rang.

She answered, listened, and looked at me.

“It’s North Peak.”

She put the call on speaker.

A records manager explained that they had located archived correspondence connected to my refinance.

One email had come from an address that no longer existed.

The sender identified herself as my assistant.

I had no assistant then.

“What was the name?” I asked.

The records manager read it.

Brooke Hale.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

“What did she request?”

“She instructed us to expedite the lien payoff and send confirmation only to her email.”

“Did anyone verify she worked for me?”

There was an uncomfortable silence.

“No.”

“What else?”

“She attached a letter of authorization.”

“Signed by me?”

“Yes.”

“Forged?”

Evelyn asked.

“We cannot determine that.”

“Send it.”

The document arrived two minutes later.

I opened it.

My signature looked nearly perfect.

Too perfect.

Then I saw the date.

The day Grandma died.

I stared at it.

Brooke had submitted paperwork in my name on the same day our grandmother died.

Not weeks later.

Not after the funeral.

That day.

“What time was the email sent?”

I asked.

The answer appeared in the metadata.

6:42 p.m.

Grandma had died at 5:18.

I remembered the hospital hallway.

Mom crying.

Dad sitting with both hands over his face.

Brooke leaving for nearly an hour because she said she needed air.

At 6:42, while the rest of us were still in the hospital, she had been sending financial instructions under my identity.

Evelyn read the metadata.

“This is important.”

I barely heard her.

Because another memory had surfaced.

When Brooke returned that evening, she had hugged me.

She had whispered, “At least Grandma isn’t worried anymore.”

At the time I thought she meant the pain was over.

Now I heard something else entirely.

Click here to continue reading: PART
