you.”

Bentley nodded.

“That was bad.”

“Yes.”

“And lying about Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

“And Noah.”

“Yes.”

“And Samuel.”

She looked toward her brother.

“Yes.”

“And Michael.”

“Yes.”

Bentley sighed.

“That’s a lot.”

“It is.”

He considered.

“I’m still could barely stand.

Samuel was afraid of hurting her ribs.

Maddie tried squeezing between them.

Bentley laughed.

The hug ended with everyone crying and Maddie demanding crackers.

Which was probably the only honest way a family reunion like that could happen.

Later, after Amber settled in my recliner, Samuel sat opposite her.

“You really thought I was dead?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Almost all of it.”

He looked toward the later.”

Samuel looked bitter.

“Efficient.”

Amber folded her hands.

“What did he tell you about me?”

“That you were changed.

“Second?”

Samuel looked at me.

“Ray convinced me contact would put her children at risk.”

Bentley, across the room, heard that.

“Again with protecting.”

Samuel nodded.

“Yeah.”

Amber followed his gaze.

“You saw Bentley before all this.”

“Yes.”

“And didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I thought staying invisible was safer.”

“For whom?”

Samuel did not answer quickly.

“That’s what I’ve been asking myself.”

Amber looked at him for a long time.

Then nodded.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

They had both inherited the same habit.

Withholding information and calling it protection.

At two in the afternoon, a federal agent brought new documents regarding Raymond.

He had requested to speak with Amber.

Again.

She said no.

Then ten minutes later changed her mind.

Samuel looked concerned.

“You don’t owe him anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I’m done wondering what he thinks I’m supposed to believe.”

Bentley listened.

“Are you going to see him?”

“Yes.”

“Can I come?”

“No.”

His face hardened.

Amber held up a hand.

“Not because you don’t deserve answers.”

“Then why?”

“Because I need to hear him without watching what it does to you.”

Bentley considered.

That was different from secrecy.

A boundary.

Not a lie.

He nodded.

“Okay.”

Raymond was transferred from the hospital to a secure federal facility two days later.

Amber met him there.

Samuel went but waited outside.

I stayed with Bentley and Maddie.

Amber returned after dark.

She looked exhausted.

Bentley met her at the door.

“What did he say?”

Amber removed her coat slowly.

“A lot.”

“True?”

“Some.”

“How do you know?”

“I checked what I could before leaving.”

That answer satisfied him.

She sat.

Raymond had admitted placing the music box in Bentley’s room.

Admitted using Travis.

Admitted building Pike’s financial structures.

Admitted helping falsify records after Garner’s death.

Admitted lying about Samuel.

Michael.

Elaine.

Noah.

“Did he say why?” Bentley asked.

“Different reasons.”

“Were they good?”

“No.”

“Did he think they were?”

Amber looked at him.

“Yes.”

That was harder.

Raymond did not see himself as a villain.

He saw himself as a man who made impossible choices better than other people could.

That belief had justified decades of damage.

“Did he say sorry?”

Bentley asked.

Amber paused.

“Yes.”

“For which thing?”

I watched her face change.

“For choosing Samuel.”

Samuel, standing near the window, went still.

Raymond finally admitted the core truth without language about safety.

When Voss demanded one child as leverage, Raymond made a choice.

He brought Samuel because he believed losing one child might save the others.

“I asked him how he chose,” Amber said.

Nobody spoke.

“What did he say?” Samuel asked.

Amber looked at him.

“He said you were the strongest.”

Samuel laughed once.

No humor in it.

“Of course.”

Raymond believed Samuel had the best chance to survive whatever happened.

“He called that love,” Amber said.

Samuel looked away.

Bentley whispered, “That’s not love.”

Amber nodded.

“No.”

“Did you tell eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

That was the only honest answer.

Then she told us the one thing Raymond said that none of us expected.

He knew where Michael was.

Not merely a possible identity in Maine.

Exact marina.

Exact address.

Exact current name.

“He kept contact?” Samuel asked.

“No.”

“Then how?”

“He paid someone to check every year.”

Samuel stared.

“He tracked Michael for
