everything that day.

That decision bothered me immediately.

Secrets had poisoned every branch of this story.

Yet there is a difference between hiding truth and choosing the moment when a recovering transplant patient receives devastating information.

At least I told myself there was.

Rebecca returned to the hospital with the notebook copies.

I went home.

For the first time in days, I entered Caleb’s room without searching for evidence.

I sat on the edge of his bed.

The pillow still carried the faintest trace of his shampoo.

Or maybe I imagined it.

I had spent so much time investigating his final months that I had almost turned him into a case file.

He had been more than the disease.

More than the donor.

More than the young man who challenged Elaine.

He had hated mushrooms.

He cheated at Monopoly and denied it even when caught.

He once drove forty minutes because I mentioned casually that I missed a particular bakery’s cinnamon rolls.

He cried when our dog died at thirteen and claimed allergies when Daniel noticed.

He was a person.

That mattered because everyone involved in Elaine and Mercer’s work had eventually been reduced to data.

Daniel became a lineage.

Lily became a conception.

Caleb became generation two.

Even Elaine, in her own mind, seemed to have converted consequences into observations.

I would not do that to my son.

The following morning, Rebecca called.

“Lily knows something happened.”

“Of course she does.”

“She wants to see us.”

“Today?”

“She insists.”

I drove to the hospital.

Lily was sitting in a chair rather than the bed.

Progress.

She looked exhausted but determined.

Rebecca stood by the window.

There was tension between them.

“What did she tell you?” I asked.

Lily answered.

“Not enough.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She sighed.

“I told her Caleb took an experimental treatment connected to Elaine’s research.”

“And?”

“And that the treatment may have worsened his condition.”

Lily’s face tightened.

“Because of me.”

“No.”

The word came from both Rebecca and me simultaneously.

Lily stared at us.

“He took it because he was trying to help with research connected to my heart.”

“That was one reason,” I said.

“The same day I was moved to urgent transplant status.”

“Yes.”

“So because of me.”

“No.”

My voice sharpened.

She flinched.

I softened it.

“Caleb left instructions specifically because he knew you would think that.”

Her eyes filled.

“What instructions?”

I took his note from my purse.

I had made a copy.

I handed it to her.

She read slowly.

When she reached the sentence—Lily doesn’t owe me her life—her mouth trembled.

Then she lowered the page.

“I do.”

“No.”

“I have his heart.”

“That does not make your life a debt.”

“How can you say that?”

“Because he understand what it feels like from the other side.”

She looked at me.

“I wake up and hear it,” she whispered.

“The heart?”

She nodded.

“Sometimes at night, everything is quiet and I can feel it.”

My chest tightened.

“I think, that was inside him.”

I had tried not to imagine exactly that.

Now I let myself.

Caleb running.

Caleb laughing.

Caleb sitting at the kitchen table filling out donor paperwork.

The same heart.

Still moving.

“It feels wrong to be happy,” Lily said.

I reached for her hand.

“Then don’t make happiness your assignment.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You don’t have to prove Caleb’s death was worthwhile by living some perfect life.”

Tears slid down her face.

“He would hate that,” I added.

A tiny laugh escaped her.

“Yes.”

“He would tell you to waste an afternoon watching terrible television.”

“He liked terrible television.”

“He had awful taste.”

“He said your crime shows were worse.”

“He was incorrect.”

The laugh became a sob.

I held her hand until it passed.

Then Lily looked at Rebecca.

“I want everything.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“Lily.”

“No more deciding what I can handle.”

The sentence went through me like a current.

Daniel.

Caleb.

Me.

All of us repeating the same mistake in different forms.

I looked at Rebecca.

“She’s right.”

“I know.”

So we told her.

Michael’s illness.

Andrew.

Daniel’s donor sample.

Elaine’s substitution.

Mercer’s research.

The modifier preparation.

Her heart mutation.

We were careful where evidence remained uncertain.

I refused to tell Lily that Elaine caused her defect because we could not prove that.

I told her exposure occurred.

I told her the mutation appeared in Mercer’s sample.

I told her neither biological parent carried it.

I told her experts would need to determine what that meant.

She listened without interrupting.

When we finished, she sat silently for almost a minute.

Then she asked one question.

“Did my dad know?”

She meant Michael.

Rebecca’s face broke.

“Some of it.”

“Did he know they experimented during the fertility treatment?”

“He learned enough to suspect it.”

“And that’s why he was angry.”

“Partly.”

“Not because I wasn’t biologically his.”

Rebecca began crying.

“He struggled with that too.”

Lily nodded.

“I know.”

Her answer was strangely calm.

“But at the end?”

Rebecca moved closer.

“At the end, he wanted you protected from all of it.”

Lily looked down.

“So everyone decided protecting me meant lying.”

No one answered.

Because yes.

That was exactly what had happened.

She turned to me.

“Caleb hated that.”

“He did.”

“Then did it himself.”

“Yes.”

Her eyebrows
