.

Landlords.

People compromised enough to be useful.

“If we find that,” Doug whispered, “we find everyone.”

“Yes.”

The tape ended with Daniel telling Amber he loved her.

No dramatic speech.

No promises.

Just:

I should have left sooner. I should have chosen you sooner. I'm sorry.

Downstairs, Amber cried.

Bentley sat beside her.

He did not ask questions.

He simply held her hand.

At eight-fifteen, Keene identified Peter Sloan.

Retired county utility administrator.

Still alive.

Still local.

His current address was two miles from my church.

Police drove there.

The house was empty.

Not abandoned.

Recently emptied.

Coffee still warm.

Closet doors open.

A suitcase missing.

On the kitchen table sat an envelope.

For Travis.

Inside was five thousand dollars.

And a note.

I'M DONE. DON'T CONTACT ME AGAIN.

“He’s running,” Harris said.

“From us?”

“Or Travis.”

Then an officer found blood in the garage.

Not much.

A smear near the side door.

Sloan had not simply packed.

Something had happened.

His car was missing.

A statewide alert went out.

At nine-ten, a traffic camera found it.

Heading south.

Driver unknown.

Passenger visible.

Older male.

Possibly Sloan.

Then the next camera caught the driver’s face.

Travis.

He had Sloan.

Alive or dead, we could not tell.

“Where are they going?” I asked.

Keene studied the route.

“Interstate.”

“Mexico?”

“Too early to say.”

Then another camera caught the car leaving the interstate.

Turning east.

Toward the old Nolan Recovery yard.

The company had closed eighteen months earlier.

But Frank still owned the property.

And according to Daniel’s recording, Travis’s master list had once been kept there.

Harris looked at Keene.

“He’s cleaning up.”

Sloan knew names.

The yard might contain records.

Travis was not fleeing yet.

He was destroying the last things that could expose him.

Police mobilized.

I looked toward Bentley.

He had heard enough to understand.

“Stay here,” I told him.

He nodded.

No argument.

That frightened me more than argument would have.

“What?”

He looked at his mother.

Then at me.

“Nothing.”

“Bentley.”

He swallowed.

“Travis isn't going there just for papers.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I heard him once.”

“When?”

“The day Mom got hurt.”

“What did he say?”

Bentley closed his eyes.

“He told Frank, ‘When this is done, we burn the yard.’”

My stomach dropped.

Harris turned toward the radio.

The old Nolan Recovery property held fuel tanks.

Tow trucks.

Oil.

Chemicals.

If Travis intended to burn it, he was not merely destroying evidence.

He might be preparing to destroy Peter Sloan with it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Fire at Nolan Recovery Destroyed Travis’s Last Safe Place, but Peter Sloan’s Rescue Revealed Where He Had Taken Maddie Before

The church map changed the investigation.
