attorney.”

I gripped the phone.

“You had an attorney?”

“Consultation only.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

Before the refinance.

Before the sale.

“What did you ask?”

“How property would work if we separated.”

My mouth went dry.

“Why?”

“Because Victor told me I needed to know whether you could claim the house.”

That sentence nearly made me sit down.

“You consulted a divorce lawyer because your bookmaker wanted to know whether I could interfere with his access to our home.”

“When you say it like that—”

“How else is there to say it?”

Grant was silent.

“Did you intend to divorce me?”

“I intended to understand options.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I didn’t want to lose you.”

“You were planning how to make me financially irrelevant.”

“I was trying to save the house.”

“You sold it.”

He began crying harder.

I closed my eyes.

There was no conversation left to have.

“You need to tell your lawyer all of this.”

“I don’t have one.”

“Then get one.”

“Laurel.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

I held the phone against my ear.

Once, those words would have been everything I wanted.

That morning they sounded tiny beside what had happened.

“I believe you’re sorry.”

He breathed unevenly.

“But I don’t trust you.”

The truth hurt both of us.

I ended the call.

At seven, I called Detective Ortiz and reported the conversation.

At eight, Rebecca called.

At nine, she sent a formal notice to Victor’s attorney denying that I had executed any guarantee, marital-property acknowledgment, business pledge, or authorization connected to Grant’s debts.

By ten thirty, Northfield’s attorney responded.

Their client denied knowingly receiving forged documents.

But something else came with the response.

A copy of the guarantee.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My stolen signature appeared beneath it.

Grant’s signature was beside mine.

The guaranteed amount was not blank as Grant had claimed.

It was capped.

Rebecca called me before sending the page.

“I want you seated.”

“I am.”

“The guarantee contains a maximum obligation.”

“How much?”

“Three hundred twenty-five thousand dollars.”

I closed my eyes.

Grant had told me the debt had once reached a little over three hundred thousand.

Victor had apparently demanded coverage above that number.

Rebecca continued.

“There is another provision.”

I opened my eyes.

“What?”

“If Grant defaulted, the guarantors authorized collection against listed assets.”

“Which assets?”

“His property.”

“And mine?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“What did he list?”

“Business income.”

My jaw tightened.

“Retirement funds.”

My stomach turned.

“And?”

Rebecca’s silence frightened me.

“And what?”

“Any future proceeds from the sale of jointly accumulated marital property.”

I stared at the wall.

Grant had not only promised Victor what I already owned.

He had promised him whatever I might someday recover from Grant.

Even my attempt to reclaim my share of the marriage had been offered in advance.

Then Rebecca said, “There is a handwritten notation beside that clause.”

“What does it say?”

She read it slowly.

Wife likely unaware. G says he can manage signature.

I stopped breathing.

Victor might not have known the signature was forged.

But someone knew I was likely unaware.

Someone knew Grant intended to “manage” my signature.

And that meant the fraud no longer pointed only toward my husband.

For the first time, Victor Hale was not merely the man holding Grant’s debt.

He was part of the evidence.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Handwritten Note on Victor’s Guarantee Changed the Investigation, and Laurel Learned Someone Else Had Helped Build the Paper Trail Against Her

Two investigators came to Mara’s house at nine forty that evening.
