that matter to you?”

I thought carefully.

“Yes.”

Hope flashed across his face.

I did not want to misuse it.

“It matters because I don’t want you to do this to yourself or anyone else again.”

His hope changed.

He understood.

“That isn’t the same as saying our marriage survives.”

“I know.”

I left.

Mara waited in the parking lot.

She did not ask what happened until we were halfway home.

Then she said, “Did you get what you needed?”

I looked out the window.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“The truth about the grocery argument.”

She waited.

“He never believed I was a burden.”

Mara glanced toward me.

“He wanted me to believe he did.”

I explained.

By the time I finished, her hands were tight around the steering wheel.

“That is cruel.”

“Yes.”

“Does knowing make it better?”

I considered the question.

“No.”

Then I realized something.

“But it makes it clearer.”

That evening Rebecca called.

Victor’s attorney had offered investigators additional records in exchange for formal discussions about cooperation.

Adrian’s attorney was doing the same.

The alliance around Grant’s debt was beginning to fracture.

Each man wanted to prove the other knew more.

Each had documents.

Emails.

Records.

Messages.

And for the first time, the secrets were no longer moving toward me one painful confession at a time.

They were moving toward people whose job was to collect them.

I closed my laptop.

Tomorrow I had three cakes to bake.

For once, I intended to spend the evening doing nothing at all.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I almost let it go.

Instead I answered.

“What happened?”

Her voice was unusually quiet.

“We finally received the complete refinance file.”

“And?”

“There is a transfer in the closing ledger that no one explained before.”

“How much?”

“Six thousand dollars.”

My heartbeat changed.

Six thousand.

The exact amount I had contributed to the kitchen renovation.

“Where did it go?”

Rebecca paused.

“Back to Grant.”

I stood.

“Why?”

“It was categorized as reimbursement for prior property improvements.”

I stared at the wall.

“My improvements.”

“Yes.”

“Using my money.”

“That appears to be what we need to examine.”

Grant had not only used the house I helped improve.

At refinancing, he had apparently reimbursed himself for the money I put into it.

And one final piece of my contribution had been converted into his.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Six-Thousand-Dollar Reimbursement Led Back to Laurel’s Renovation
