did not look like a woman who had spent twenty-five years wondering what happened to her father.

She looked like a woman who had turned wondering into a profession.

Dark hair pulled into a knot.

Practical coat.

No jewelry except a watch.

She entered Detective Harris’s interview room carrying a laptop bag and asked for coffee before answering anything.

Harris called me because Claire specifically requested Arlene Harper.

That made no sense until she explained.

“Samuel trusted your husband.”

I you?” Harris asked.

“Six months ago.”

“How?”

“Work email first.”

“Why you?”

“He knew who my father was.”

“Did you?”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“I knew Lewis Garner was my father.”

“I mean did you know he was murdered?”

“No.”

“What were you told?”

“That he disappeared after stealing from an employer.”

Voss’s story.

Another gave Harris a level look.

“Because the records included police payments.”

“Fair.”

“He needed somebody who knew accounting and had personal reason not to quit.”

“You.”

“Yes.”

Together, Claire and Samuel reconstructed early shell companies.

They identified Pike’s insurance Pike?”

“Probably.”

Within forty-eight hours, Samuel noticed surveillance.

A car outside his motel.

Unknown calls.

Someone entered his about.”

“Yes.”

“Money and warning.”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“Samuel pretended to accept.”

Everyone leaned forward.

“He took the money?”

“No. He told Pike he would stop.”

“Why?”

“To make Pike relax.”

“Did it work?”

“For two weeks.”

During those two weeks Samuel returned to Indiana.

He checked Ray’s garage.

Moved one copy of the murder audio.

Confirmed Garner’s body location through Raymond.

Tracked Brenner.

Then called Claire.

“He said we had enough.”

“Enough for what?”

“Public release.”

Not merely police.

Claire had built a distribution package.

Reporters.

Federal inspectors.

Insurance him.

“Essentially.”

“Did it trigger?”

“No.”

That mattered.

If Samuel had died, why had Claire’s system not released everything?

Because Samuel disabled it.

Or because someone else did.

“Why didn’t it trigger?” Harris asked.

Claire hesitated.

“Samuel managed to cut one restraint against exposed metal.

When one attacker opened the rear door, Samuel fought.

He escaped into woods.

“How?” Bentley asked.

Claire looked at him.

“Apparently your uncle is stubborn.”

Bentley almost smiled.

Samuel called Claire from a gas station.

Injured.

Bleeding.

Alive.

That was the first confirmation beyond speculation.

Samuel had survived Pike’s first attempt.

“What happened after?” Harris asked.

“He disappeared deliberately.”

“To where?”

“He refused to tell me.”

“Why disable the automatic release?”

“Because he found something new.”

“What?”

Claire reached into her bag.

“An audio file.”

Another one.

Of course.

She handed Harris a drive.

“Samuel sent it four months ago.”

“What’s on it?”

“Pike talking to someone after the attack.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Harris played the copy.

Pike’s voice first.

“You had one job.”

Another man answered.

“He got loose.”

Not Brenner.

Not Voss.

Not Raymond.

Unknown.

Pike said, “Find him.”

The man replied, “He knows about Garner.”

“He always knew about Garner.”

“He knows where the body is.”

Silence.

Then Pike:

“That is not what worries me.”

“What does?”

“Samuel found the settlement file.”

Claire paused the recording herself.

“What settlement file?” Harris asked.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.”

She opened her laptop.

The original insurance fraud had generated many settlements.

Property claims.

Injury claims.

Contract disputes.

But one hidden transaction occurred immediately after Garner’s death.

Large payment.

Not to Garner’s family.

To a trust.

Beneficiary sealed.

Trust created by Raymond.

Funded through Pike-controlled insurance accounts.

Then drained years later.

“Who received it?” Harris asked.

Claire shook her head.

“The trust record was scrubbed.”

“Samuel found it?”

“Apparently.”

“Why would that scare Pike more than Garner’s body?”

Claire leaned back.

“Because a body proves murder.”

“That’s plenty.”

“A settlement file might prove motive.”

Everybody went quiet.

Garner had threatened to expose something.

Maybe not only fraud.

“What motive?” Bentley asked.

Claire looked toward him.

“I don’t know.”

He accepted that more easily from her.

Maybe because she did not pretend otherwise.

The recording resumed.

Unknown man:

“What if Samuel already copied it?”

Pike:

“Then find who he gave it Mom?”

“Sometimes.”

“What did he say?”

“That she deserved to know the truth.”

“Then why didn’t he tell her?”

Claire sighed.

“Because Samuel was better at exposing other people’s bad decisions than his own.”

Bentley accepted that too.

Around midnight, Harris got the call from Missouri.

Police entered the farmhouse.

Signs someone had lived there recently.

Food.

Medication.

Bandages.

A laptop charger.

Blood on bathroom towels.

Not old.

A mattress on the floor.

And on the wall, written in black marker:

IF CLAIRE GOT THE PACKAGE, I’M speaking.

“What?”

I asked.

He turned toward Claire.

The wall said:

PIKE DIDN’T ORDER THE ATTACK ON ME.

Claire went pale.

“What?”

Harris continued.

Underneath, Samuel had added:

BRENNER DID.

That overturned everything again.

The sheriff had not merely helped bury an old crime.

He had tried to silence the witness independently.

And if Samuel was correct, Pike had been blamed for an attack he did not order.

Then Missouri officers found something beneath the mattress.

A map.

One location circled.

Indiana.

Our county.

A handwritten label:

BENTLEY’S HOUSE.

Bentley stared at it.

“That’s our house.”

“Yes.”

“Why would Samuel circle it?”

Nobody knew.

Then Harris noticed another mark.

An arrow pointing not to the duplex.

To the maple tree at the bus stop.

Under it, Samuel had written:

THIS IS WHERE THE BOY TAUGHT ME WHO WAS STILL WATCHING.

Bentley went absolutely still.

“What does that mean?”

Harris looked toward the window.

Toward the tree Bentley had hidden behind for nine mornings.

The surveillance logs had recorded him.

Samuel had apparently seen those logs too.

But something about the bus stop revealed more.

Someone had continued watching after Voss’s monitoring stopped.

Someone Bentley might have seen without realizing.

And Samuel believed that person connected directly to the larger truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Bentley Remembered the Car That Never Belonged at the Bus Stop, and
