my signature controlled.”

“That is what the evidence increasingly suggests.”

Mark sat again.

His voice was hollow.

“How much money did they get?”

Samuel answered.

“The developer confirmed an advance of one hundred fifty thousand.”

“The option payment.”

“Yes.”

“And if they can't deliver?”

“They may owe substantially more.”

I looked at the forged signature.

Now I understood the desperation.

December 15 had not been a convenient deadline.

It was the point by which Alicia, Bruce and whoever else stood behind Lakeview Holdings had promised to produce control of my land.

My phone buzzed.

A text.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

Mrs. Hayes, if you care about your son, stop digging.

I read it once.

Then again.

Mark saw my face.

“What?”

I turned the screen toward Samuel.

His expression hardened.

Karen photographed it immediately.

Eleanor's voice came through the phone.

“What happened?”

I looked at my son.

For days, every discovery had made me feel more exposed.

This one did something different.

Someone had finally shown fear.

They wanted me silent.

They believed Mark was the lever that could make me obey.

They still thought they understood me.

I handed the phone to Karen.

“Send that to the police.”

Then I looked at Samuel.

“And tell the developer I will speak to them.”

He frowned.

“About what?”

“My property.”

“Dorothy—”

“No negotiations.”

He waited.

“I want to know exactly what Alicia and Bruce promised using my name.”

Mark stared at me.

“Mom, that could be dangerous.”

I held his gaze.

“So was trusting people who thought I'd never ask questions.”

I folded the forged authorization and slid it back into its evidence sleeve.

“I am done being the last person informed about my own life.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Developer Agreed to Meet Me in Person, but Their Contract Revealed
