passed.

Four.

At 11:49, a call came through.

Harris put the phone on speaker.

No one spoke.

Then a man’s voice.

Distorted electronically.

“You want Peter?”

Bentley’s face went white.

Harris pointed to him but shook his head.

Not yet.

“I want proof he’s alive,” Harris said.

“You’re not the kid.”

“No.”

“Put him on.”

Harris hesitated.

Bentley held out his hand.

I caught it.

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

He looked at Harris.

“I say one thing.”

Harris nodded.

Bentley leaned toward the phone.

“Mr. Peter?”

Silence.

Then a faint sound.

“Bentley?”

Peter.

Alive.

Bentley shut his eyes.

“Are you hurt?”

A sharp noise interrupted.

Then the distorted voice returned.

“Password.”

Bentley looked at Harris.

Harris nodded once.

Bentley said, “Mom says she’ll tell me after she talks to him.”

“Bring the drive.”

“I don’t have it.”

Silence.

“What?”

“Police took it.”

Harris’s head snapped toward Bentley.

That had not been the plan.

My heart stopped.

The voice changed.

“What did you say?”

Bentley continued before anyone could stop him.

“They already copied it.”

Everyone stared.

“So hurting Peter won’t erase anything.”

The silence on the other end deepened.

Bentley’s hands shook, but his voice did not.

“You lost.”

The line went dead.

Harris grabbed the phone.

“Why did you say that?”

Bentley looked terrified now.

“Because it’s true.”

“You weren’t supposed to tell him!”

“He was going to keep using Peter.”

“We don’t know what he’ll do now!”

Bentley flinched.

I stepped between them.

“He made a decision.”

“A dangerous one.”

“He’s ten.”

“Exactly.”

Harris turned away, furious with himself as much as Bentley.

Then his radio exploded with voices.

Officers had breached the archive building.

One man detained.

One hostage found.

Alive.

Peter.

Bentley’s knees nearly gave out.

I caught him.

“He’s alive,” I whispered.

Harris listened.

Then his face changed.

“What about the suspect?”

Static.

“Name?”

Another pause.

Harris stared at Martinez.

The detained man was not Travis.

Not Voss.

It was one of Voss Development’s security contractors.

And he was carrying Peter’s phone.

“Where’s Travis?” Doug asked.

Harris waited for the next transmission.

The answer came thirty seconds later.

A black pickup had been seen leaving the rear service road only minutes before police arrived.

Bentley looked toward the dark window.

“He ran.”

“Yes,” Harris said.

“With Voss?”

“We don’t know.”

Then another officer spoke through the radio.

Something had been found inside the archive.

Not a weapon.

Not the blue box.

A stack of copied documents.

On top was a photograph of Amber leaving my duplex months earlier.

Beneath it were photographs of Bentley.

Maddie.

Doug.

And me.

This had never been only about Amber.

Someone had been watching all of us long before Bentley ever knocked on my door.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The
