wife.

They thought I was a guarantor.

“Get off this property,” Mara said.

Grant looked at me.

“Please.”

I stepped backward.

“You need a lawyer.”

“I need you.”

“No.”

His face crumpled.

“I need you not to deny the guarantee until the sale closes.”

The sentence stripped away the last softness I felt.

He had come to Mara’s house not merely to confess.

He wanted my silence.

Again.

“If I stay quiet, you sell the house.”

“Yes.”

“Victor gets paid.”

“Yes.”

“And the afraid of because you couldn’t trust your wife enough to tell her the truth.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You are trying to protect the lie one more day.”

He stood at the curb for several seconds.

Then he got into his car.

I watched him drive away.

Mara locked the door.

I called Rebecca before I went back inside.

When I told her about the guarantee, she did not tell me to gather more records.

She did not tell me to wait for morning.

She said, “Laurel, we are contacting law enforcement tonight.”

And for the first time, the consequences Grant feared were no longer waiting
